View Full Version : RWP Minecraft Server?

I've noticed the game server section at the top of the page. Is it at all possible to run a Minecraft server as well? Do any other members have servers?

I figured there are a lot of RWP members play the game so it might be worthwhile. I'd run one myself but I've never been able to open my ports.

I'd play, but I can only play the free version :x...

Already invested too much into another server.. So I don't think I'll join a RWP server

I've not looked at Minecraft. What's the deal with servers? How many slots is best etc.

I don't know about the specifics, but we definitely wouldn't need more than 15 slots. Not a ton of people here play Minecraft, from what I've seen.

I was asking more of a general game question. They would be provided as a public server, so how many people play here isn't that relevant. I wondered how many slots are needed to make it a decent public server. That is provided that servers aren't just private.

Well, things turn to chaos pretty quick in servers (at least in the public maps.) From what I gathered, you can have different maps on one server, and allow certain people to build/destroy in those certain maps. I played in one with about 25 people, and it was pretty fun until some random person came in and destroyed our hard work -_-.

Seen a few with like, 75 people as well. It really depends on how respectful everyone is, I guess.

So it sounds like a private server is probably the best way to go.

Madous

The way most players do it, is they make a private server and hide the IP. You cannot connect without an IP as there is no game listing. From there, the creator of the server gives the IP to people who wish to join. It would be helpful if you made a post somewhere with the IP to join, yet hid it from people who were not registered (if you can even do that?).

Yeah, we can do that, otherwise muggles would be in the staff forum :p

Is it very network intensive? i.e Can we get away with a European server.

Articerile
15th December 2010, 09:14 PM
I wouldn't say it was that intensive, it depends how many mods you add, (I mean mods as in modifications opposed to moderators)

wkw427
15th December 2010, 09:30 PM
Its not so network intensive, but more hardware..

I mean, the bigger the map, the more lag you will have.

The shaftlands has HUGE lag...

I don't think so. I played in one, and I'm from New York :p. As long as it's not like, 100 people I assume.

lolreally.

Although, I don't think there's many mods that increase network load?

Oh wow I just made a thread about this and completely overlooked this one.

Anyway, I recently hosted a Minecraft server and I have a good idea how to do it with other kinds of router should anyone trying to set one up need assistance. I only hosted about four people but it was lots of fun, so long as people stick to their own land and are respectful it seems to work ok. I just used a standard generated map, took me a while to get one that didn't suck (deserts ftl) though.

Just spent 3 hours trying to open my ports. Wasn't pretty.

Anyway, I've heard of most servers having a 16 person load, but those are massively public servers. As has been mentioned, there's no listing, so really only RWP members would connect. I've heard mixed things about the hardware and network intensity of the server.

If you provide good hardware you can get a good, non laggy server. Ban the people who don't follow the rules (ie no griefing) and try and keep it Vanilla. (Although get the Hey0 server anyway, warps and home commands are always good.) I set a server up the other day, my computer and home network could handle about 5 people fine. Not a big map though.

EDIT: the server I frequent can have a max of about 100 people at once, gets REAL lag though - but even on a huge map. It handles 30 people on a regular basis with ease. Its just a case of how much the server side can process, it's not very network intensive.

DementedSun
16th December 2010, 09:47 PM
Oh, if we do get a server can we get the (mod?) that allows us to fly around, so we can actually build stuff easily :P? I also know there's a way to make the random people join unable to delete blocks that the registered members have made.

Articerile
16th December 2010, 10:14 PM
I'd say Hey0 and Runecraft from personal experience, but there are a couple of runes you'd want to ban if you put it in.

Sekna
17th December 2010, 04:41 AM
Chilli that means it's not gonna be too vanilla, and exploring and running form enemies wouldn't be fun anymore... We'd need possibly a creative server AND and normal server to satisfy everyone. '._.
Also Articerile, is Runecraft really that useful or does it start to feel a bit strayed away from the original game a bit? Never tried it myself.

Let's just have a regular survival server.

Enemies O_o.. What kind of server is even being made?... The ones I've played in were all dedicated to building stuff, there wasn't any pre built things or enemies.

Servers are exactly like co-op single player now. Notch has practically made it identical except for lots (I mean lots) of bugs.

Is it from the free version?

I was thinking the same thing. Now that Beta's approaching and multiplayer's getting fixed up, having somewhere to go and take advantage of the multiplayer component would be great.

I think a straight vanilla server would be best.

I set up a server on our main computers and its a creative free build. If anyone wants to join they can do so freely just dont destroy anything that others have built and just be generally courteous.

IP is: 121.222.26.106:25565

It closes overnight but whenever I am online the server will be online. If you want to be OP'd just ask.

I am glad you had fun. Well; there are no guarantees when it will be up just check whenever you want to play. If its not up were either asleep or we cant. My mum plays wow all the time and the server lags her computer.

I might try setting up my own server, but my laptop won't be able to do it even though it's really fast, cause I'm always using it and I sometimes do things that would screw up the server (heavy gaming stuff and Blender and video editing and even using it on trips). I have an old Mac mini, but it's a PPC processor which I don't think will do, but luckily for me, my dad kept some of his old computers (the tower kinds) and some of them are a little good for some things, and I could just get some parts to help make them faster, and the best part is that if they work they'll be available 24/7 as long as my internet isn't screwed up entirely.

It'll run on anything as long as it supports Java, Sajextryus.

Yeah, but it can be EXTREMELY slow. And it doesn't have a built in WiFi/Airport Card, so I'd have to complicate things just to get THAT running.

Well its up now. I would set up the server on my Mac but its not working. My other half IHC also has a server but his map is mostly full of holes where weve gone crazy with the tnt. Its not a 24/7 server but its better then nothing :3

Sajextryus
17th February 2011, 03:04 AM
I might be able to set one up.
My parents are getting a new router soon (one that doesn't need to be unplugged and replugged every few hours), and my dad has a computer in our garage that was one of the ones from his old office. He said I can use it for whatever, and if it's fast enough, I should be able to hold a server 24/7.

But I kind of doubt it. I'll try pulling it out tomorrow. It's an old PC tower desktop, and I can't open it up to see what's inside right now since it's stuck under some boxes. I'll post what I find.

We can host an RWP one, but it would probably be at the expense of the TF2 server.

Something tells me the TF2 one gets more traffic than this one ever would. So probably best to just leave things as they are.

EDIT: Though I can personally say I'd use this quite often. And if it's public, a few friends might occasionally use it was well.

So long as there are private and public warps I 'm happy.
Would rather prefer it with mobs and pvp off.. and a whitelist

We need to make Grunty's Lair

I'm sure it is possibly to make all the worlds logically within it... Though most of them will need to have to be walled in with lightstone on the cealing and cloth on the edges.. like, blue in TTC...
