What is the meaning behind rap?
Whenever I hear it, it sparks a burning ember of hate for anyone who .. Not to be rude to anyone, but it makes me hate people who live up to the stereotype of the N word. Ignorant people, or so to say.
What is rap about? I'm asking because I honestly don't know.

The meaning behind rap is whatever the artist wants it to be.
Rap is a vocal style for goodness sake.

stereotype of
there you go. you're stereotyping the genre itself. well done.
it's not like people can explain what an entire genre is about.
here is a rap, for example, that you probably don't have in mind: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTXsAOpSf9k

Rap is the lowest form of musical language in it's base form however when fused with other genres can be decent however this is rare. It's also been reported to induce feelings of anger, hate and big headedness, side-effects include nausiousness and vomiting.
Also it was invented by Hitler.

That was actually enjoyable. I guess I just don't like rap about shooting hoes and banging the police.

Haha, what? Honestly, it's people like you who are setting us back. Rap/hip-hop can be quite amazing, but I bet you've heard like 3 or 4 songs on the radio and you are judging the whole genre by that.
Let me guess, you live in the Hamptons, or Aspen.

Yep, Aspen, my homeland and pride.

Rap is simply a specific style of musical expression, rhythm and poetry
It is not rap itself that I detest, but rather what modern day rappers seem to enjoy rapping about.......drugs and violence.

Not all raps bad, a couple artists can be pretty good actually, Eminem mainly and a couple other songs do have good beats to them. But raps essentially poetry put to a rhythm, just half the time that poetry now means butts, women and money.
Never realised the rhythm and poetry thing before, the more you know! :p

I wouldn't use eminem as an example imo; I just don't think the music he uses matches the beat of his lyrics at all, ends up sounding really clunky and bad to me.

I used to enjoy rap but I have since moved on to more Rock/Alternative music. The genre itself is not completely horrid, there are just untalented artists that flood the mainstream with there pompous egos and gangsta mentality.
Believe it or not, there are some very good writers with talent that actually know how to make a song, they are just being slept on due to the mainstream artists' popularity. For those of you that don't already know, these underestimated rappers make up another branch of the genre which is often referred to as "Underground Rap".
