I remembered an incident that's good as a counterpoint to everyone here who's been saying that God has literally changed the course of their day, such as having them find a date or getting them to study. Here's a true story of something that happened to me: I was happily playing on my Wii when my Christian neighbor came over and tried to get me to go to her Bible study group for the thousandth billionth time. Just to get her to stop getting on my case about it, I went. After about three hours of misinformation, evil fairy tales, and hatred for those who are different, I went back home, only to discover that my Wii Internet service wasn't working. And didn't for months.

Thus, I can only conclude that God does not want me to believe in him.

Your move.

Did you ever fix it? The Wii, if it's internet adapter is in use for too long, tends to fry itself.

Mandolin
17th May 2009, 08:06 PM
...really!? And which one is the Internet adapter? Is it the big white box thingy?

I'm using wireless, but I don't know if that's any difference.

It's just been working sporadically since.

It's just been working sporadically since.Wi-Fi is internal. Too much useage of it though will burn it up. My brother's Wi-Fi doesn't function anymore. He had WiiConnect24 on, left his Wii on the shop channel while he went for a drive. Came back, wireless was dead.

WiiConnect24 overheats the Wii like crazy.

Never happened to me. Only thing that's ever happened to me was that time the disc drive broke and that time I broke the AV output.

What reason other than religion would warrant such childish behavior?

George Carlin is made of win.

But it was Douglas Adams' radical atheism that made me come out of the atheist closet.

Holocaust - Wasn't caused by religion, would have happened either way, it wasn't just Jews killed.

Antisemitism - Antisemitism is just another form of racism. Religion didn't cause it did it?

KKK - Again, not religious, just racist.

I'm not trying to say that religion doesn't cause bad things to happen, it does, but so do things such as politics, politics probably does it more, just please use better examples.

Antisemitism, assuming I was taught correctly, originated because people were pissed at the Jews for supposedly killing Jesus. After that, it kinda snowballed. So if you go all the way back, and completely take religion out of the mix, there'd be no antisemitism, so Hitler never would've grown up being taught about it, and in all probability, there would've been no Holocaust.

(but I'm sure someone will say Hitler would've found some other group, as if what he did was based, not on his beliefs, but on some arbitrary need to commit mass genocide, which is bollocks)

The funny thing I never got, Hitler thought blonde, blue-eyed, tall people (Aryans) were superior... yet he was dark hair, brown-eyed, and short. XP

I never knew it originated from the killing of Jesus...hmm.

But if what you say is properly true, then why did he kill other minority groups too which he had no reason to?

Jinjonator
20th May 2009, 11:48 PM
Well, him killing homosexuals is fairly obvious (I'm pretty sure he was Christian). Gypsies however...I'm not sure.

Why would Christians be mad at Jews for killing Jesus? It was part of God's plan... Without Jesus dying there'd be no bridge to eternal life, etc.

What started off as a religious motive quickly deteriorated into a hatred of minorities in general.

Hitler's hatred for Jews didn't come from relgion..

He was annoyed with all Jews because when World War 1 started, he noted that many Jews avoided military service and 'profiteered' off of the war. He blamed Jews for Germanys loss in World War 1, developed all these radical policies and the treaty of Versailles pretty much forced the German public to put faith behind his radical views.

Huh. I was taught that it came from hearing Karl Lueger complain about the Jews, and talking about all this antisemitic stuff that, I would assume, wouldn't exist were it not for the things I mentioned above.

When people say, "He looks Jewish." they mean his Hebrew decent. That's how they're a race. People have just replaced "Hebrew" with "Jew".

It's a fair assumption that all hebrews are jewish, which automatically makes both terms one and the same. It was the Jewish religion (or those who were fanaticised by it at the time of the crucifiction) that killed Jesus, thus making the word "Jew" more convenient to villainise them then "Hebrew".

If Hitler said "We need to solve the Hebrew problem..", the German people (with a basic general knowledge at least) would not have known what the hell he was talking about.

Actually, you can't be 'properly' Jewish unless your mother is from Jewish/Hebrew descent.

That doesn't necassarily mean you can't take it up; Judaism is just like any other religion. It doesn't ponder to blood lines (as far as I'm aware). If someone who took up Judaism believed in it properly (with their fashion sense for example), I doubt the Nazis or any Anti semetic would double check their ethnicity by a blood sample.

Oh I forgot about this; there were some loose ends I wanted to attempt to tie up but my exams got the better of me.

Well, when someone is asking for proof that god exists, it is safe to assume they believe that god doesn't exist.

I wanted to come back to this because it doesn't sit right at all; I recently watched a video (http://www.dailymotion.com/user/totocacapouet/video/x8uei4_openmindedness_tech) that explains this quite well:

"Saying "I don't believe in X" is not the same as "I believe X doesn't exist"

The former is passive and brought about by no strong case being made in X's favour whereas the latter is aggressive, assertive and should ideally have some substance to back it up.

Besides, I've seen some pretty good theories stating how it could have always existed (http://www.thekeyboard.org.uk/Where%20universe%20from.htm).

Ahhhh I see, when I say "universe" I tend to mean the results of the initial expansion. Interesting read nevertheless, I've thought about there being multiple Big Bangs before too . Boggles my mind thinking about it though. I don't susbcribe to it however because the whole "it's always expanding & contracting" part is still conjecture.
