Seriously guys, I finished the main story last friday and have been hunting down every sidequest I can.
Sure is lineal as shit and has little to no gameplay (unless you actually choose your commands like i do) but come on.... it's really good.

I think Final fantasy X was the last great FF.
Everyone after that was not too great. And before that, FFVII, and VIII were pretty good as well.
I might get around to playing FFXIII, but I can't play FF games whenever I want. I have to be in the mood for a JRPG. Because of this, I can't buy any FF games until they are at least 5 years old. I'm only joking, but I bought FFVII when it came out on the PSN store, and I got FFVIII and FFX last year sometime. I'll get XIII when its somewhere around $20.

I played it frequently for a period of time, but now it just collects dust until I decide to tidy up my gaming collection. I was so drawn in by the plot and atmosphere that I couldn't stop playing, but once I completed the main quest I had no urge to continue with it. Don't get me wrong, I love the game. I just think it is story driven, and in FFXIII's case, when you take the story away (I.E. complete the game), the gameplay feels pointless and linear.

No, FF13 is terrible.
Let's start with the discs themselves. I don't mind that there are three of them for the 360 version, BUT DON'T FREAKING STACK THEM ON TOP OF EACH OTHER IN A WAY THAT CAN DAMAGE THE DISCS AND MAKE THEM HARD TO GET AT.

Boxes are relatively cheap to produce compared to game production. THERE'S NO REASON NOT TO PUT IN TWO OF THOSE STUPID FLAPS IN THE DAMN BOXES TO AT LEAST PREVENT THE DISCS FROM SCRATCHING EACH OTHER.
Hope's entire motivation of hating Snow is completely illogical and unreasonable, Cid Raines was probably the worst written traitor in fiction ever, Lightning is the dullest lead in a game I've ever seen this generation and is honestly just stupid ("I HATE YOU SNOW BECAUSE YOU BELIEVED THAT MY SISTER WAS TURNED INTO A L'CIE. THAT MAKES SENSE RIGHT.") and the whole reveal of Barthandelus being a fal'Cie was just ridiculous (DURHUR LET'S PROVIDE THE GAMERS WITH A LEGITIMATE REASON TO HATE THIS BLONDE CHICK AND JUST KILL HER OFF TO BE CLEVER).
The gameplay is just dumb. You have absolutely no control over your other party members (Kind of essential in a semi-turn based game), YOU FREAKING GET A GAME OVER IF YOUR PARTY LEADER DIED (No excuse for this at all), battles are based on stats and very little strategy, the first paradigm shift is ungodly long (I've actually lost battles because characters getting killed while I was shifting), there are pretty much no towns and minigames between chapters, gil takes freaking forever to get, crystarium takes stupid long to grind , the Eidolin battles are random amd deus ex machinas (Hope: lol I get over my issues because a giant monster appeared before me that is somehow different from the other ones I killed when I was depressed) and don't even require BATTLING but instead some boring method of debuffing, guarding or whatever the hell else, AND FINALLY you have to use Libra two or three times before you even get all the information on them. Oh wait you could just buy Scopes or whatever they are called. Oh wait, gil is ridiculously random to get in this game.
Terrible game, dumb story, irrational characters, bad gameplay. How anyone likes this I will never understand.
At the least the soundtrack and graphics are good.

But the Cie'th missions are great D:
I also have to confess that I'm one of the VERY few people who actually likes X-2 a lot. The battle system is great IMO and personally, I love Rikku. But then again, I don't even think it should be considered cannon to X's storyline.
My favorite FFs are VI, VII and X. But X-2, XI and XIII are really underrated gems.

I stopped in the middle of my first Cie'th mission because it was so boring just walking and avoiding monsters I couldn't kill. I never did get to my first objective.

I don't think putting all the discs in there is Square's fault. Lost Odyssey did this as well and it was FOUR discs. Shame on you for not owning a PS3.
Hope just hated the guy because his mother died because of him. At first he was blaming Snow and the reaction seems completely logical to me. The stupid thing here is that he took waaaay too long to TALK to Snow about it but that's how japanese people are. After this, Hope actually becomes a great character, he motivates the party a lot and is vey helpful.
Light didn't hate Snow because he believed Serah could complete her focus, she was just acting like she was taught to. L'cie were believe to be sick people who brought calamity. When Lighting (who is a military) knew Serah became a L'cie her first reaction was to reject her and her romance with Snow. I don't see anything wrong with this.
While I agree you should have control over all 3 party members in-battle I must STRONGLY disagree about the game not requiring a little strategy. Most battles require creating specific paradigms depending on the characters you are using and in most cases with bosses or strong enemies staggering them can be a pain if you don't use the required abilities. The gameplay could be much better, yes. But it's not horrible.
The summons are just 6 battles out of hundreds maybe thousands you're gonna fight in the game. If you didn't like them, it's not a reason to hate the game because of 6 fights. ALSO, the objective in those were to make the Eidolons accept you, not just defeat them. The game explains that very clearly.
You can hate the game if you want but I don't agree with the reasons you gave us.

Did Lost Odyssey stack the discs DIRECTLY ON TOP OF EACH OTHER. AS IN, DISCS TOUCHING?

Logical? How about blaming THE PEOPLE THAT ACTUALLY ATTACKED HIS MOTHER AND SNOW? How about blaming his own mother FOR ABANDONING HIM?

It still doesn't make sense. "L'cie are bad... BECAUSE L'CIE ARE BAD!"
I guess I can give this one to you though.

Switching to ravanger or debuffer and sentinel even less than those every now and then is barely strategy.

I don't hate the game because of just six fights. This is just one reason out the several I posted.
Also, I don't care about whatever contrived plot reason they had for the gameplay in those sections. IT JUST WASN'T FUN.

Let's put it this way man.
Hope is a kid, at first he's not mature enough to blame his mother for abandoning him, remember he adored his mom and hated his dad.
If I were in an armed conflict and my mother dies because some guy let her fall and then I see that same guy smiling and claiming to be the hero who is going to save his love. I would ****ing hate him man. To me, Hope's reaction to him mother's death is completely reasonable. The shitty thing here is that he took too long to actually blame Snow and try to do something about it.
and yes, LO put the discs on top of each other, it's actually VERY hard to put them out of the box.

Snow didn't let her fall. He was reaching out to her and trying to save her. AND HOPE WATCHED!
But wait, a hero who fails in saving a girl is somehow worse than the villains who actually attacked. The fact that a 14 year old thinks this is astounding.
Let's also not forget that Nora failed to mention to Snow her son's name that she begged him to protect, which is why Snow was so confused at who she was talking about in that first hour or so of the game (Which you just lost btw).
"Put them out.." ?
My concern is more of the discs scratching each other, but also having to lift two discs out of the box before I can grab the third one. My apologies if that wasn't made clear enough.

Yeah yeah I understand man *is a foreigner*. I had to put 3 of LO's discs somewhere else :/
Hope also hated the soldiers who attacked his mother, that's just logical but to him, the guy who actually motivated his mother to grab a gun and fight instead of running away with him was also to blame. For me, it makes complete sense.

Snow didn't even directly motivate his mother IIRC. He was just talking to a crowd.
Once again, this is something Norman Bates should BLAME HIS MOTHER FOR.
Honestly, I thought Emil was a bad character until I met Hope. At least Emil was more justified in his hatred for Lloyd.

Avarice, I have never seen someone have as many problems in the game as you had. I'm not talking about your opinion of the story, either. You're doing something wrong when playing.

It would be pretty hard to play this overall easy game any other way than intended. Especially considering very few of my complaints are related to skill required to play the game.

You're already convinced Hope's motivation is not justified and nothing I say will change your mind so I just give up. (Emil is a god damned idiot btw)
Skill in a single player¿ that doesn't make sense man.
Take Mario Galaxy, i've been playing it since saturday and while it is great, it's so easy it not even funny. Since saturday i've gotten 80 stars. Saying FF13 is bad because it's easy or does not require skill is just silly because it's a JRPG.
I tried my best to explain the stuff you didn't like about the game, in a language that it's not mine but you seem too stubborn to change your mind. I'm not saying this to troll people but FF13 is a great game and it deserves much more love than many crappy FPS out there.

Why you're comparing FF13 to the FPS genre or Mario Galaxy is beyond me.
Also, I'm convinced Hope's motivation isn't justified because guess what? It isn't.

I liked the game and enjoyed the ride despite it's flaws, but yeah Hope's totally retarded. Durrrr my mom who decided to go guns blazing died because Snow wasn't able to pull here while I actually watched without doing anything so I'll hold a grudge for half the game while at the same time being a ***** and not actually telling him about it herp derp.
That and other elements of the plot and character interaction, provided you took them with a little naiveté (pretty much the same way you have to look at almost every anime too) where quite ok though.

Yeah, I loved the game too. But I just couldn't do the side missions because there was no point for me.

Unlocking trophies is my reason for doing it.
Also, I keep thinking that Hope's reaction, although immature, was justified and I do understand the kid
Avarice
9th June 2010, 09:47 PM
Hope's justification would work if
1) He hadn't seen Snow try and save his mother
2) He had heard from someone else that misinterpreted the situation
3) His mother wasn't a terrible person who abandoned him
i.e. Make Hope's justification more like Emil's and it makes ten times more sense.

I'm actually surprised most people raged at the linear parts, because they were the only parts of the game where I was somewhat entertained. :p After that awful forest chapter, the game was pretty neat up until that chapter before you go to Pulse. Some of the battles late game just got so boring since they treat them like minibosses and you have to fight slightly differing waves of the same enemies that all boil down to spamming buffs and debuffs and waiting to shift your paradigm. Since you do the same routine most battles, it makes the bosses less climatic for me.
What bothered me mostly about the plot was how they set it up. The game had a lot of potential after they were branded l'Cie, plus Sazh says some line like "So now we're working for the bad guys?", but then the entire game turns into nothing more than you trying to find a loophole out of your Focus. Scenarios like Sazh's where he was trying to save his son despite him being a different type of l'Cie were the only interesting conflicts in the game, and that's forgot about as soon as you beat Barthandelus for the first time. Although I could be wrong because I can't say I was really focusing on the plot around Chapter 12.
