I think I figured out the proper technique. :)
And no, it's not only about rhyming the last two words of each phrase in the rhyme.
It all depends on syllable count. :teach: If the syllable count is too long, or uneven on one side of the rhyme, than the rhyme will sound weird.
Grunty Rhymes are composed of two rhyming lines, and are, on average, 14-16 syllables in length. That's about 7-8 syllables for each part of the rhyme.
Example:
It really does sound quite absurd, adventure of a bear and bird!
Let's break this one up, shall we?
"It-real-ly-does-sound-quite-ab-surd" is the first part of the line, and is 8 syllables in length.
"ad-ven-ture-of-a-bear-and-bird" is the last part of the line, also 8 syllables.
Grunty's rhymes aren't always symetrical in syllable length:
Your feathered buddy, that you've brung, useless like a pile of dung!
"Your-fea-thered-bud-dy-that-you've-brung" is 8 syllables, "use-less-like-a-pile-of-dung" is 7 syllables, but it still sounds like a proper Grunty Rhyme due to being within the 14-16 syllable bracket.
Now I've heard a few people say that Grunty's rhymes in Nuts & Bolts were weak, and nostalgia was most likely not a factor in their conclusion.
The reason for those rhymes sounding weak: they don't follow the formula, and are either uneven, or too long.
While you slept I've become a mechanic, building Gruntbots to make you panic!
"While-you-slept-I've-be-come-a-me-chan-ic," is a whopping 10 syllables in length, while "buil-ding-Grunt-bots-to-make-you-pan-ic" is 9. That's 19 syllables total, and sounds rather weird when compared to a 14-16 syllable rhyme.
At least I haven't got a gut! Let's rumble now, I'll kick your butt!
The above rhyme is one of the better ones in the game, and sounds much more like a classic Grunty Rhyme. It falls within the correct syllable count.
Yes, it's me, you podgy fool! I'm back again and ready to rule!
The first part is 7 syllables long, but still sounds weird due to the other half being 9.
We can fix this one by changing the word "ready" to a single syllable word "set."
Yes, it's me, you podgy fool! I'm back again and set to rule!
Sound better? I thought so.
Overall, for those of you who for whatever reason, come up with Grunty Rhymes on occasion, remember your syllable counts!
That is all.
