November 11, 2005 - Today, at last, Microsoft opened up about which Xbox titles you'll actually be able to play on Xbox 360. Along with a compatibility Q&A on the official site, Microsoft released an initial list of Xbox games confirmed to be compatible -- more than 200 already. Have a good look: Half-Life 2, Halo 2, check and check. Jade Empire? No problem. Super Bubble Pop fans, do not despair. Best of all, you can keep those tummies tight: Yourself!Fitness is so ready for X360.

Of course, backwards compatibility requires a software emulator -- one good reason to grab the premium X360 package which includes a hard drive and the emulation tools.

Microsoft will be continuously updating the compatibility list with new titles, so be sure to check the real deal frequently.

For a full list check it out here: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardcompatibilitygameslist.htm

You need the premium package but I'm willing to buy it. After all then I can play Halo, Halo 2 and Grabbed by the Ghoulies on my 360 (when I do get one)

What do you think of the list?

I think that Microsoft needs to re-add Grabbed by the Ghoulies - it was on the list when it first came out, but they took it off yesterday. I'm surprised that the Splinter Cell trilogy won't be among the first batch of b-c games.

But as long as it plays Halo 2 and I can play against people on Live who use the original Xbox...;)

"Alot" isn't a word. At least, not in the context you're using it in. Even then, it'd be "Allot", which means to portion something out. For example, that list is the allotted number of games Microsoft is allowing for backwards compatibility*. I apologize for being so anal, but, to me, reading "a lot" smashed together into an nonexistant word is like hearing fingernails on a chalkboard. So you could imagine how overwhelmed I was just now, especially considering I read eight "alot"s. ;)

*Anyway, it's nice to see they've compiled some kind of decent list... but I still object to the use of the term "backwards compatible" with this. It's not backwards compatible in any way, shape or form. The Game Boy Advance is backwards compatible. The Revolution will be backwards compatible. The Xbox 360... has "select backwards emulation". If it were truly backwards compatible, you'd be able to play any Xbox game on it.

I'm happy VexX made the cut. The game seemed too obscure for them to care, but fortunately it is there.

I get the same way when I see "All Right" smashed into Alright.

Any 2D fighters
Soul Calibur 2
Burnout 3

Panzer Dragoon Orta

Well, now I helped my soul, and fixed it. I just don't want to upset a mod.

So far they have a nice long list, but since there's no Grabbed by the Ghoulies, what's a Rare fan to do? It seemed like a worthy title, especially more than some the obscure titles like Barbie. I hope that list gets much longer sometime in the future, or else the Xbox 360 isn't really completely backwards compatible.

I'm still having trouble seeing the logic of craving backwards compatibility so much, that someone would be willing to spend the extra money for the hard drive. I mean, if you've got the game for XBox already, why not just keep playing it on there? It'd save a lot of money for you.

When the 360 is out, I suspect the XBox and all of its games will go down in price anyway, so if you dont have any of them, it'd be easier to get them for the system they were intended for.

Then again, I only bought an XBox last March, to play Halo and Halo 2, and not much else. Nothing on the 360 interests me except Perfect Dark, but that's not enough to justify the six hundred dollars or so it'll cost for the system up here in Canada. After taxes and ********, that is.

I've just always seen emulation as something for dead systems of years past. Although I have my NES, Super Nintendo, N64, Gamecube, and XBox all hooked up to one TV, I still have an emulator on my computer for Super Nintendo, to play all the games I missed out on. Anything backwards compatible on the 360 is probably available for very cheap in the stores these days, so that's where I'd be putting my money.

Hmm, don't mind me.

EDIT: Hmm, why is the word "what - not" removed? This confuses me a little.

That's because Ice Mario believes that particular word is the "scum of the dictionary"... and ever since he said that last year, I've agreed with him and haven't used the word myself ever since :)

Sorry to be off-topic, but I use that word occasionally! What's wrong with it, might I ask?

Hey, has anyone noticed that Conker was taken off as well?

Gah! I don't really want to have to hook up so many systems to my TV because of a lack of satisfactory backwards compatibility. It's already a tangle of wires, and I'm running out of places to plug them all in!

I'm seriously considering skipping out on the Xbox 360, at least for a few years.

I'm with you on that.

At this moment, I don't see any point in getting one. It's overpriced, and there are no games that appeal to me. Not even Perfect Dark Zero or Kameo have had much effect on my interest, and it's definitely not worth an entire system for two games made by a company that, in my mind, have lost their magic. And knowing Rare, those will be the only two games they put out for the 360.

Then there's Halo. It's a good series... for the Xbox. Every console should at least have its "omg u gotta get it1" game, and Halo definitely does it. But there have been games (http://hlownsh.ytmnd.com/) since playing Halo I've felt have been much more worth my money, and are actually worth playing over and over again.

Meh. I'm rambling again. Nevertheless, I won't be getting an Xbox 360 until I get my Revolution... and even then, there will have to be something more than Rare's games to warrant the purchase.

And as much as I hate to go off topic, I must counter this.

Unlike "alot," the term "alright" is in fact in most dictionaries. :p

I don't think it was ever on the list in the first place, which doesn't surprise me: it seems most of the 2005 releases didn't make the list.

On the subject of stuff related to backwards compatibility, finding an Xbox 360 hard drive is RIDICULOUSLY DIFFICULT. Curse those people who bought two and three, only to sell the extras on Ebay for $350!

Double post. Oops.

The backwards-compatibility list has been updated, adding support for several of Tom Clancy's games:

-Splinter Cell
-Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow
-Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
-Ghost Recon 2
-Ghost Recon 2 Summit Strike
-Rainbow Six 3 Black Arrow
