Either way, how are you celebrating your 9/11? I'm probably just going to stay at home and watch some movies that have nothing to do with that date; maybe play some video games... who knows! On 9/11 you never know what kind of wacky shenanigans can happen on such a holiday!

It's been 9/11 for a good 2 hours now. 9 years ago, I didn't really have that much of a comprehension of death, so while I recognize that it was terrible, for me, it just interrupted reading class.

Well I got in to a friends house at 4am and stayed the night there, woke up this morning and it's her birthday. Couldn't stay around too long as I'm going to see Muse today at Wembley Stadium and had to get showered/ready and things, leaving in an hour. So this at the moment is a short break before I eat then leave, then tonight I'll be getting in late shattered from the club last night and then shattered from tonight obviously.
All pretty good though! :D
Although as she does keep kindly reminding me I do feel quite bad for abandoning her on her birthday.

meh...I had friends who passed in the Pentagon when it was hit those 9 years ago.... -sigh- so I take this a bit more serious than most... but a lot has happened since then. Sure I'm going to briefly honor the dead, but I'm also going to be doing other things today....like filming for some friends and going to be a DJ for local school radio.

I guess we can't say "you couldn't even catch a cold" either because 36,000 people die each year from complications with it, amirite? I guess we can't make jokes about people eating too quickly because a good 150 kids a year die from choking on food.
Not to sound insensitive, but that happened 9 years ago. As much as my heart goes out to those families, people die every day, all the time, for stupid reasons. There's nothing we can do after the fact, so really, getting angry about someone making light of it is pretty over sensitive.

And sobbing like a baby nine years after the fact does? Lighten up. Just because the attack was made on American soil doesn't mean it's the worst thing to happen in the history of the planet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Where_Were_You_(When_the_World_Stopped_Turning)). Remember back in 2004 when the Tsunami devestated the Indian Ocean and 230 000 people died? Remember in 2005 when everyone stopped giving a shit and focused all their attention to Hurricane Katrina because New Orleans was flooded? Yeah. American arrogance.
but there are plenty of people still affected by this who could be taking this much, much worse. The people still crying.
And they need to lighten the **** up too.
2001, yeah. 2002, still reasonable. 2003, alright. 2004, pushing it a little. 2005+ drop the "NEVAR 4GET" shit and let it fade into the pages of history where it belongs. Six million jews died in the holocaust, do they still bring it up 24/7? No.

No. Wrong. Wow. Unbelievable. Get out. :(
@Tanjo: It is still extremely relevant. People are still losing their lives because of extremist groups like Al Qaeda. I guess you could say the same about Katrina because New Orleans is still shit, but you can't conntrol what people get offended by. I'm not defending the guy who says "This may not be offensive to me but it is to some people" either though. Good for them if they're still crying. People have the right to do that. When was MasterGamePro getting angry, when was he getting all sob story over the whole thing? The dude isn't over reacting at all. He's reacting like most people should. This wasn't just an attack on American soil that killed 3000 people, this event launched us into the Middle Eastern war, and whether you agree with the motives of this war. This war has caused the death of over 100,000 Iraqi citizens and over 4,000 of our own US troops have been killed and 30,000 wounded in Iraq online. And we aren't even finished with this conflict. Bottom line, I don't think an appriate start and/or response to a 9/11 thread is a joke, I know the internet isn't supposed to have class, but you don't go around publically making fun of a tragic event that happened in history, and no, its not behind us. Because if it was behind us, we wouldn't have an conflict with the middle east right now.

I think that would be a more valid point to make if we actually went after the people who attacked us. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. You'd think if it was so damn important, we would've gone after the right people.

No one's "making fun" of anything. The jokes aren't aimed at the people who died, the jokes don't harm anyone, and people get a laugh out of how absurd a joke about 9/11 is. For example, EXTREME JENGA isn't making fun of the people who died, but the event does seem like Jenga on a big and violent scale. That's absurd. It makes people laugh. If anything, it shows respect. People are free to make jokes about whatever they want, and making jokes about 9/11 is, I maintain, a solid way of reaffirming that first amendment right you hold in such high regard. And what about your "fellow" Americans? Did you know them? If you did, so what? What about your fellow human beings that have died in other tragedies that people have the gall to "make fun" of? There's enough sentimental bullshit to go around. Being sad because they are born in the country you were born in is a personal reason. You don't have the right to stop other people from making jokes just because you are personally offended, nor is it necessary for people to care about 9/11. I do, for the record, but if someone else doesn't, I can't change that. Now stop telling other people what they should or should not say or do.
Also, for anyone who cares since it's related to the topic, this video was taken about two seconds before the first plane struck the building. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bn1MbU9jOeA)

People do weed, weed makes money, money+weed lead to cartels, cartels don't like other cartels, cartels go on war, government wants to fight war, cartels get a bit weak, cartels are angry, cartels need money, cartels kidnap and threaten civilians for money, My dad happens to be a threatened civilian.

If you joked about people senselessly dying in drug wars on a day to day basis it would be a better comparison.

When was I stopping people from making jokes about 9/11? I believe I started posting on this thread because someone else said they were offended by this thread, and they got flamed. I'm posting on how I'm offended at this thread, and I'm defending another member who expresses similar feelings. I never said this thread should be stopped, or that these people should be banned or posts erased, I just now feel differently towards certain members for the actions made in this thread. Being offended at something isn't violating someone else's first amendment.
People are free to make jokes about whatever they want, and making jokes about 9/11 is, I maintain, a solid way of reaffirming that first amendment right you hold in such high regard.
The first amendment protects your right to free speech, but it doesn't protect your right to be criticized on that such free speech. I never reported any posts, I never requested any posts be deleted, I never requested any posters be suspended. All I did was criticize the words of some posters here, and that's my right to the first amendment.

Yes, I did say that. There is my inconsistency in my argument. I was trying to say how I can't make a joke about this subject and most of my friends can't make jokes about it. I was surprised by the amount of people here who were ably willing to make a joke about the topic, so I posted how I was offended.

I can't believe you don't remember 9/11. I was in the 2nd grade when it happened. I remember what happened and how my family reacted.
And I'm supposed to get offended at a joke that in no way affects me at all? If I was Jewish, maybe I would be offended, but I'm not. I don't know anyone who was in the holocaust (Gee I wonder why?) and I don't have any family members (to my knowledge) that were in the holocaust.
I'm offended by jokes made about 9/11 because there were 4 planes that were hijacked and crashed into two buildings. I travel a lot, my dad travels a lot, a lot of my family travels a lot. Just the thought that someone I knew and loved could've been on one of those planes makes me terrified. The thought that this (even though it probably won't) could still happen, terrifies me. What if I'm on a plane that gets hijacked?
So if you lived through the Holocaust you'd be bitching and whining about Holocaust jokes? Just sayin'.
So now I'm bitching and whining? I wouldn't bitch and whine and moan, I would be offending like I have been in this thread.
I don't know if this has crossed anyone's mind, but the Holocaust happened Almost 70 years ago. 9/11 happened just under 10 years ago. I guess there is a point where people eventually move on, but when we are still having conflicts with the middle east because of the events that happened 9 years ago, then its too soon.

But it didn't. I've heard of people being scared that something bad might happen in the future, but never have I heard of someone being scared something bad might happen in the past. That one event didn't happen to them. There's nothing left to be scared of, unless you think the terrorists are going to travel back in time, and somehow make your loved ones die in 9/11.

I think the whole comparison of "People die from colds everyday can we not make jokes about that?" is kind of missing the point. Someone in this thread has said that they knew people who died in the attack, so a thread like this could be offensive to them. This is all MGP and cooperace are trying to say and they're right. If someone you knew we're to say die from a cold, and I were to create a thread saying "Happy day that [your family member here] died from a cold day" you would get offended, no matter how long ago that it happened. I just can't take a response of "No I wouldn't care because it's a joke" seriously. Making a joke about colds (However you are able to do that) = Acceptable. Making a joke dedicated to how someone personally died from a cold = Not so acceptable.

Airman
14th September 2010, 05:59 AM
OK, let me rephrase. Not the fact that it was mentioned, the fact that it was mentioned and then subsequently joked about. Mentioning something casually and wisecracking about it are two different things. Even though I know threads like this aren't meant to be taken seriously, some people don't have the ability to do that if it affected them on a personal level. As an example, I would be offended if someone were to make a joke about how someone I knew died. If I didn't know the person who died, I wouldn't be personally offended by the joke, but someone who did know this person could and usually will be offended. It all depends on their predisposition or their natural tendencies. I'm not saying you can't make jokes, but telling people who are offended to harden up and get over it isn't exactly a step in the right direction..

Your confusion would be immediately replaced with rage. You may have the common sense to know that this is the internet and people will say what they want, but that doesn't defeat the fact that someone you cared for died, and someone somewhere out there is happy because of it.

No it isn't. People need that emotional release. It's better than bottling up and you'll have to either bottle it up or release it because grief is pretty much inevitable for most people. Crying and talking about the person and perhaps celebrating the life they lived and mourning their death is much more productive than to hold it all in. Besides, how are you so busy that mourning the death of a loved one "is a waste of time"? Are you heading to a volcano to throw a ring into the lava?

Irrelevant. You're being far too general. You act like saying "My grandma died in a hospital and I get upset when hospitals are mentioned." would be the same as saying "Someone in my life got killed in 9/11 and I get upset when people joke around about it"
The key difference is the disrespect and jokes. A hospital merely being mentioned does not insult your grandmother.

Yes, but if it was called "L33T'S SISTER CAR ACCIDENT" and they had people applauding and laughing with joy I bet you would be pretty upset.
Irrelevant. You're being far too general. You act like saying "My grandma died in a hospital and I get upset when hospitals are mentioned." would be the same as saying "Someone in my life got killed in 9/11 and I get upset when people joke around about it"
All of his comparisons? Really Leet? Every single one of them?
Pretty much, yeah.

Haha, yeah. That's what we all do on the internet. HOLOCAUST LOL! xD Uh, wow "Jew", maybe go stick your head in an oven? For the win!
People who can't take jokes are just ****ing retarded. Black people laugh at jokes about black people because they've gotten over it. They've moved on. Sure there are still black people who blame white people for slavery, but that's because they're stupid.
Yes, there are jokes that are offensive. There are jokes about slavery, there are jokes about fat people, there are jokes about 9/11. I'm not saying they're the highest form of humor, but being this offended by them is ridiculous.
9/11 happened 9 years ago. Where do you draw the line on grieving? If you're this sensitive about things, maybe see a psychiatrist and stay away from any social situations, as you probably already do.
Here, watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmtUStAK75Q&feature=related
I could laugh at a black joke, a fat joke, a white joke or a spanish joke. Shit, I'd even laugh at a (really funny) 9/11 joke because I didn't lose anyone to it. I believe you're missing the point. I would not however laugh at a 9/11 joke if it was the day a relative of mine died.
All I'm trying to say is, the people who get offended by things that others find funny most likely have a good reason for it.
I meant here, but whatever.
That's just retarded. It's a joke. It's meant to be funny. Even besides that, he said two words. Two. Bloody. Words. "Happy 9/11". You know, a funny juxtaposition of "happy" and a national tragedy. To be ironic. Not to say, "HAHAHAHAPEOPLE DIED TODAY!" or "ISN"T IT HILARIOUS HOW SOMEONE LOST THEIR FAMILY MEMBER?! ISN"T IT?!" Shut. Up.
When you insult the day someone died or mock it or whatever the hell you're trying to turn it into now, it hurts people's feelings or better yet, brings a certain sadness about them. I don't know how I can make it any clearer.
Saying Happy 9/11 is bad because it's not happy, people died. You guys are all sitting here saying "Get over it, it was 9 years ago" which I agree with. There always comes a time when you have to move on from past loses, but that doesn't mean that people clowning on it several years later won't evoke an emotional response.
And that, my friends, is what I'm trying to say.
I love how you make it sound as if we ever singled out a particular person who died (something all of your comparisons seem to hinge on).
No, I'm making it sound like joking about a day where friends or family have died offends the people who have lost them. Can you comprehend this? I know, mind boggling.
Pretty much, yeah.
Those quotes didn't even prove anything. I never said you guys singled out anyone, I only said that joking about 9/11 is bad and by you laughing at a 9/11 joke or making one yourself, you may be upsetting people.

Well I was in the 2nd grade when 9/11 happened, and I have no real memory of it whatsoever. Therefore, jokes are acceptable. :)
They aren't for me, bro. I was on a field trip for school. I was actually relatively close to it too. I was in north Jersey. If I was on top of mountain, I could have seen it happen.Did anyone here lose someone to the terrorist attack on 9/11?
Anyone?
Yes.

What I think is funny is that most of the people making 9/11 jokes here were too little to remember the event. :P I don't think they got traumatized or shocked like most other older people. 9/11 jokes don't bother me though. It's been 9 years... Move on and grow a sense of humor, even if it is a little dark and twisted.

This was never about that though.
You seem to think the main quarrel with the thread is its title. It's not. In fact I wasn't even going to bother posting (Also, notice DarkJinjo posted without any troubles until offensive jokes were made). I was talking about the jokes that were posted and how it will offend people. That's all. Then I said imagine if your family were to die and someone were to joke about it to the same scale as was seen in the thread. So, again saying you wouldn't get upset if someone mentioned a hospital where your grandmother died is missing the point completely. I'm not going to make a joke as an example, but it most probably would upset you if I made a joke. Do you think someone who lost their loved one would, even after 9 years go "Wow, like a crazy person I'm getting upset because someone is joking about an event in which someone I loved died. I do need to grow a darker sense of humor"? Of course not.
For the record, didn't laugh at the Youtube video, I don't like holocaust jokes, rape jokes, 9/11 jokes, jokes that mock where people have suffered and/or died, I'm just crazy like that..

so my friend harry goldstein opened his own shop called the mall-o-cost.

Yep, because that's exactly what people do when they don't get jokes, they get offended. They don't say, "I don't get it.", they get all offended.
I don't know if you are trolling, but if you are, you aren't doing and very good job and just taking up space on the site.

Guys, bypass the bullshit and stop biting at each other's cocks. People will get offended at this stuff. It's inevitable. As much as I like dark humour, I think it's ridiculous that you guys are trying to convince people from being offended when someone tells a joke about an event in which a loved one could have been killed.

Yes you cannot control what other people get offended by so in conclusion: **** off
And also voicing your opinion no matter what it is (for example if you've just taken offense to something) is another one of those "American" values, right there in the constitution, freedom of expression.

To be honest I'm not convinced having hate speech be illegal is a necessarily bad thing itself.
Though when you can take legitimate criticisms of a person, religion etc. and classify that as hate speech I suppose that would be an issue.

It's about the consequences of making it illegal. There would have to be an appropriate punishment, and that would be something impossible to determine. It's not as if people would just start speaking nicely to each other and personally, I think it would make everything very boring and fake. Besides, who would take on the job of classifying something as "offensive", and, since words are all about context, who would determine which contexts were ok and which weren't? Not only is it silly to illegalize hate speech, it's a bad thing.
Obviously you're not talking abot the plausability of illegalizing it, but even the notion of people being forced to pretend to be nice to each other is something that I can't support in the slightest.

It seems to me that it's not really the kind of thing that should be laughed about, or to cry over. It's not funny that a whole lot of people died that day, and it's not a time to be crying. I mean I'm saddened by my mom's death, but I hardly even noticed her "Deathaversary) because I'm not really all that sad about it anymore, I got over it. It's the kind of thing that shouldn't be either way, it should just be neutral. I certainly don't think it's the kind of thing to be laughing or crying about. Just talked about it with a certain sense of decency.
