View Full Version : Adult Humor in Cartoons

OK, here's the thread where we post clips of adult humor in otherwise family-rated cartoons, stuff the writers managed to sneak past the censors. The following is probably the single most shameless stunt I've ever seen in such a show, something called Road Rovers that I never watched (it's quite furry). Apparently, the writers found out that their show wouldn't be renewed for a second season, so they decided to go out with a bang. And holy moley, what a bang it was.

K46McMq9IF4

The kicker starts at 00:40, but you really want to watch the whole thing for the full effect.

Once you've seen it highlight below to get the double-whammy...

The first Russian last name Exile mentions, which sounds like "Fooshka", is actually spelled "F***a."

No kiddin'.

Then there's the highly amusing matter of Piper's bisexuality on Storm Hawks. It's not really too big a deal to have non-hetero characters in cartoons anymore, what with Him in The Powerpuff Girls and Bobbi Fabulous in Phineas & Ferb being so obviously, flamboyantly gay. But I still get a kick from watching cartoon writers try to get an unconventional (for lack of a better word) sexuality across without ever stating it outright. Here's Piper, for those of you who missed her on the two weeks when Cartoon Network actually gave the show some attention.

Watch her flirt with another girl...

There's this really incredible scene in another episode that's so blatantly Freudian, it blew my mind when I saw it. We have Piper, having fallen down, on her back with her pelvis toward the camera and her legs spread, while a (female) villain stands over her holding a long staff in a very penetrate-y position. Dayumn. I couldn't find any video of it on YouTube, amazingly enough.

Share your own finds here.

I tried to watch the Road Rovers video, but when the Aussie dog started singing, I had to stop. I'll just take your word for it, but yeah, adult humor has been in cartoons forever. Case in point: Animaniacs.

Dude, you have no idea.

That thing in Road Rovers makes the "fingerprints" gag in Animaniacs look extremely tame.

I honestly can't believe they dared to air it even once.

"Hellooooo Nurse" indeed the Animaniacs was quite riské.

I find it hilarious when cartoons sneak in adult humor! It's a shame writers don't do it as much anymore. Also, I know this sounds stupid, but I never understood the "Finger Prince" joke in Animaniacs. I caught on with the rest of the humor after rewatching episodes, but not that joke. I know who Prince is, but I wasn't around when he was big. Did he have some kind of scandal or something? I'd like to know so I don't feel like as much of an idiot.

I was flipping channels once. The team-rocket girl from Pokemon(Jesse I think?) was yelling at someone and a billboard in the background had PMS in big pink letters.

Epic! I never saw that, but then again, I was never an avid viewer of the show.

The adult/dark humor of The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy is what made it such a good show.

But after the second season (the one after they got rid of ECC), the show really went downhill.

Better? Better how? The later episodes didn't make any sense (like the one about Billy's Hannah-Barbera-esque pet dog who makes wacky sound effects when he walks and can summon canned laugther at will, all staged as though the characters were on a talk show... what was that!?) and for some reason, they started painting the entire backgrounds in a single color whereas previously the show had been very colorful.

But "Duck!" was good.

You may not understand it, but that was part of the "better" he mentioned. The show went completely batshit and that is awesome.

Didn't Billy say something along the lines of "She's crippling with the onslaught of menopause," when referring to his mother?

Here's me trying too hard:

In an episode of Invader Zim, he says, "She may be useful in assisting me in human affection... which from what I can tell is pain-based."

Refference to masochism.

That is not a reference to masochism. He just assumed it was painful based off the way they scream while having intercourse, dummy face.

She does fit the lesbian stereotype rather well, and he is awfully timid. (Not that being timid implies anything)

Anyhow, I cannot believe of all things Rugrats you did not mention Lipshitz. That has to a be pun. It just has to. He is a psychologist, and shit is spewed from his lips.

Today, my sister was watching fairly odd parents, and they made a reference to the aristocrats. "And then I said 'It's called the aristocrats'". Incase you don't know, the aristocrats is a very dirty joke, that got it's own documentary a few years ago.
Also, on an episode of spongebob, squidward makes a reference to Carlin's 7 dirty words you can't say on television.
