It does more than just play music.
It "scrobbles" your iTunes listening habits, and compiles various lists, so then you can compare them with other users.

It also provides suggestions, based on other users' listening habits, which can be cool at times, although I never take their suggestions, since it's just based on what you have in common with other users, so say you have some of the bigger names in a genre in your library, like Burzum, Cannibal Corpse and Carcass, some goon with a bunch of nu metal has listened to the aforementioned bands because of some crazy reason, then you'll most likely get a bunch of suggestions to check out Limp Bizkit or something, even though you realize how atrocious they are.
