Personally, I think its weird to have a fish as a pet. If you have an aquarium, which are really pricey, I think it's ok, because you give them a big enough habitat in order to survive, but if its a fish tank, i think it's cruel. What's the point of a fish anyways? They can't cuddle, and they really don't have personalities. I mean, they do to an extent, but they're not comparable to dogs. What do you think about fish as pets? Am I crazy? I'm not in PETA or anything, I just don't think we should pluck fish from the water!

I guess they make more of an amusing/relaxing view than a pet, I think an aquarium is more of a moving decorative object than truly a pet container.

There is a aquarium in my house, the only thing I don't like about it is the bloody noise it makes D:

I agree completely with you. Keeping them as pets for a habitat not even 1/1000th of the natural areas they'd be in is cruel. I don't see them as real pets.

I'm a bit weird on birds though. I have 3. :V

I own a few (around ten) Koi in a pond in my front yard. Not so much as a companion pet as they are one to just to observe.

Fish are pets in the sense that we take care of their well-being, feed them, etc. for our enjoyment. Not in the same way as a dog; dogs are companions. Fish are biological toys if anything else. We just keep them because they're relaxing to look at.

As is having a house cat. Didn't stop me though.

Do fish know the difference between a tank and an aquarium though?

When I was younger I liked fish as pets a lot. Sure, they don't really do much and they can't be affectionate like cats or dogs, but they're fun/pretty to look at sometimes and they provide you with something to care of.

Fish are somewhat hard to look after, however. Unless you have a goldfish or something like that, there's a lot of maintenance work involved. You know, cleaning the tank, making sure the pH level is right, etc. That's why I don't really like them anymore.

Interestingly, an algae eater (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_mHCDhgI6eY4/SwRyDcPLsnI/AAAAAAAABCg/8QcuAVeuzTU/s1600/blakeandmimy.jpg) I got in 1999 is still alive! I didn't even know fish lived that long! It's outlived all of the other fish I've had by several years. It's also amazingly huge now... About a half a foot long! It's a bit freaky and gross to look at. :P

Sucker fish! 8D

Sad thing is, one of mine was brutally murdered by our fish. My Dad found it's bones while cleaning the tank one day. Its bones.

Haha, bones? Hungry much?

My story is just the opposite. This algae eater I'm talking about killed one of my other fish. We found it sucking on the dead fish. The dead fish was once a nice deep blue, but the algae eater sucked off all its scales and it was pure white! Oddest thing and gross, but somewhat amusing... o-O

OMG I was just about to say something about my algae eater too. They gut HUGE! We've had it since 1998 or something. He needs a bigger tank, actually. XD

I guess I have plenty to look forward to with mine. He lives with three turtles.

If I had an outdoor pond or a badass big tank, I'd probably have fish, but only to serve the purpose of filling said pond or tank.

I used to love fish and own a million of them. Now they scare the snot out of me and I will never own one ever again.

I think we should hear the story behind this.

I've actually never had a fish as a pet.

My sister had a goldfish in her apartment at one time. Typically, it didn't live long.

We have a bunch of fish in the courtyard pond at school.

They always just sit around at the bottom of the pond, we rarely ever see them move. I think they are afraid of their rabbit overlords.

I use to have two goldfish, Goldy and Finny, they've been dead for a year now. If I ever get any more fish, I'd probably get some snails, fish that can mate in good-sized tanks, and some algae-eaters, (seeing how they live long, clean your tanks, and can feed themselves). Also, can you legally purchase sea-horses? If so, than I want those too.

I don't know what happened, really. I was on vacation in San Francisco and had a panic attack in the shark tunnel at the Aquarium of the Bay. Ever since, all fish are the devil. Except the Mexican Walking Fish (http://humormepastry.files.wordpress.com/2009/01/mexican-walking-fish.jpg).
