What is the main difference between them? Really, I don't know anything about ipods.. Can you only put music on them with itunes? Does the music on them have to be DRM protected to play? What about zunes? And generic mp3 players?

The only really worthy competitor is a Zune, but I still prefer the Ipods interface.

If you are talking about a pure music player, there are plenty of high quality alternatives that you won't pay $600 for just because it has an Apple logo on it. The appeal of the most recent iPods (Touch for example) has been all of the other features in my opinion.

iPods are mostly just the brand, but they tend to have waaaay better aesthetics, and play better. MP3 Players are more simple, straightforward, and tend to be much cheaper. The iPod Shuffle, however, is made for just music, and have no screen, as well as they cost much less. Most people buy iPods (I'm saving up for a Touch currently) because of all the stuff they can do besides music (games, apps, etc.).

Well, what would I want to get if I wanted to play music and watch video?

Well, what would I want to get if I wanted to play music and watch video?
I would get a Zune, as they can be found for <$70 on craigslist or ebay or someplace and they can do video and music as well as pictures and radio.
An ipod classic does music and video as well, I just use Zune because all of my music is in wma format (from back when I just had a generic mp3 player).
iPods can play mp3's, they don't have to be DRM. They can play DRM m4a files (I think that's what they are), however iTunes has recently made most if nto all of their songs DRM free for $1.29 instead of the 99 cents.
Zune can play mp3's and wma's and some other files I think. They take wmv movies too, which is great if you're a windows movie maker stud. For iPods you have to use iTunes to load it, and Zunes you have to use Zune software to load it.
Almost all Zunes have the ability for xna custom games to be made for them. In fact, if you know enough coding you can make your own. I think it's written in the same language as the xbox games.

So I can't get a zune or ipod and just copy music and video onto it like it were an external drive or something, I have to use the software?

Pretty much. Or any other software that supports it.

All I want is $100 iTunes money, and my own Classic iPod, preferably 8gig.(You know, the rectangular ones with the big screen?)

I only have a ipod because it has a colour screen and i'm too lazy to not just use itunes synchronise to add music to it.
Saying that however, i don't like apple at all and i find they try to cheap us out of so much especially with the new ipods (when i bought my ipod, it didn't even come with a charger, i had to spend $50 to buy a 3rd party one)

I used to have a Sylvania. Hated it.
iPod and Zune is overrated. We need a better player that isn't expensive simply because it's from a big brand; that isn't dependant on stupid stores; that is built to last ( you know that the iPod battery is specificaly designed to be replaced in a year?); that has pinpin' sound and vid quality.
I'm asking too much.

If you've got something like an RCA Lyra, I have one. It is completely underrated, extendable memory via SD cards. And it takes one single AAA battery. It's lasted for 12 hours on a single battery. I love it, audio just sounds so clear through it.

I've had my Nano since my birthday 13 months ago, and I use it almost every day.
That said, if you simply want to play video and music and nothing else, I'd say a simple iPod Nano would do the trick. It's convenient, small, has excellent sound and video quality, has nice aesthetics, and has 15 gigs of space, which is pretty good for a Nano.
The iPod Touch is great for music, video, games, and Internet, but although it's much more expensive, the iPhone has almost all the features of a cell phone, an iPod Nano, and an iTouch combined.

...Why the hell would you need to know that for something that you're mostly using to listen to music? It's not a computer for god's sake.

I recommend either a Sony or Samsung player, they both play videos, music etc. without the iPod Pricetag. Both brands also have a touchscreen player.
Or if it is music and music only you want, the Sansa Clip is really really good.
iPods for good sound quality require a big investment in headphones, so unless you have a lot of money then I'd suggest getting the Sony since they come with very good headphones anyway. Or Creative, but they aren't built quite as well as the Sony.
But Apple own the market in accessories, applications, and an online market for songs, so maybe the iPod is for you, but I never download music. I always buy it via CD or vinyl.

Because it can do things other then play music and video? I want to know what it can do.
That is like you asking a car dealer if the car has AC or power windows. you buy the bloody car to drive, not to keep you cool or to put windows up or down. God.
I'm sorry for trying to make an educated choice on what to buy because unlike you, I don't have fifty megajillion bucks to spend on an ipod

You need your ears checking, sound quality on the Nano is really bad compared to that on expensive MP3 players at around the same price.
The Nano has never come in 15GB size, they have only ever came in multiples 2/4/8/16. You must have the 16GB version. The screen is far too small to enjoy good videos.
I say this once and I say it again. SAMSUNG YP-P3. Fantastic sound and video quality, excellent battery life, and is much, much better than any iPod on the market as an MP3 player. Comes in 4/8/16/32GB. I have the 32GB version.

Okay...
1) DEEEEEEEEEEEEBEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE'S BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK
2) I'm not picky with quality, and I don't really see how it's THAT much worse than others. I can hear the sounds fine. In fact, I can't imagine the quality being much better, but that's just me.
3) No, it's 15.05 gigs. I might be mistaken and it may not be a Nano. But it's still great.
That said, I've never used another music-playing device outside of a computer or a radio, so I'm probably uneducated on the magical quality that are these other, apparently better deal music players.

1. :3
2. If you're not picky, why did you say the quality was excellent? Sure, it is audible, but compare it to a Samsung, Sony, or Sansa. Samsung preferably.
3. The internal capacity will be 16GB, but only 15GB of it will be usable.

It's not the quality of the player itself, it's all in the headphones.
And no, Whyme. The iPod Touch can't even record video. Only the iPhone 3GS can do that.

Untrue. The soundcard in every player is different. Where headphones make the most difference, iPods' soundcard is not as loud or clear as that of Samsung, Sony, or Sansa.
Though a good set of phones is very necessary, the player does a lot more than you think. Especially when most MP3 players nowadays of expense have audio enhancers of sorts.
I recommend a pair of Sennheiser headphones, personally. Or Shure if you can afford them.

2) Because someone who isn't picky would think the quality would be excellent. Just like someone who isn't a picky eater would think several foods are excellent. I've never been able to compare an iPod without other brands, but I don't see how it would get much better. Since I haven't heard a song on those things, I'm probably wrong, like I said.
3) Oh. :P Is the 1GB for the menu or options or something?

1. That is only because you don't know any better, and you should know better :P. Pick up a Samsung player and you'll see what I mean. With a pair of GOOD 'phones.
2. 1GB for internal firmware, so yes.
