View Full Version : R.W.P. Comic Brainstorming Thread

John
15th February 2006, 04:18 PM
Ok, this is the brainstorming thread for the R.W.P. comic that I might be continuing if I find that the pages aren't too difficult or time consuming to draw. This idea was sparked again by the cool new smilies of our robot overlords. ^___^
:mazza :grey :gold :gm2k :icy

I don't think I'll call it M.O.D.S (Masters of Destroying Spam) any longer, especially since they are not all Mods anymore. ;) I'm toying with the idea of calling it R.W.P. (Rare Witch Police). If this goes on for any length of time, I will probably extend it to cover the entire RWPforums. The main problem would be what some members look like in comic form. Some user names make it easy, while others... not so much.

I've been drawing a few sketches, but I don't want to show them all right now since they are just preliminary scribbles. I'll show some bits and pieces to give a general idea...

One obstacle I have right now is figuring out how I should represent the forums. A single building with multiple rooms? A group of buildings? A giant star ship? A stone Mario head lair? Should it have large outdoors areas?

I've made some extremely quick preliminary scribbles with all of the characters on them, but I'm not going to show them all since they mostly suck. If anyone wants to chime in with ideas about the characters, feel free:

Ice Mario: The drawings I made of him didn't turn out too well, so I've got a bit of revising to do.

Grey Jinjo: The sketchings I made of him look pretty much like your average Jinjo. His weapon will be Ban Hammer. I'm trying to think of something to make him look a bit more unique. I have two sketches that look completely different. See here:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/John032586/grey.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/John032586/Grey2.jpg

Gold Jinjo: I've altered the design a bit since the original comic. I took inpsiration from his avatar and gave him a suit and a gun. He's a spy now. XD All of the recent drawings I made of him look really evil though... I'll have to fix that. >__> See here:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/John032586/gold.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/John032586/Gold2.jpg

Gaming Master 2k: I'm not going to change the design much from the original comic. I might alter his robes a little bit though, and maybe I'll try to do something better with the scepter as well. The preliminary sketches of him aren't so developed for now, so I'm only going to show the head. See here:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/John032586/Gm2k.jpg

Icy Guy: He is similar to before, only a bit more Shy Guyish.

Those are the ideas I have for now. Nothing is set in stone yet. If anyone else has ideas, then go ahead and suggest them. It's going to be difficult coming up with storylines and such. :-/ Don't get your hopes up about this though, because I may yet find that my drawing abilities aren't developed enough to be able to draw decent comics. That is exactly what happened to the first one so long ago. I may be drastically overestimating my artistic capabilities.

Cool. I can not wait for this mod comic. So, if it is popular, you are spreading it to everyone? Like, Heffy and Minjo?

You have really excellent sketching skills! I'd love to see a comic! All of your ideas sound great. I like the name R.W.P. for one, better. M.O.D.S. can sound like it can come from any forum, but R.W.P. has a distinct uniqueness.

Mandy

They look great :) Are you going to get them vectorized and colour them in? That would be really cool

John
16th February 2006, 01:54 AM
Thanks for the positive comments all three of you! :) I'm glad to see that people think it's a good idea.

Yes, if it does take off, and I find that I can keep up with new ideas, I will likely begin including other members. At that time, I will probably just ask for the character descriptions of anyone that wouldn't mind being in it.

I don't know about vectorizing the drawings since I've never done that before, and I wouldn't know where to begin, but I will probably ink them in with a ball-point pen similar to what I did for my "Ganon's Second Plan" drawing. I might look into vectorization later on, since the smooth look might fit well with the comic.

I am thinking about coloring the pages when I am finished. If I do color them, I will most likely use a basic cell-shading method that I've recently picked up. An example of a picture I've colored in that style can be seen here:

http://www.deviantart.com/view/28908703/

The R.W.P. comic will have slightly more detail than that little Zelda panel. That example doesn't really have much of a background or anything, and the art style is completely different. The shading wouldn't get much more complex than that, however, since it would take forever for me to color with a mouse.

The first thing I will probably do after I get the style of the characters down, is create a cover page of sorts with all of the listed characters on it. Then, I will create a single pilot page to get feedback on it. After that, if all goes well, I will continue forth. It will probably be a slow process, but I imagine it will get easier as I go along.

This is somewhat of a learning experience for me, as I am very much an amateur at this. XD I have no idea when I'll have the first part done.

Wah... I know I'm double posting, but oh well. :p Worst case scenario I'll be IP banned for crimes against humanity. XD I thought it would be confusing just to edit the previous post.

I've got the character designs pretty much where I want them, and I've drawn a preliminary sketch of the title page. I don't really want to draw it all again since I've already drawn like 10 different pictures, so I'm probably just going to tighten up the finer details of the sketch a little and then ink and color this one, even though it's not perfect. If anyone has any problems with this, then now is the time to speak. :p

However smoothly and quickly the whole inking and colouring process goes will let me know whether this is going to have much of a future since I'm running out of time. I've got too many things going at once.

The Cover Sketch is here:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/John032586/RWPCoverSketch.jpg

Ice Mario has the Ice Key as a weapon, as well as the ability to shoot ice balls out of his hand. :mazza I've decided that it would probably be best if GM2k's scepter could morph into any controller he needed at the time, so I've left it pretty much the way it is. I didn't really alter his outfit either. :gm2k Grey is the jinjo with the smily face Ban Hammer. :grey Gold Jinjo is pretty much the same, except I tried to make him look less evil. :gold Icy Guy is the one in the middle flying all Matrix like. :icy I have to make the logo less crooked, and possibly completely different. :p Hopefully I'll have the colored version by tomorrow.

Some parts of it could be better, but I don't think it's completely terrible. Both positive and negative feedback are welcome. I'm sorry this is taking so long. ^_^

Great stuff, wish I could draw properly. I have quite poor pen control, you should see my handwriting! I think my nephew has neater writing. I'm probably better with a mouse then a pen.

I usually use Photoshop or Illustrator for vectors, but when it comes to things like comics, I must admit I have a bit of a thing for flash (which might sound a bit weird) Flash handles vectors in a totally different way and is really easy when you have a lot of black outlines.

Don't want to steal your thunder or anything, but if you need a hand with coloring, I'd be happy to help. :D

Thanks for the positive remarks all of you, and thanks to GM2k for letting my double post slide. :) I'm sorry to say that I didn't get around to inking and coloring it yesterday, since I fell asleep after I got home from my humanities class. :( I've been off schedule ever since that fever I had at the beginning of the week. I don't know if I'll be able to do it in the next couple of days either, because I've got some Algebra work to do. I'll try to get it in, though. ^___^ I apologize for the delay.

I have, however, cleaned up the pencil sketch a bit to prepare it for inking. I've scanned it in as a backup plan, in case I completely botch up the inking and ruin the sketch. XD I'll post the link so I can have at least something to show, even if it is basically the same thing.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/John032586/RWPcoverPencilCleaned.jpg :)

If I ended up having to color the cleaned up the pencil version, I would just clean it up further digitally, blur it slightly, and color it like that.

I'll leave it to you guys to make sure I don't have to double post when I'm finished. Hehehe. :p

Don't want to steal your thunder or anything, but if you need a hand with coloring, I'd be happy to help. :D

Thanks for the offer! :D If I ever find that I need assistance, I'll be glad for the help. ^___^ Also, if I ever post something that you want to color, go on ahead. :approve: I could try to post higher resolution versions too, if you want, but I think photobucket might have a size limit for pictures.

Oh, if Photobucket is too restrictive, you might want to try Imageshack. I've heard they're rather more lenient about image size.

repobanjo
17th February 2006, 10:38 AM
Imageshcak is the way to go. If [the picture] is too big, they will resize it for you automatically. The restriction is no worry, though. You'll never need that function.

John
17th February 2006, 12:35 PM
Thanks, I will look into Image Shack. :)

I've got it inked! It barely looks different from before, though. If I finish coloring it before someone else posts, I will just delete this post.

Hehe... I hear the Bond theme in my head over and over every time I draw Gold. XD

Anyway, moving on. I have to work on the setting and things like that, before I can move on to actual pages. The more I plan, the easier this will be in the long run. I've drawn a quick sketch of the Rare Witch Lair, headquarters of the R.W.P.D.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/John032586/lair.jpg

My scanner barely picked up the faint sketch, so I had to majorly adjust the levels for it to become visible.

I've still got to work on what the other places might look like. :)

Those are very good, John! I really suck at drawing.....but with my friend training me, I have the power of GIMP to make stuff. GIMP is a paint program that can do 99% of what photoshop can....and more. It might take me a few months, but I could make awesome backgrounds in the future. My tutor's so good, he wants to try to make skins for InvisionFree. He goes by the name of Puaun. (DB, Malons should've told you about him. I'm sure he did.)

Anyway, ingenious. I love it. Keep posting the non-colored ones so I can try to color them! (If you don't mind, of course.)

EDIT: I have to say....you could be in a comic making/cartoon sketching career! ;) :approve: ^_^

EDIT 2: Hey....do you mind if I use that Grey Jinjo ban hammer picture on RIDDLE?

EDIT 3: Yes, I'm editing a lot. I hope you don't mind, John, but I made an alternate coverpage. Enjoy! (http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e365/Omega0712/DragonsRWPcolored.jpg) (Yes, GM2K looks like Santa Claus)

I'm trying to get it working again. It's so frustrating.

Add to that that we recently got a letter from Road Runner claiming that virus type e-mails were being sent from our IP adress, and that they might shut off our internet. TT__TT If you don't hear from me in a while, you know why.

I'm sorry to hear that. It was probably a hacker with an IP hider or something. Though, I've never heard of a Road Runner ISP...

John
27th February 2006, 01:52 AM
Hehe, well, I've sent an e-mail to Road Runner telling them I followed all of their instructions, so hopefully this time they won't shut off my internet connection. They've done this to me before, where they actually did shut it off, and they wouldn't turn it back on until I had reformatted my hard drive to make sure that the "e-mail virus sender program thingy" was gone. >__< I refuse to reformat my hard drive and lose everything on it again.

Anyways, I've got my scanner working again after much frustration, so as soon as I make a decent page, I'll scan it in. ^____^

I've drawn a few different pages, but I've destroyed them all since they were screwed up. XD Like any forumite without any ideas, I resorted to quoting Zero Wing. I need to think up a first page to draw that doesn't begin with:

"In A.D. 2006, war was beginning."

and end with:

"All your spam are belong to us!"

I think the problem is that I need to think up a decent conflict. To do that I probably need to think up a good villain to start out with. I'm kind of stuck on that one though. In the old comic I used a generic goblin looking thing with a spam gun, but I want to do something better than that here.

Anyways, I've been scribbling out villainy looking things trying to find something that might work in the comic... Here's one of the pages just to give an idea of what I'm doing so that I have at least something to show... You can see that they are all really messy and crappy and stuff:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/John032586/baddiesketches.jpg

If end up with a good one, I will change it's style to make it fit the comic, and think up a backstory and a conflict to start out the story.

Mandy

Looks great. I like the guy in the middle (top) reminds me of Monkian. :D Maybe when you've got your baddies finished you could get people to make suggestions, like:
Special Powers
Weekness
Weapon
Background

And maybe the same for your goodies too ;) this might help you to come up with a story.

It sounds cool but there's one flaw:

Crime bosses require the situation to run on organized crime. Lament and organized just don't go along too well.

Edit: As a villian, I'd imagine him as a schizophrenic type of character with a serious nervous tick. He would never actually accomplish anything and every grand scheme he tries to create results in either a)it blowing up in his face or b)nobody takes notice of it. Think Wile E Coyote style, only a lot more spastic.

Good point. What if he's nervous and schizophrenic, but he leaves a lot of things unfinished, like how he never finishes his sentences? Sort of how in a lot of movies, criminal masterminds leave one undone flaw, except lament leaves things unthought of?

Lament actually played the part of CATS in the Zero Wing page I drew. XD I like the idea of him being a goof up Wile E. Coyote type of villain.

I drew a really quick sketch of him to try to get down what he should look like... I really need to start sketching cleaner and more thoughtfully instead of scribbling all over the place, as I've ruined like 5 pages because of it.

I imagine him somewhat as the unwanted illegitimate son of Grunty... XD Don't mind the Grunty sketch. :

I put the guns back up. ^___^ I dunno. I was too lazy to draw them before. I've also tightened up a few of the lines and added a couple of things. Believe it or not, that chair in the last panel is what is giving me the most trouble. XD I may yet toss this page out like the others.

Quick question:

Is a full body lair be better or worse?

I perfer just the head.

Perhaps if the rest of the body were in some sort of pose, it would be different. Have one of the hands crushing lament and other spammers! :p

I prefer the head, because it looks more like Grunty's lair.

Oh, there are somethings you forgot in your updated scan.

-The members entrance sign on the gate.
-The login intercom
-Registration sign
-Grunty's Reject list

So were they gotten rid of permenantly? I liked those.

Okay, I'll keep it just as just a head. ^__^

It's partially inked and none of the pencil has been erased, so it looks really yucky right now, but...

Which looks better?

White Borders:

Or Black Borders:

Black borders seem to always run a bit better. I've always felt that white borders work better for sketching and the like, whereas black borders seem to be more professional.

Then again, white would work if you're aiming for the full out comic style. Either way really.

Gold Jinjo
6th March 2006, 03:39 AM
I think the black borders do a better job seperating each panel... but that's based on as it is. Perhaps when it's colored, white borders would look okay. I guess what I'm saying is I'm not sure ;)

John
6th March 2006, 06:13 AM
I think you're both right... The black looks better for now.

Anyways... Here is the fully inked and ready to color version. Not perfect, but not bad. I made lots of little mistakes in the inking process.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/John032586/page1inked.jpg

The colored one will be up next, and then I can start page 2!

Hey, I hadn't noticed the spammer list before. Liking.

Banjo's Banjo
6th March 2006, 05:50 PM
Oh, so the little "member's enterance login" thing was a keypad. I thought it was a small mail slot in the wall we just had to squeeze through. Shows what inking can really do to change a picture. o-O

Awesome job, btw. Things are really shaping up.

See, this is wrong again. Members entrance is just a sign, not a keypad. Login is an intercom where you have to speak in to enter. Registration is a sign where you go to sign up.

WRONG WRONG WRONG! Wow, I really threw a temper tantrum there, didn't I?

The Grunty's Reject list could be cleared up better. I don't understand the RWP Entrance, is that the door in front of IceMario? The door shown in front of mario is not as detailed like the one to the left.

John
9th March 2006, 03:26 AM
Thank you for the comments. :) It was meant to be a keypad, but it does look really like an intercom. XD I don't know. It can be whatever.

The door in the first panel is meant to be the entrance of the actual forums themselves, of which the Mario lair is a small part. Think of it more as an introduction or title panel. I think you're right that I should have made that clearer, and I was actually thinking that myself. I had originally planned to do a few intro pages that would have set up the forums as a whole, but I still haven't thought of what a lot of the other places will look like, and it would have looked too empty since I don't have the other members designed as characters yet.

The Grunty's rejects list was meant to be a minor background detail to set the location better. I wanted it to be noticeable without stealing the scene. Not all of the scribbles are actual names either. XD I don't have a pen that makes small enough lines to do small handwriting clearly. I am replacing some of the writing with computer text, so I will decide what to do when I get to that... It might look worse that way though.

An unfinished example of a panel with replacement text:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/John032586/door.jpg

It is not finished. I am still tweaking it trying to make the flat colors look right, and I haven't even begun to think of shading or anything like that. Hopefully I'll have everything looking better than that in the finished version.

Also, I have not added story text boxes yet. Hopefully things become clearer once I add those throughout the page.

Hmm... with all these settings being drawn out and refined, I was thinking some maps would be an excellent compliment to the comic. A topographical layout of where all these locations are within the Rare Witch Project Universe. Y'know?

*grabs a piece of paper and a pencil*

Perhaps I'll see what I can do about that ;)

set up the forums as a whole, but I still haven't thought of what a lot of the other places will look like.

Can I be of existance?

Banjo fourm: The door is Grunty's head. The place is like a confernce room with SNS eggs instead of vases, and Banjo locations on the panels in the back.

Other Rare games: The door is a giant Rareware sign. It is like the same as Banjo on the insdie, but you replace the Banjo related things with other Rare games.

Nintendo Forums: Inside a giant SNES. Go through the cartridge slot to get in. It's all like a field with assorted Nintendo memorabila.

Microsoft: The "X" side of an Xbox. Just open it up to get in. The inside is the lounge room for Microsoft or something. Bill Gate's vault?

Misc. Games: A PS2 and a Dreamcast mash-up. Inside is random assorted consoles or famous FLASH games as decorations.

Anything Goes: A big "AG" is the door. The inside is just total random isanity. Vortexes, flying monkeys, whatever.

Latest News: A newspaper is the door. Inside is a room that looks like a journalism room with a bunch of flying newspaper.

Hacking: A Giant GS insigna. Inside is a bunch of wires and numbers.

Creative Cavern: A cave with a question mark in it. A giant statue of R Hunter in the middle, and inside is a bunch of creative pictures and stuff.

Suggestions and Feedback: Just like you drew it.

The Lobby: A shack with a sign that says, "The Lobby" You see regular anonymous people without faces come in, and come out with faces. Possibly lament comes here to regenerate.

I do not expect these to be on the actual comic, but it was worth a shot.

s.w.a.t
9th March 2006, 09:07 PM
That's good, but I thought I might change 1 or 2.
Hacking: A room filled with a giant super computer. Small offices go off to the side of the "hallways" created by this computer. A few people are looking at read outs at random intervals.
Creative Cavern- A giant cavern thats mostly blackness with a few lighted spots with story-telling circles. latrens of people moving about bob in the darkness.

This is actually pretty cool. I actually have a few questions and suggestions:

First, are the other, less important members of the fourms going to have minor appearances, like in the backround or run away on fire after an explosion?

Next, when do you plan have the first issue finished? (just curious)

My suggestions are:
~ Use computer text and writing in variation (computer text on computers, printouts, some grafitti; writing on reports and signs)
~ Have some rooms to represent fourms (like the guys before me posted).

Also, for the creative cavern, I feel like there should be some tables, along with a large meeting table in the middle, with various Rare-related pictures, both drawn and computer images.

So, what are you going to do for members that you have no idea about what they look like just from their name? Are you going to ask them, not include them or make something up?

Good job with everything you've done so far. I wish I could draw like that. My drawing skills are about average but I try and I like it.

10th March 2006, 07:43 PM
It's simple. You draw them as you picture their abstract persona. (Subconsciencly we all do this.) Some are simple to appeal to all, like me, Goatmancer, or P.o.t.O. Some like you, Ice Lightning, are a bit harder. I sorta picture your abstract persona as your avatar.

Abstract persona isn't the exact word, just how my psycoligist Uncle explained it to me.

Thanks for the input guys! I was going to wait to reply until I finished the page, but I decided to anyways. XD

I look forward to seeing the map, Gold. :)

I had some similar ideas for locations and such, but the ideas everyone gave could help make them more interesting. It will give me some stuff to think about. ^^ I'll tell you guys a little bit of what I had come up with, too:

Creative Cavern: A cavern (of course) with various subcaverns for games, drawing, stories and such. The main difference is that I saw it with lots of virtual reality machines throughout for RPGing. :)

Hacking: Lots of computers and videgoame consoles... Game shark tanks for 'persuading' secrets out of reluctant cartridges... you know, the usual.

I was thinking of putting all of the Gaming forums near each other and labelling the space in between them as a 'War Zone'.

The Lobby: I imagined it as somewhat of a high security building right behind the registration gate, surrounded by a fence of some sort. It would be filled with various 'experimentation' devices, spam detectors, etc. The front section would be a comfortable hotel-like lobby for the existing members to come and welcome the new ones after they have been 'processed'. ^^

Banjo Forum: I had seen it as a giant SnS egg or something. The inside would have holographic chambers that could become any area in the Banjo games. It would probably have some rooms that are not holographic for discussions.

Rare Games: similar to what Repo typed.

Latest News: I was thinking of maybe a large electronic bulletin board in the center of the forums.

Anything Goes: I actually thought of this as a rather normal lounge type of area with couches, TVs, stereos, and places to flop down and hold all sorts of conversations... Perhaps a punch bar within it somewhere. ;) I kind of like the idea of chaos and randomness though.

I thought that the areas could perhaps go beyond the actual list of forums, as well. Maybe at the far corner of the land, would be the ruins of past forums or something. ^^ There could be things like lakes, rivers, forests, lava, bottomless pits, secret passages, etc that could be spread throughout the area, as well.

You guys have some good ideas, and nothing is set in stone. I'll go with whatever ends up working best in drawn form. ^^

As far as putting members in it, I was thinking that when I get to that point, I would just ask for anyone who wouldn't mind being in it to provide a description of their appearance.

I wasn't really thinking in terms of 'issues' for this. I was just going to continue it as long as I could. Seeing how long the first page is taking me, it will probably be a while before a decent number of pages is out.

John! This is ingenious, why didn't I comment sooner?

First, reading the last 80 or so posts, I have to say, excellent ideas from every single one of you.

Second, instead of having Lament as a villain : You're making seperate lair areas for all of the forums, why not have a designated area called "Grunty's Rejects?" Have the Rejects rotting in a jail cell, with Grey coming along every so often taunting them and such?

This is going to be one hell of a comic, John :)

....People i'm flattered but seriously, it's ALL the players in an RP that makes it worthwhile. ^_^ If anything you'd see me walking around there every so often, checking on things. All the ideas for the RWP sound great, it'll be really nice to see everything in lifelike detail. But take your time John, we all know how life can be at times...

Hehe. I must have deleted my post yesterday just as you were posting. ^^;

I have the coloring done! I kind of rushed through finishing it since I'm pressed for time lately, so it doesn't look quite as good as it should. ^^; I especially don't like how the last panel with all the screens turned out. Still no text boxes, because I thought they looked kind of bad. I'm going to work on adding that stuff later, and I might just decide that this first page doesn't really need them since they didn't really have that much information that added anything to the comic.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v71/John032586/Page1colored.jpg

Hopefully the colors don't look to weird, because I color with my laptop, and I've heard that it can make the colors look screwed up on regular PC's due to the different types of monitors.

Anyways, I am working on page 2 whenever I find a spare moment. :D

Well, comic wise, I've run into a bit of writer's/artist's block. :( I'll see how it works out in the next few days. I was hoping to write a long script so that I could have everything planned out for a while, but after going through lame idea after lame idea, I've come to a brick wall.

Life wise, I'm still pretty busy, but it should be manageable. ^__^

I don't know if I'm going to be able to continue this any time in the near future. I haven't found the time to draw anything at all lately. I keep telling myself that I'll get around to working on it some more, but so far I haven't been able to. I'm sorry for letting you guys down.

Hopefully in the near future I'll be able to do more pages, but I'm not feeling optimistic about it right now. :-/

Ah, no worries! I think we all understand making the comic is a time-consuming activity and you do have an outside life.
