I didn't see a thread like this, but then again I didn't look very hard. :o

Simply put, what was your favorite movie this year and why?

I put a bunch of what I consider to be crappy movies to fill some of the 15 slots. I selected 14 of the most successful and/or (key word is "or") best received films. Yes, so "most popular" means crap like New Moon, but hey, some loser might pick it.

Personally, I'm going with District 9.

Terminator: Salvation. It was the only movie I saw this year at the theaters. It was incredibly well done. Every thing from the "I'll be back" joke to the reverse engineered Terminators with the machine guns.

Most of the movies in the poll don't seem like real contenders for best movie of '09 (quality is not a popularity contest).

As for the question, I will need time to think about it, and I'll get back to you on that.

From the poll, I would say The Hangover was my favorite film of the year. I love comedies and this one was surprisingly good! Plus, since I'm a Vegas junkie seeing all the sites on the big screen was a treat.

District 9 and Avatar were other strong contenders of mine.

This brings up the question, what decides "Best Movie"? Is it described by how well it was received by the popular audiences, or by how well it is directed/edited/acted etc.

The second one. People who don't often watch movies and don't know much about movies tend not to be the most reliable when trying to decide which movies are the best.

Moon.

*filler*

No other film managed to be as atmospheric, superbly acted (especially considering it only really has one actor throughout), thrilling and brilliantly directed as this.

Coraline: dark, misleadingly scary, and a brilliant and faithful adaptation of the book, beautifully animated.

If i had to choose another it would be fantastic mr fox.

District 9. Because it wasn't that much scifi and had real world issues.
Avatar had real world issues, but it also had tall blue people, space ships, and magic

Is that Zoe Bowie's film? If so it looks awesome. I didn't know it would get a full DVD release, have to go out and get it.

Yes it is. Apparently another film in the same universe is going to be made. I'm really excited...

I support your decision, but your logic is flawed. District 9 had tall aliens, space ships, and futuristic guns. What makes it less scifi than Avatar?

Avatar is the only one I can really choose because I only saw three new movies the whole year (It was a really off year for movies for me). Harry Potter 6 was good, but I enjoyed Avatar more. Star Trek was good too but I'm not a huge fan, having only seen two episodes prior to seeing the movie.

It's weird, I don't feel like Avatar is truly the best film of the year (even though I loved it), but choosing a movie that I enjoyed less/haven't seen would make little sense...

Hmmmm.

District 9 > Star Trek > Up > Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince > The Hangover > Avatar > Inglorious Basterds > X-Men Origins: Wolverine > Terminator Salvation > Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen.

First two are pretty close, as are the next four. Salvation & Transformers were...abysmal. Never saw Moon, drat!
