While music is one of the favorite pastimes of all cultures, there are so many different kinds, and it can become controversial. So duke it out here! Why do you think what you listen to is the best?
Me personally, I think rap is the best. My favorite rappers are 50 Cent and Ludakris. I also think Nelly is pretty cool. I think rap is the best music because anyone who has enough determination can do it. You don't have to be born with talent, such as you do when it comes to singing. Also they talk about whatever they want, whenever they want, and the beats are cool.

What!?
Quite honestly I can't stand listening to any music other than than from videogames for more than ten minutes. I really like the over-the-top jolly music from Kirby games thus my name.

Speaking of soundtracks, the Sonic adventure 2 battle soundtrack rules. I was lucky enough to find it for only 10$ at Electronics boutique(sp?)

Only Metal:
To be a *good* guitarist/drummer/bassist, you need to practice for years. Unless you're a prodogy, but even then, a small amount of procticing would be required. I know that people defending rap are going to say 'dude some guitar peeps suck dude dude dude'. Well never fear! Notice the adjective 'good' encased in astericks. This means that to be an adequete, acceptable guitarist, you must vigorosly practice the instrument.
No Rap:
I can't stress this enough:
To be a "rapper" you need NO talent. None. Thus, rap is only useful for... nothing. No talent is required. In truth, NOTHING is required more than a rhyming dictionary and being able to talk fast. Sometimes not even that.
No Country:
Although a small amount of talent is required to play guitar for a country "band", every country "artists" are all rednecks.

While appreciate the fact that unlike most of you Wario actually listen to music that exhist. (Game sound tracks don't count as music you nerds!) I don't think he knows that rap actually takes talent. Just as he says rap is usless, we could say that about heavy metal. Although I sort of like heavy metal, people can say it's just a bunch of guys screaming curses at the top of their lungs. For example if I asked him to bust a flow out right now, he couldn't do it. Just like I probably couldn't play a guitar or bass or whatever if he asked me too. All I'm saying is we need to be respectful of eachother's music. Honestly it takes lots of talen to make any kind of music.
On the other hand, I will not count game music as music! This is ridiculous! You guys have to get a life! I know you're thinking I'm a hypacrit, but still you can't just live the rest of your lives in video games. I count movie soundtracks as music, and ultimately most of those would go under "classical" music. So why don't you guys say you like classical instead of saying something about games. This is a music topic! I don't want to end up talking about the theme for Treasure Trove Cove!

Sorry, when I said I like Final Fantasy music I meant the orchestral and piano arrangements you can find (although some of it is pretty good on it's own). I like orchestrated Legend of Zelda music too. *wonders what would happen if Nobuo Uematsu and Koji Kondo worked together to compose a game soundtrack* I did say that I liked piano music and classical music too though...

I'll go for just about any time of music, even country. However, rap isn't one I'm usually big on, and the same goes from most of pop, but that doesn't mean I hate it. However, if for some reason my girlfriend is listening to pop....well, I'll listen too. ;)

I'll disagree. Is not the music from video games still music? Just because it comes from a game does not mean 1)there was a good amount of skill, effort, and thought put into it, and 2)it can often sound good. Now, I'll admit, a lot of it isn't something you could listen to in a car, at a dance, or just about anywhere else outside the game, whereas most others can be. Thats why if I d/l video game songs, its either a remix (most of which are professional quality), or a very good song (such as some of the FF game songs, which can be better than even some movie soundtracks.)

So how can a movie soundtrack be considered music, and video game music can't be? Video game music could be considered "classical" as well... a lot of it is fully orchestrated. You are a hypocrite. Not just because you consider movie and game music to be completely non-related, but because if video game music isn't music, then WTF is it? A can of tuna?

First of all, just so everyone knows. I'm not trying to say everyone should like rap. That's my favorite music, and that's how it is. I want you guys to like what you want. But still, I'm not going to count video game music as real music. Let's put it this way: All you guys care about is video games. (Not all of you just (cough) those of you who are insisting I give an explination.) While video game music is a type of music, it's not really included in this discussion. I mean, if I had meant for this to be a video game discussion the title would have been: Which game has the best music? I mean for this to be real world music. Not Soul Calibur 2's soundtrack, not Final Fantasy, but bands, soloist and rappers, rockers, and orchestras, etc.
I hope everyone can agree with me that this means REAL music. And movie soundtracks are consider music becase THEY HAVE THEIR OWN FREAKIN SECTION IN THE STORE! Yes, alot of video games have composers and stuff. But how do you explain games like Tony Hawk that get their music from REAL music. In fact many games get their music from actual musicians. Not video game composers. So....errrr....take that you nerds!

How do you think game music is made? With a stick of spaghetti? Some of it is made using music software, and the rest is, like I said, is fully orchestrated. That is to say, it's created by orchestras ;)
I'm not talking about video games. I'm talking about the music in games. They're two entirely different things. You say music soundtracks are real music because they have their own section in stores? Excuse me, but I don't see sections that say "Movie Music"..... they say "Soundtracks". Thus, what do you think the BK or DK64 or CBFD soundtracks are when you buy them? In stores... in the soundtrack section. With the movie soundtracks.
You're really contradicting yourself here. Especially since you define the association of a series of notes, chords, percussion instruments, etc. with video games to be music that isn't "real"... when all music is is a series of notes, chords, percussion instruments, etc.
Not to be technical or anything :p

Music, is music . Ok? What is the definition of music? My bass guitar teacher asked me that when I started. My definition, is "Any sort of noise that someone creates."
For an explanation, someone can start banging on a trash can, strum a banjo, and it may sound like music to them, but it may seem like absolute CRAP to everyone else. Music is what we make of it. Rap may be "talentless" to some, and Heavy Metal may be just plain stupid to others, but it all takes talents in it's own sense. I don't see many people who can rap like 50 Cent or Atmosphere, but I don't see many people who can play like Tom Morello or John Pretucci either. (Guitarists for RATM/Audioslave, and Dream Theater, respectively) It's all in our minds, really. But music is an amazingly beautiful thing. I've been involved with music for most of my life. I've played piano, alto saxophone, and bass guitar. It's what you make of it.
Me, I'm in the rock area. I'm not a big fan of punk. I really dislike rap, but after spending three weeks at a debate camp, listening to rap almost all those 3 weeks, I got used to it, and I liked it. Aesop Rock, Atmosphere, amazing rap groups. And I don't even like rap that much! So yes, ANYTHING can me music. My typing could be considered music (but that's a stretch, folks) But yes, when it comes to music, you need to be REALLY open minded.
That concludes my post. Semper Fi!

heavy metal and love music are only appropriate when the mood is right.

I doubt me saying anything will make much of a difference, because everyone has their own opinions. But like I've said you guys are so obsessed with video games you don't get out and do anything else. All you listen to is video game music, all you watch on TV is video game tpye shows and anime. All stuff that's sort of video game related. Go ahead and tell me anime is not related to video games. If you have any idea about how the world is, then you guys surely see that most video game fans are also anime fans. I'm sure if you guys got off your computer every once in awhile and stopped downloading game music, you'd see the world has much more to offer than what you're used to.
I'm not trying to insult anyone, but I'm just saying if you guys got out there more, you'd understand what other kinds of music there are out there. Sure, go ahead, like your video game music and your anime. I doubt any of you guys would enjoy rap like I do, but still, I think quite a few of you would like rock or punk, something in that area. Which isn't too bad, because I've listened to it before. Anyhow, get out there, listen to some music BESIDES game music, come back in like a week and tell me if you still like game music as much as you used to.

How do you know this? Has anyone actually admitted to this here? For one, I hate anime. Also, I haven't played a video game in weeks. I'm constantly not home, and I do listen to other music.
I haven't seen anyone else mention anything about being hermits, sitting in front of their TV playing Super Smash Bros, and dancing merrily to the soundtrack as they're playing. All that was ever mentioned was Warp saying he preferred videogame music... and you jump on the whole lot of us, daring anyone to like videogame music, and those few (not everyone, mind) who do like it, are pale-skin gamers who don't know what grass looks like.
If you don't like videogame music, that's alright. It's just another genre... soundtracks. Not everyone likes the same type of music. But to count videogame music as unreal, and tell those who like it to get a life is the same thing as me telling you "Stop liking Rap... it's not music, there's no actual music... it's just a bunch of yelling and crotch grabbing. Stop listening to it, and get a life!"
There's no difference.
What you don't realize, is videogame music is almost its own genre now. Have you even heard of VG Music (http://www.vgmusic.com)? Thousands of people who love videogame music have sequenced it, remixed it... have done everything to enjoy it more. And I bet every one of those people have lives (Well, maybe not Dr. Fruitcake :p).
Like I said, you're contradicting yourself. There's no difference between videogame music, and any other music. It's all music just the same. You simply cannot put a stereotype on people who do like it. I could just as easily say that everyone who likes Rap are terrorists and cold-blooded murderers. But is that true?

Heh, yeah, I'll agree with that. Although I do download remixes of video game music, its just not the kind you can bring on the road. I mean I can imagine someone pulling up to someone's car, their base booming, with some random song on. Then the other guy turns up his car cd player, and its....Treasure Trove Cove music. Then people would look at you funny. :p Still, give some video game music a chance. Like Gold said, some of the stuff, like VG music and more importantly OCR, are basically sites that remix video game songs into some pretty decent stuff, ranging from techno (theres a lot of that on those sites), dance, orchestrated, jazz, the occasional rap beat, rock, etc.
And oh yeah, I knew you weren't picking on anyone, I was just making a point and stuff.

Heh, I don't sit and listen to it on a stereo or in my car either. I don't think anyone is that nuts about it. All the game music I have is on my hard drive as MP3's... available for my listening pleasure whilst online. I can't speak for anyone else, but that's as far as it goes for me. With the exception of the Doom soundtrack... that is definitely good enough to be played elsewhere ;)

I don't classify you as an idiot or anything. I just have a hard time understanding why listening to videogame music outside of the game is wrong in your eyes. It is still music. If any of the music that you like was suddenly put to a Video Game soundtrack would you automatically stop liking it? I have listened to some other styles of music and didn't really care for it, although I can appreciate it as someone elses hard work. I enjoy listening to music that can stir my emotions, and make me feel like I'm somewhere else. Final Fantasy music tends to do that to me. A lot of piano music and classical music does it too. I just love playing FF tunes on the piano and relaxing. I don't see anything wrong with it. Videogame composers work just as hard on their music as anyone else, and there is nothing wrong with appreciating it. It's not like it consumes my life. In fact, I don't own a single videogame soundtrack.

I have to agree with the country part. I can't understand anything they're saying. The background music drowns out all the words. I had to listen to country music every day at my football conditioning camp this summer. All the coaches liked it for some reason. My friends and I would just sit there the whole time. When one of us made out a word we'd scream with excitement! We heard one country song the whole time where we could understand everything they said.

I don't like a particualer type the best. I just listen to the radio in the car and if i hear a song that I think has a good beat or good words or whatever, then i like it. I don't have many cd's but i do pick up the So Fresh cd's (don't know if other countries have them but it's just all types of songs that are popular) just to hear the different types.
Although I do like a lot of the old songs and have a lot of them on my computer ( I've got 139 mp3's and i'd guess about 65% are old or older). hehe the oldest song i have on my computer is Johnny B. Goode which was released in 1959.

I mean I can imagine someone pulling up to someone's car, their base booming, with some random song on. Then the other guy turns up his car cd player, and its....Treasure Trove Cove music.
I should do that! LOL!
anyways, I feel better listening to the jingles of a video game than chatting about the latest "Nelly" CD.

Why wouldn't anyone eat raw (cold) carrots? They taste horrible when cooked...

No, why would anyone eat carrots period.
They taste horrible either way and I don't care if they help me to 'see in the dark.'

I don't have a major preference for any kind of music, but if I had to choose one, I'd say I would go with Rock.

Wow bringing up an old topic...saw it related to the topic 'what are you listening to...'. I wonder if this Professor X fellow still shows up anymore, but a high five for all those who proceeded to poke huge holes in his majorly flawed logic...
I'm not quite sure why the music categories are termed as they are...I'm kind of insulted that rock is paired with punk...
As for my tastes in music, I listen to a wide variety, though very little of it was made after 1989, for I find nearly all new, popular music nowadays hurtful to my ears. I listen to Classic Rock, Oldies, Jazz, Swing, Blues, R&B (the old, good stuff like Ray Charles and Earth, Wind & Fire), Classical, Soundtracks, Techno, a small amount of Heavy Metal (such as Iron Maiden), et cetera.
In the ways of 'new hit music', I have listened to much of it, due to the radio that plays at my workplace constantly playing such drab, and I can't listen to the stuff for more than a short period of time without either a)tuning it out b)covering my ears c)turning it off or d)gouging my eardrums out.
I once had someone try to persuade me to stop listening to my music because it was 'old and should be left in the past'. Has anyone else met one such as audacious as this?
I apoligize if some wished this topic to remain dead, but I'm in a debating mood. Discuss.

Well, as for me, I voted other, seeing as my favorite genre of music is usually techno, J-rock, or mixed (I.e:Rock, rap, techno, and punk mixed together).

I think music genres, while neccassary, are just difficult. To some people rock and puck is the same thing. What would be metal to one person is pop to another. it's just crazy. And each genre has such a wide variety of subgenres! Go type in metal to wikipedia and look at what there is. Goth metal, dark metal, doom metal, symphonic metal, nu metal, death metal, speed metal, glam metal, power metal. I could go on but I won't take up space.
And also it seems that once you assign yourself a genre you can't deviate from it. People just won't listen to chart music because they only listen to indie, or vice versa. Personally I'll (now) give pretty much anything a go, but the majority of bands I listen to are (often classically trained) female led metal bands. I also listen to Delta Goodrem (chart music!) the dresden dolls (no idea what they are) the killers, depeche mode, the kaiser chiefs, flyleaf, evanescence, lacuna coil, the capricorns and more. Not much links them together. I just have a great big genre that is "music I like" and it works very well for me.

Well, this was a very interesting topic to read through.
First of all, music is one of the greatest things in life, but everyone enjoys different types. You can't really help the kind of music you find appealing, nor can you force yourself to enjoy genres you don't like, no matter how popular they may be. So my opinion is that people should listen to whatever makes them happy. Though there are certain genres I can't stand, I won't stop other people from listening to what they enjoy. I think everyone should be entitled to their favorite kind of music, whether it's rap, rock, techno, classical, game music or ANYTHING else... it's up to them. And no one should tell them otherwise.
Personally, I don't like rap. I know it takes a lot of talent with words, and I surely couldn't do it... but I just don't like it. Too repetitive, not enough tune, and it's just... not very musical to me. Every now and then, I'll hear a rap song where the beat is just so great that I really love it, but most of the time... rap is not for me. Not to mention I dislike the lyrics and subject matter a lot of the time.
I don't like country either, because I find it bland and uninteresting. All country songs sound pretty much the same to me, and they're always about the same kind of things, and most of the subject matter just doesn't really relate to me. However, I do know many country songs, because you hear country ALL THE TIME where I live. It's so popular down here that you can't really avoid it. And not ALL country fans are rednecks, although I must admit that many of them are. And, once again, there are a few country songs that I really like.
Now, myself, I'm mostly a rock person. I like both classic rock and modern rock. Lots of the stuff that's really popular right now, I think is complete crap, but not all of it. For instance, I love groups like Coldplay and The Killers. There's also a lot of great bands out there that are less known and far from mainstream, but WONDERFUL if you seek them out. I also love orchestral and classical music. But about that... I've recently found that I really need human voices in my music... I don't know why, but after a while of listening to music with no words, I just feel the incredible need to hear music with singing.
Oh yeah, and I like game music. (OMG!) No, I wouldn't drive down the road to it (if I could drive, heh), and I can't even listen to it for a very long time, for the reasons above (except for in the game, of course). But some games really have exceptional, wonderful soundtracks that deserve a listen. And OCR has some extremely well-done remixes.

I cling to classical music myself; it helps me get through times of the day when you have those headaches. It is a great way to get your nerves calmed down and I also play the violin. I like other musical genre's too as long as they carry a tune.

I am like addicted to metal. I really dislike Rap, Pop and R&B, mainly because I find them absolute cr&p but there are other reasons aswell . I can stand listening to the radio these days because guess what is played constantly.
I dont mind listening to rock and punk and stuf like that it is usually quite good.
If I'm not listening to music im making it. I play the electric guitar and aparently am quite good. I mainly listen to Metallica and other old metal bands like Slayer and Megadeth. I'm not reallly keen on New Metal though but i will listen to certain bands like System of a Down and Trivium.

Yeah, I really don't stick to genres at all. Godsmack is one of my favorite bands, and they have a newer hard rock sound, as opposed to Pro-Pain, who are also one of my favorite bands, who are a mix of hardcore (not the pansy new-age hardcore) and rap/hip-hop. Black Label Society, who I find to be a mix of southern rock and heavy metal, are (again) one of my favorite bands. I also like bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Danzig, Disturbed, The Misfits, Jimi Hendrix, Pantera, (some) Mudvayne and Tool.
I even don't mind listening to some blues or jazz every now and then. Plus, I've started listening to a bit of Johnny Cash and stuff.
I think I'm fairly tolerant of music, but the music I can't stand is new-age hardcore/emo/screamo/whatever it is called. I hate that kind of music. Most of it just sounds like random ass noise to me. I can seriously make better music by running my fingers down a chalkboard.
Phew, I think I'm through typing now. :p

I love nu metal. Linkin Park is da shiznit.
I also like jazz, punk some rap, and classic rock.

Linkin Park is heaps closer to Industrial/Rock than nu metal. Probably because they aren't nu metal in ANY regards. :x.
I'll listen to virtually everything out of Bluegrass/Jazz (and usually country). Seriously just about anything. My favorite genre, however, is definitely Industrial. Nine Inch Nails/Circle of Dust/Celldweller are fantastic. BT, I believe, is one of the best composers though and he's more techno.

Really, I like classical, and then I like all the types of music that dominates until the end of Nirvana. Yeah, that's just about it.

Well, you might notice if you look through the amount of topics I create, that I tend to shy away from that. I'm not quite sure why I don't make many topics, it is just an unspoken rule with me.

Sorry, I don't tend to keep track of how many topics people make, and I don't really care as long as they aren't crap. I was just saying that I thought this should have been a new thread rather than a revived one simply because it's almost 3 years old and a lot of members could have changed music tastes or just have different opinions. It's not a bad topic, I just think the first 3 pages of outdated material could have been eliminated through the creation of a new thread with the same topic.
Not that I care though, do as you wish.
