View Full Version : Earlybird RWP Mario Kart DS Tournament

I know it is a mouth-full, but it holds meaning. In response to the numerous amount of people on the forums that will be getting Mario Kart DS soon after it comes out, I have decided to host a Double Elimination Style tournament.

I already have the bracket generator on my computer, and have had experience hosting tournaments.

I am not to sure on the rules, for there has not been much relesed on the game (aside from tracks and characters). Here are the rules I have been able to generate with the basic information that I have recieved:

It will be double emimination style. Which means that if you lose the first round, you still have the potential to win the tournament, you will just have to fight your way through what I am calling the "bracket of the less fortunate" (Normally called Losers bracket, but here at RWP, there are no losers. ;) ) Also, during the final match, the person in the "bracket of less fortunate" wins the first match, he or she then must win another race in order to win the tournament, but if the winner's bracket person wins the first race, he or she is the immediate champion.

3rd and 4th places will also be decided.

This tournament will of course have to be spread out over the legnth of a few days. It will most likely be held sometime during the first week of december.

Course will be random. All courses are eligable. As well as all characters will be eligable.

Only regestered RWP member will be eligable. Which means that if you have any friends who are interested, they must post in this topic with their name and ID number.

Nicknames are fine, but in terms of the brackets, your RWP member name will be the one that is displayed.

That is pretty much all I can remember for now. Feel free to ask questions if anything is not clear.

Right now I am basically just trying to get together interest. Post in this tiopic if you wish to participate. And telling your friends is always smilied upon. :)

Wheeeee! I wanna play in this, if I either:

A. Get enough money for a wireless router to get here

B. Find a Starbucks with a hotspot.

So, when do I find out my ID number?

We'll have to work out some way of taking into account the time differences but this is me signing up for the tournament. I already have a Wireless network setup at home and I just found out that both Mario Kart DS and the Wifi starts on Thursday, I have to wait till the weekend but the point is I can play.

If you don't have a wireless router, why not get the USB connector (http://store.nintendo.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&langId=-1&currency=USD&ignoreCrumbs=N&crumb1=&crumb1Ignore=&crumb2=%253CA%2BHREF%253D%2522javascript%253APassO n%2528%2527X%2527%252C%2B%2527ChooseView%2527%252C %2527%2527%252C%2B%2527%2527%2529%253B%2522%253ENi ntendo%2BDS%253C%252FA%253E&crumb2Ignore=&crumb3=%253CA%2BHREF%253D%2522javascript%253APassO n%2528%2527C%2527%252C%2B%2527CategoryDisplay%2527 %252C%252758694%2527%252C%2B%2527N%2527%2529%253B% 2522%253EParts%2B%2526%2BAccessories%253C%252FA%25 3E&crumb3Ignore=&translateFrom=%C8%C9%C7&translateTo=EEC&usrSearchText=&searchText=&selSrchType=&page=&view=&productId=95704&categoryId=58694&lastAction=ProductDisplay&orderTotal=null)? ;)

Okay, Gaming Master2k has raised an interesting point. So what I will now need from everybody who is already involved, and that will be signing up is your Time Zone.

If anybody needs a cheaper or easier alternative to get on the Wi-fi network, refer to the link posted by Gold Jinjo above.

Gracias for the Sticky (I'm assuming that is was Gold Jinjo or GM2k). :)

One more thing; are you also signing up Gold?

Will those USB connectors be available in stores, by the way, or will you have to order them from Nintendo? I suppose it's very likely that they'll be mass distributing them along with Mario Kart DS, but I want to be sure.

Oh, and once I have my copy, I'm in. :)

Yes. Exactly what Minjo said. I know I can't get the USB thingy untill maybe the end of the month or Christmas. I just hope it's soon. Maybe if all particapating competetiors do not have the required devices, the tournament will be postponed.

Woah, I sounded like a lawyer there.

GameandWatch33
15th November 2005, 03:25 AM
I completely understand where most of you are coming from. That is why I will host the tournament in the first or second week of December. So that we can both, hone our skills, and allow more to get the game so we can participate.

Sorry to do this to some of you, but your posts are a little unclear. I need everybody that is not on the following list, and that wants to play in the tournament, to post a conformation post:

Repobanjo (Dependent on availability)
Gaming Master2K (Definate)
Gold Jinjo (Definate)
Banjo-Fella (Definate)
GameandWatch33 (Duh, just because I am the host, doesn't mean I can't have some fun.)

Remeber to get your Time Zones in to me by tournament time. It is essential in the process of scheduling matches.

On a side note, I am sure I would want to keep you guys on my friends list, if that would be alright. So we can warm-up with each other too. As well as after the tournament, and for potential future tournaments. :)

I'm in, but why not make it after Christmas for those that don't get the game untill then?

GameandWatch33
15th November 2005, 04:26 AM
I am going to end up doing more than one tournament. First, we have the "Early Bird". Next, comes one about the first week in January, the "Post-Christmas Grand Prix".

This will also allow the people who participated in the "Early Bird", that got their games later than everybody els,e to practice a bit more. Also, the people who get their games for Christmas will get a full week of practice.

Anothing thing that will potentially grow will be rivalries between the tournament combatants. This will make for an interesting post tournament chat.

I also had a new idea while typing this post. I might be running what I like to call a Gimmick Grudge Match (GGM for short). In these special rules will apply between random combants, and add a new sense of intensity to the game. They will not affect the outcome of the tournament. They might involve a 2 vs. 2 team style match, or even just a regular match with a third racer that will either be instructed to; 1. Hinder both racers with items. or 2. Just go around the track and be someone to draft off of.

I know this is getting overwhelming, but I just had another idea while typing up this post. I would like possibly start what I like to call: the "RWPGPX" (Rare Witch Project Grand Prix). Yes, I did get a partial name idea from IGPX. But hear me out. It will be ran kind of like Nascar with a points ranking system. You are rated on your individual performance, as well as during some of the GGM's. Matches can be requested, as permised by the Event Leader. But a mandatory 1 race per week, with a maximum of 3 (this allows the most efficent way to work around schedule and time zone conflicts). If you weekly race is not done, you will forfit all potential points for that week.

I would love feedback on my ideas from existing and future racers.

I hope you don't mind. It's attatched.

That picture is awesome GM2K. I commend you on your work.

Also, there has been no feedback on the whole RWPGPX. I have been working on a points and ranking system. But I won't bother to post them untill I find the interest.

The tournament is turning out nicely. It seems that we will have a good amount of racers, and the double elimination style will ensure a good tournament.

Greenwich Mean Time here, I'll have you know. As a result of being in the UK, I'll be getting the game on the 25th, or around then. And that also depends on whether or not GAME stock the USB adapters, as well. Oh, and on my free time - but that shouldn't be too much of a problem on weekends. On weekdays, though, it could definitely be.

I won't be getting MK: DS until Christmas either. As for the tournament... You guys probably all know this, but this is how online mode works for MK: DS when you only want to race your friends. You and your friend have to have each other's friend code, and after that, once you have more than one friend, starting a wi-fi game in friend mode randomly selects three of your friends for you to play against. The point? Tournaments will be very hard to set up because there's the possibility that you may end up with a friend other than who you're supposed to race against in the tournmament, because you can't choose which friends to race against. It's not my tournament, but I have some suggestions to get around it. These are just suggestions, not rules. You can get around this only by making sure that the friend codes of only those you need to race in the tournament are stored in your DS; that means you may have to delete other friend codes; you should write them down or store them in a text document for future use. Obviously specific times for the matches should be posted on the boards so people know when to connect.
