About a week or two ago, hackers Bushing and Segher showed pictures (http://www.tehskeen.com/forums/showthread.php?p=24759&posted=1) of a modified savestate affecting Zelda: Twilight Princess on the Wii. It didn't do much in the pictures, but they've been working on it since then, and it's pretty close to being a full homebrew loader! You can download it here:
http://wiibrew.org/index.php?title=Twilight_Hack

Or if you don't have a Wii or can't try it out for some other reason, watch a video of it on YouTube:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=zaRhyEUOk44

I've tried it, and it works great! Once you copy it onto your Wii, go into Zelda and select the "Twilight Hack" profile. When you're in the game, talk to the first guy you see (forgot his name) and it'll go to the loader! It has an annoying buzzing noise, and you have to force-quit your Wii to get out of it, but this is an amazing breakthrough! I can't wait to see what comes out of it!

Wow, that actualy seems pretty cool. Weird the stuff you can create out of boredom, eh? I'd download it, but I'm using a Wii.

Quite a leap in Wii hacking, considering the annoying measures Nintendo has taken to limit the freedom of Wii users (No AR = No SDload, which makes me = :( ).

I'm sure once they get an actual loader working, TP will shoot up in sales like Luminus did for the PSP.

Can someone explain this to me? I don't get what this is.

It's a hacked save game for Zelda: Twilight Princess, and I guess what they did is they inserted a really long name for your horse and when the game loads the name (by talking to the first guy you see) it triggers some sort of buffer overflow thing (not exactly sure what that is) and crashes the game. Once it's crashed, I guess they can insert their own code (the loader), and load homebrew from there!

Hope that was clear enough. :p

Oh, I undertood everything but I didn't understand how they triggered it. But if I'm not wrong, isn't there a limit for the horse's name?

From what I understand, they found the same crash in the GC version of TP and checked to see if the same would happen in the Wii version. Thus, they must have found a way using similar techniques to make the same crash happen (since the game is virutally the same, it was logical).

Brakken made a better summary over at Tehskeen (http://www.tehskeen.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6354).

Here is the official information from wiibrew.org: The Twilight Hack works by employing a lengthly character name for the horse in the game ('Epona') in order to facilitate a stack smash. This gets triggered when talking to the man next to you when you start the savegame as he loads the name to use it in his dialog or upon entering the next zone when the game loads the horse for you to ride.

Aaaaawwwwwww hellz yeah (http://www.tehskeen.com/modules.php?name=News&file=showarticle&threadid=6901).

Finally, watch movies and such on your Wii. And, they aren't choppy like in the Gamecube release. :D

I'm excited to see where this will lead. Has anyone tried this out yet? How do you boot homebrew programs from the Twilight Hack? Is it all text based? Is there a way yet to create custom Wii Channels on the main menu? I'd love to throw some emulators on there (like Project 64) so I don't have to re-buy all of the great N64 games, but I'm sure that's quite a ways off.

Oh yeah, a LOT of great homebrew has been released lately! Sadly, no N64 emulator yet, but they learned how to use the Wii-Remote and someone released a version of SNES9X (http://wiibrew.org/index.php?title=Homebrew_apps/Snes9X_Wii#Unofficial_Version_with_Classic_pad_Sup port_by_lopst) (though in Spanish) that has Wii-Remote AND Classic Controller support!
EDIT: I just found another (http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=106996) new version of it that supports TWO Wii-Remotes and Classic Controllers! This is getting exciting! :D

They're working on custom channels; they actually released a homebrew loader channel (Twilight Hack from the Wii Menu), but it has the Mii Channel animation and has a half-hour time limit. They already had a contest for music and an animation for the channel (check out the winners (http://wiibrew.org/index.php?title=Contests#Contest:_Homebrew_channel _music_.28FINISHED.29)), and the final version of the channel will have no time limit, the animation, and the music. There are also a couple other channels floating around (like a GameBoy emulator channel), but I don't know if you can remove them, and I'm not installing them until there's a way to remove them in case Nintendo releases some kind of a firmware update to stop it. I just want to wait a while.

Since I've posted, there have been a couple new versions of the Twilight Hack. Get the newest one here (http://wiibrew.org/index.php?title=Twilight_Hack). Also, most of the homebrew programs out there are listed here (http://wiibrew.org/index.php?title=Homebrew_apps). I recommend getting either the Front SD ELF loader or the MAG Loader, because they will let you have more than one ELF file on your SD card (as opposed to one with the Twilight Hack). Just rename the loader of your choice to "boot.elf" and boot it with the Twilight Hack, then put all of your other homebrew in an "ELF" directory on the root of your card.

So how does the SNES9X work? Do you have to go through Twilight Princess to use it? How do you access it? Does it work just like the Virtual Console when you're inside of it? Can you save data to the ROM file?

You load it with the Twilight Hack (by going through Twilight Princess), and then inside the emulator, you select which ROM from the SD card to load, then hit play. What do you mean save data to the ROM? I don't believe you can change the ROMs in any way....

I mean, can you save your game or do you have to play it through all in one sitting?

The current releaes do have front SD save support (aka, yes). Just go back to the menu and select save.

Just about all emulator releases supprot front SD and saving either via front sd, memory cards, or SD-Gecko. And the VBA port now has saving. (Mother 3 translation :) )

So I accessed the Twilight Hack and I booted up the newest version of the SNES9X emulator (v2.1). I can get to the main menu, but what do I do from there? Whenever I click any option, my screen freezes on a series of horizontal and vertical bars. Every menu option does that.

Also, where do I save my ROM files? In the root folder of the SD card?

Nevermind. I figured out what I was doing wrong.

It works great for me. I can't save, but that seems to be the only problem.

Is there any way to do this without deleting your current Twilight Princess save data?

Zeek
27th April 2008, 04:04 PM
No, there isn't. Just backup your original save on your computer and copy it back when you feel like playing it again.

Though, just wait; a homebrew channel is in the pipeline.

I forget to check HackMii and Wiibrew for two days, and look what happens.
