View Full Version : I Bought a Game Boy Light

For those of you who don't know what the Game Boy Light is, it was pretty much a Game Boy Pocket with an indigo back-light. The system came out right around when the Game Boy Color was released.

Due to sales of the Color increasing, the Game Boy Light didn't get much feedback, therefore was discontinued shortly after, leaving only around 12,000 units being made, and was only released in Japan.

While the Game Boy Pocket took two AAA batteries, the Game Boy Light took two AA batteries to prolong the life of play for the back light when being used, and had a protruding battery cover.

Here's a few pictures of my purchased product:

The item is being shipped out today from Japan, and will make an outstanding addition to my other rarities such as the Panasonic Q, and Nintendo 64DD.

Can't wait.

Awsome. Well it's good to know that people wouldn't be fooled as easily back then.

The backlights on those are pretty cool, but they can hurt your eyes after playing for awhile.

Looking pretty.

Heard those suckers gobble batteries like a superscope, though so may need to invest in some rechargeables!

Yeah. I mainly got it for collectors purposes. I'll probably play a game or two before bed, but won't play it hardcore.

It'll be pretty much displayed along these guys:

Really now? I thought maybe since they are using AA's, that it'll help out. Hmm.

I've got rechargeables, cause I play 360 alot, so my controllers need them. Haha.

Haha, thanks, thanks. I get that alot, but I appreciate the comments. :)

Had the Q for about four years now. The crazy thing is, since I see it everyday, I don't think it's rare anymore. I almost feel like its a system everyone has.

The Q sounds more impressive than the Wii.

Wow good going. The Q is the holy grail for Gamecube collectors. I was going to bite the bullet and buy one a few months back but it was something disgraceful like £400 :/

Congrats though!

Alot of people sheer away from the price tags of rare items such as the Q, or DD, but you have to put more thought beyond the price tag. Ask yourself a few questions:

-Is it worth it to YOU?
-Are these a dime a dozen?
-Resell value?
-Collectors item?
-etc.

It's been since November 2005 when I won the Q in an eBay auction. I remember running duel computers cause I was scared one was gonna lock up. The time ended, I was the winner, and forked out $385 bucks for the Q. I paid $422 bucks for the N64DD back in July of 08, which I also won in an auction.

Crazy thing is, I rarely play them! It's more of the fact that its expensive eye candy than anything. But I accept that, because I know that one day, I'll be able to resell them for more than what they are going for now, but for now, it's an item that I adore in my collection, and is one of my most prized possessions.

Did these items burn a hole in my pocket? Why yes they did, but as the days turned into months, months turned into years, and I was able to make more money, I look back, and I'm glad I made the dive into buying these things, before they increase in value even more.

I think I'm going to steal all three of those items. Especially the DD.
I apologize in advance.

What exactly is that Q thing? Is it the GC that plays DVDs?

The Panasonic Q, a hybrid machine that combines a Nintendo Gamecube and a Panasonic DVD player into one. It was a package that competed with the Playstation 2 and XBox in form, but its retail price holds it back from being the most valuable player. The unit was released in Japan in December 2001, but was never released in North America due to it's pricey price tag. People thought they could just buy a Gamecube, and a separate DVD player for cheaper than the total price of the Q.

Production of the Q ended quietly in December 2003.

Interesting. And congrats on the purchase. I would have loved something like the Game Boy Light 10 years ago.

Was there ever any word on adding a DVD player to the Wii during development? I'd love to watch The Super Mario Brothers Super Show then hop on New Super Maio Bros. Wii.

The Wii IS capable of playing DVD's... You just have to get homebrew channel and install DVDX. Nintendo lacks awesomeness for the disclusion of ability to use it. :<

Is that a modded Q, perchance? Lik-Sang used to make a killing on those, GameChoiceClub occasionally reels some in as well.

I'm still haphazardly trying to get a 64DD (I have F-Zero X Expansion Kit already), I saw one at PAX but it was $500 and..well..yeah, no way lol.

Edit: So what's next, a Sattelaview :D?

The Q has a MOD switch to switch the console between US, and Japanese regions.

Congrats on the owning the F-Zero Expansion. Nice. I'd like to get my hands on a copy one day.

Sattleaview would be nice, but I'd have to get a Super Famicom first. :)

Oh my god, that is awesome! I've always wanted...well pretty much all of that collection, I'm incredibly envious.

Oh on the Wii playing DVD front, I believe there's a Nintendo channel in Japan called Wii No Ma that's an on demand video service. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii_no_Ma

That's one of the things I've managed to hold on to from my childhood. I still have my original GB but none of the handhelds afterword.

Also, the Q I don't so much care about, as it's incredibly worthless these days for that price, considering it's major feature is a DVD player, but I have always wanted to pick up a DD.

I remeber when ni was little and I first found the expansion port on the bottom of the N64. I was so excited because it was cartridge shaped and I though "wow maybe the N64 plays SNES games!" I was stupid back then, so you can imagine my disappointment whe I googled the N64 and found out about the hugely expensive DD on a wiki.

I want a Q.

I once bought a GB color from the DI. The screen was cracked, but it worked like a charm.... then someone stole it 2 years back.

Yeah. It's pretty nice. Too bad the games cost almost as much as the system.

Maybe one day, just one day, I'll get a game or two for it. Hahaha.
