View Full Version : TF2 Vs Minecrack

Vote which one you fall into.. I think a minecraft server would be much better then a tf2 server.. :)
Articerile

A Minecraft server could be used even if there is no-one in it, TF2 requires multiple people, and with a multi-national base it's hard to achieve unless you go out of your way to arrange it..,

Now, why the hell would anyone not have either of those games and still want to set up a server on either of them? That makes no sense to me.
My vote goes to Minecraft, for reasons already explained by Articerile.

Me. I played Minecraft Classic on the site for a little while. I will buy it if RWP gets a server for it.

I really think you made the poll too complex. How about just "Team Fortress 2" and "Minecraft?"
Adam
20th February 2011, 03:02 PM
Now that, I can agree with. What does it matter if you own the games or not?
Articerile
20th February 2011, 03:47 PM
It'd be interesting to see the opinions based on the games owned.
So far the only vote for TF2 is by someone who only owns TF2, those who own neither or both of the games favour Minecraft.

I decided I would look into a server. But I don't know, it would probably get to the point where I'm paying all my money into a server, and not having any money left over.
Anyone else got loads of expendable server money? :P

We can't have a server for both of them? I own both games and would gladly play on both. I guess if it came down to it though, I'd rather play on the Minecraft server.

Ice said in the Minecraft Server thread that a Minecraft server would probably only exist at the expense of the TF2 one.

TF2 has little replay value.. Minecraft, however...

Yes.. there are thousands of good tf2 servers already established..
There are very few minecraft servers that are small enough for a community like us to gather in
That.. and I don't like the Shaftlands, which are so large that it is roughly 100km^3..

Okay, so Ice has entrusted me with setting up the Minecraft server, and I'll need your help.
First of all, what is required to host a server? If there's any programs I'll need to download, please link me to them.
Secondly, I've decided on a 10-man server for now. If the demand is good, I'll raise it. If not, it stays at ten.
Lastly, I'll need to know exactly what to do and how to set it up. Please guide me through it as easily as descriptively as possible as to avoid any confusion. As for the time being, I'll leave out whitelisting and allow anyone who knows the IP to join. If trolling starts to be a problem, I'm active enough to deal with it on my own. If it gets entirely out of hand, I'll then add a whitelist.
tl;dr tell me how to set up the server please.
The only mod I will be adding at this time is the use of the /home command. If you could instruct me on how to install that as well, I'd be happy to add it.
The sooner you guys help, the sooner this will be up and running. I hope to get it all up this weekend.

I was going to find the forums to search, but Minecraft.net is down at the moment and I didn't know the link. I guess that works as well. :p
Edit: I need the multiplayer server files. From Minecraft.net. Which is down. |: I'll post in here again once I hit a roadblock, or if it works.

Sorry for the double post, but you edited.
hMod is no longer maintained. All downloads on this site are outdated and no longer work with the latest minecraft versions.
Please look for an unofficially updated version. If you wish to continue to download, add &ignore to the url like so: http://hey0.net/get.php?dl=serverbeta&ignore
Thanks.

How is this going to be hosted? If you are renting a dedicated server, they sometimes offer auto installers. But Bukkit would be the way to go.
http://wiki.bukkit.org/Setting_up_a_server
If you can't make the .bat file, I have the required one already made.
You use the .bat file to start the server. It will create the files you need. It will also bring up a command prompt menu, where you can view server events (Players connecting, disconnecting, etc), and you can even use server commands. As well as the command 'Stop' which kills the server.
It includes the necessary commands, such as /home.
You can then download plugins to the plugin folder the .bat file will create.
http://wiki.bukkit.org/Plugins_By_Category
http://forums.bukkit.org/forums/plugin-releases.17/
Each plugin page, or thread, has the instructions for setting them up. I'll leave what ones you want to get up to you. Some are very useful for finding griefers.

I'll be doing this in whichever way requires absolutely no money. :p So renting servers is out of the question. I guess that means it'll have to constantly run from my computer, doesn't it?
Spyke4995
25th February 2011, 08:57 PM
It will, most likely. You could set up another machine to run constantly, or just run the server whenever your computer is available.

Luckily for you guys, I leave my computer on 24/7.
Also, could I get that .bat file from you? Notepad is being annoying and won't let me change the file extension for some odd reason.

Haha, what.
It was probably still rendering in your area. If not, then that was pretty wierd. If it continues, close the cmd, and reopen it. If it continues after that, delete the world file in the server's folder, and restart the server.
Oh, just a thought. Have you forwarded port 25565?

I disconnected and reconnected about 3 times. By then, it loaded a single chunk beneath my feet. In the distance I could see mobs hovering and falling. No other chunks were rendering.
I have not forwarded the port yet, but I plan to within an hour or so.
Where is the servers folder so I can delete the world if it continues?

Strange. Seems something is being quite intensive on your servers memory. I usually only get those when I have a mountain of TNT detonating.

Update. I restarted the CMD and found a new error.
"**** NOT ENOUGH RAM ****"
"To start the server with more ram, launch it as "java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar""
How exactly do I do the above? God I'm horrible with this.

I've attached the RUN.bat, edited for more RAM.

Okay, now it runs somewhat smoother. It created one chunk for me to spawn on, and then stopped loading them. I can still see mobs floating off in the distance and a few caves far beneath me. The CMD is still giving me the "Can't keep up" error.

GM, I don't think using your desktop as a dedicated server is a very good idea. I don't want to come as the dark cloud, but everything would be better if we rented a low end server from a proper company. That way they do all the nasty bits.
MC requires pretty much plain old dedicated hardware.. Its not optimized in the slightest. I think that a dedicated rack with 512-1gb of ram will be more then enough for the RWP.. Someones desktop that they use just won't be enough for a 24/7 server.. Plus I can see you're balding over this thing
Madous
25th February 2011, 10:19 PM
The only problems I'm facing is that it isn't loading chunks correctly and efficiently, and that my port isn't forwarded yet. I don't understand how I can have 3 gigs of RAM, but it isn't loading fast enough when you say 1g would be enough.

No, it equals 128kB/s.
It's 1024kb/s.
And net speeds are NEVER measured in kB/s.
wkw427
26th February 2011, 01:07 AM
1 megabit = 128 kilobyte
Firefox measures speeds in byte. Also easier to understand. I know speed is measured in bit, but byte is just much easier to understand.
1Mb = 1024Kb
1MB = 128Kb

There has been some confusion. The server was always going to be dedicated.
Madous
26th February 2011, 04:07 AM
Heh. Yeah. Sorry about all that confusion guys. :p All I need to do is get the few plugins working, manage the whitelist/op list and so forth. It won't be run off of my desktop. I'll take the blame for this one.
As soon as Ice gets the server up and running, I'll tend to it and give you guys the info (If Ice doesn't do it before me. [which he probably will]).
Personally, I don't see the need for a whitelist. I'm active enough to deal with any kind of trolling (if there would be any) and will ban as needed. Besides, it'll get annoying to wake up to 7 requests of "ADD MY NAME TO TEH WITELEEST PLZ". It isn't like the RWP is known for trolling or anything, right?
