I'm starting to see commercials for this and can't wait to play it. I'm craving a new Zelda adventure and this will be awesome. The game is out in EU, has anyone got it yet? I'm really curious to hear about it.

Not hopeless, I got your back. ;)

On topic: At first I wasn't going to pick up Spirit Tracks because I'm not really a fan of Toon Link, but now a'days it seems he's getting more of a push then the original Link, so I finally gave in and rented Phantom Hourglass. I like the feel of Toon Link on the DS for some reason*, and I am almost thorouly prepared for Spirit Tracks.

I am a bit uneasy about the whole train concept, though. Train tracks have never even been in a Zelda game to my knowledge, where the hell is this train coming from? Oh well, I get to play as Zelda instead of rescue her.

*IMO, handhelds should have Toon Link, and regular Link should stay on the consoles.

Zelda games have contained cannons, electromagnetic cranes, steam-powered boats, jukeboxes, neon lights, aliens, clocks, the spinner, windmills, lighthouses, salvage arms, scuba gear, spotlights, and fireworks. I don't think a train strays too far.

If they ever do introduce guns to the series, I hope that they are seen as an incredibly taboo and dishonorable weapon used by the bad guys.

I dunno, it just seems fitting. o-O

I'd like to see a Zelda villain that isn't some magical master or anything, but just has a lot of technology. Link has his Master Sword, the villain has a light saber. Epic duel.

Also Zelda finally has a bigger role than damisel in distress! Well...technically she still is but Zelda being the Navi for this evening = AWESOME!

No way...my brother and I follow the same rule, and I have every version you said you chose except I got Ruby. Heart Gold should be sick!

And whoever was talking about only getting Heart Gold and then not buying anything else...there is SOOO much more coming. For one example, Mario and Luigi 3: Bowser's Inside Story...the sequel to Partner's in Time, which was a GREAT game.

I lied, I did get Ruby, then he bought Sapphire, then he lost it, so I bought a Sapphire, then he wanted another Ruby or something. S**t happened and now I have 2 Ruby copies, 2 Sapphire copies and 2 Emerald copies.

Also, that was me. Yeah I know Mario and Luigi RPG 3 came out (about 2 months ago?), but the only good game in that series is SuperStarSaga, Partners in Time is actually one of the reasons I sold most of my DS games. After I played that game, I sold it, along with many of my other DS games. I've been reserving my DS for HeartGold for the past year or so, and I'm still undecided whether I should keep the DS just to play HeartGold, or sell the thing on Craig'sList after 4 or 5 playthroughs.

If you want to convince me to keep it, you are going to have to try harder. :p

Partners In Time was nothing compared to the awesomeness to Super Star Saga.

Partners in Time is just horrible. The combat is completely broken, and extremely tedious (e.g. you have 50hp compared to the enemy's 400hp and can only deal attacks of 2 and 3 each time, while they can dish out attacks of 20). Plus the level design is linear, and boring. It's a terrible sequel. Apparently BIS fixes all of this.

Woops! Sorry bout that DonkeyBanjo I'll change that if I get unlazy somehow.

Anywho, I started playing the game recently and I'm not sure what to think of it so far. The first and probably most important thing I have to say is,

I DON'T LIKE THE MUSIC THAT MUCH AND FIND SOME TRACKS QUITE ANNOYING

It may just be me, but I never expected something like this from a Zelda game so I just thought I'd stress that insanely lol. Anyway, it seems pretty damm easy so far. I started the game and got past the first temple within an hour 1/2. There are some cool puzzles though, that are unique to the series so far. They are pretty easy, but hopefully later on in the game there will be unique AND hard puzzles.

Though I am stuck right now, so that's a good sign.

Anybody else play the game yet? I'm curious to hear what others are thinking.

Dylan Yoshi
16th December 2009, 03:55 AM
I've beaten the game and it's great. The ending is epic and awesome. Phantom Hourglass's ending felt like a cop-out, but this is anything but that.

The game does get pretty challenging later on.

Still has touch screen controls, the only change is that they made rolling easier. As long as you hold the stylus correctly, you shouldn't have much trouble.

I still can't get over that they put a train in the game. A freakin' train! I was skeptical about the boat, but it turned out great, but this? I don't know man, I don't know.

The train fits in fine. Twilight Princess even had a rocket launcher in it, a train isn't that far off. The reasoning for using trains is part of the plot which I won't spoil, although it's at the beginning anyways.

Edit: Byrne should be in the next Smash Bros game. He is awesome.

I found the game to be excellent but at the same time to be a disappointment as well. Not sure why it's getting as so much praise as being much better than Phantom Hourglass.

I'll admit that the game was certainly more difficult and that the bosses and dungeons were certainly better, but I think the fact that it was once again a new Link dampened the experience for me altogether. Or not necessarily because of the new Link, but rather the lack of going into detail about TWW and PH Link and Zelda. Was expecting there to be much more harkbacks to their quest than what was given.

I got the game today. Byrne's a ****ing bad ass! The cut scenes seem pretty epic for a DS game! Also, why are people so upset that this is a new Link? Some of the characters are from PH and WW, and there are a few hints of a backtstory about what Tetra did once her kingdom moved into the land. Plus, I like the new Link and Zelda. Link isn't a noble hero who WANTS to go out of his way to save Zelda, he's just a lowly engineer who would rather sleep, but is kinda forced to go on this quest. Zelda isn't a pure-hearted, kind, and fragile princess, she is a little drama queen who is more concerned about A dark entity using her body than what chaos it will do.

Lol at Zelda, she's all calm at first and when she loses her body she's like "What are they gonna do with my body?" Haha, then she turns into a drama queen. This gives her more personality, but the transition from calm to bitchy isn't smooth. Oh well.

I'm at the beginning of the Forest Temple. wtf another forest temple....

ChRiSpY
24th December 2009, 11:35 PM
Just got it the other day, and I'm @ the snow temple. It's been a little hard for me to get into it though. At first I was really skeptical about the idea of having the train in the game. So then when I started playing the game, I tried to give it a bit of a chance, in hopes that I'd be sucked in....But I still find it to be downright tedious and boring. In every game in the series, you always had this big open world to explore, with lots to see and do. Even in Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass, you could still at least sail around checking out islands and villages and stuff. But in this game, you have very little freedom. Since you're on a track, you obviously can't go wherever you want. The only real freedom the player has is the choice of whether they want to go backwards, or forwards. Oh and you can blow the train's whistle too, (Oooh fun!). All in all the game just feels way too linear for my liking. I still plan to finish the game, but I don't think I'm gonna be in much of a hurry.
And I'm not making this post to piss off the zelda fanboys either. I love all the other games in the series, but this one just keeps disappointing me :(

As you play through the game, more and more tracks are unlocked to the point in which exploration exists.

I'll never understand how linearity is a negative or positive aspect of any type of game ever. It's how the developer chooses to use the scope their game that intrigues me, not how straightforward or wide the scope is. Apart from the first one, Zelda games have always been linear. Venturing throughout Hyrule field or sailing across The Great Sea, you were still on tracks, so to speak. The only non-linear parts in Zelda games arise after you've gotten all the items necessary to complete sidequests. Only then can you truly explore the game's world picking up treasures in any order you please. Wind Waker is a perfect example of a game world transforming from linear to non-linear (although it didn't have a huge impact on gameplay). Once you get all the items, you can go about The Great Sea completing every sidequest. The main game up until that point takes around fifteen hours. Getting everything before Ganon's Castle takes a good ten hours, so it leaves you free to go GTA-style tackling the islands you want to when you want to.

I'm quite enjoying it. The only thing that truly bugs me is how they gave Byrne/Staven two different names between the American and European versions. WHY?!!

Weren't the dungeons and some other places also different?

Yeah that's true. Outset Village instead of Aboda Village. Marine Temple instead of Ocean Temple. Desert Temple instead Sand Temple. Things like that.

I think it's pretty minor in comparison though.

Whatever I said before, scratch that!

This game is AMAZING!! It really REALLY picks up after the Snow Temple. There is so much sidequest stuff it's unbelievable and it really feels like they tried hard with this game. The feeling of effort is definitely what I enjoy the most.

The game actually felt rushed for me. It only had 5 temples and then the Spirit Tower. But my oppinion that it was better than PH still stands.

I just got into Ocean Realm and am at the first place.

The on tracks thing is no different, it feels the same as the ocean but except you have a more direct path. I actually don't get bored by the train rides.

I haven't played PH in a while, but I played it a lot. I got so close to completing and had about 1 heart container left. But my question is wasn't much bigger on scale? There was islands now stations or whatever. There seems to be less stations and they seem to be smaller. Aren't there less temples and they are so short!! The Spirit Temple also seem shorter. Side quests, I don't know actually, there could be a good amount.

Maybe I need to play PH sometime (not now but waaaay later) and then Spirit Tracks to compare.

But does anyone else feel they dumbed the game down....even more then PH was from console ones (it is a DS one, but I meant more so difficulty than content). It's still a fun game though! I'm loving it!

Yeah but once you get to the Ocean Realm, the side quests and inbetween parts are so lenghty and fun. The lokomo puzzles were a nice touch. } not really a spoiler but just in case..

I also think that some of the music is VERY good, despite my earlier statement.

I thought the last part of the Spirit Tower was pretty damn tricky.

I am ABSOLUTELY loving this game, it surpasses phantom hourglass on every level and (unlike most zelda games) the dungeons are more of a joy, than a chore.

Normally in a Zelda game there isn't any surprises after a while of playing them. But I wasn't expecting that, and how they presented it. Anyone far in the game should know what I mean.

I'm not quite sure what you mean there. Unless you're talking about the cut scene during the final boss, where Byrne dies.

Wow wtf if you quote it shows the ****ing spoiler. Not your fault at all, I didn't know that.

I meant

Linebeck III

About that spoiler, oh well it was expected right? He is the Antagonist or sidekick whatever

The spoiler is fine, like I said it was predictable as any Zelda ending. The only difference is how

Spoiler ending

Byrne is the first sidekick I recall? Zant was played out differently.

Atleast it wasn't like Bioshock. That is the worst spoiler I ever got, and it was my fault..Haha

But yes about that

Spoiler before reading get to Ocean Realm

Linebeck I grew attached to, one of my favorites and to see him come back was great!

That made me lol so much when i saw it, the final song at the very end i can't play no matter what i try it is driving me insane! But some things you will notice look behind link's roomate in his house and the window of the castle seconds into the coronation screen.

They were so funny it makes me realise we should really do a Zelda timeline, to figure out when each game took place.

We already tried that. The discussion starts on this page and is scattered through the thread.

Having just beat the game, it's finally safe to come into this thread.
I must say,
The train fights at the end was epic, and so was the final boss fight.

And some of these dungeons are ridiculous. I literally would spend hours on one certain thing. Also, the addition of an instrument was one of the best decisions ever.

I feel like the game was darker than phantom hourglass.

Anyone else feel like this is sort of like Majoras Mask to PH's Ocarina of time? I dunno, but it kind of struck me like that.

Some of the music (like Cole's theme) sounds like some of the music from Majora's Mask. Not to mention the newer techology (MM has clocks, motorboats and power plants). Plus the whole idea of Hyrule being divided into four lands, with a big tower in the middle...

No I know what you mean. The game isn't afraid to shock the player. Like Majora's Mask, it's more lenient with darker themes than it's predecessor. Obviously, nowhere near as much as Majora's Mask, but noticeably more so than Phantom Hourglass.
