Pretty close between Mario and Zelda, but I'll have to choose Mario. I've only liked the 3D Zelda games, and never the 2D ones. Being that the majority of Zelda games are 2D...

Zelda. They're not as common as Mario games, which are also awesome, but you know you're getting something special when they do come around. There's a reason most of the games are covered in gold paint ;)

Have you tried the other games? A lot of fans consider Link to the Past to be the single greatest Zelda game ever... and it really is one of the best. By today's standards it may not be the best looking game, but the gameplay is where it still holds up to this day. Great music, too. Most of my favourite Zelda music comes from that game :)

I played Link's Awakening DX years ago but stopped playing and haven't played it since. I think I got stuck collecting something to open a bridge. I was pretty young though. I might start playing it again soon. So, I've only really got the 3D games to base my opinion on.

That aside though, I have to say that I'm really impressed with the whole concept behind the Kingdom Hearts series. While the mechanics within the game can get repetitive, I do have to say that the storyline concept of connecting so much together is an incredible idea.

(I also have to say that I'm a fan of the Halo series as whole. It's brought multiplayer FPSs on consoles to a new level.)

Sonic is the best. Ok, I never played Zelda, but Sonic beats Mario. Mainly the Mega Drive ones.
There is a fighting game wich I love, too. The King of Fighters, by SNK, is the best enemy of the Street Fighter series... TKOF wins :)

Well, my favourite is S3K, but I rather have both games than choosing between them. Yes, I'm that greedy. So, in the end it doesn't matter much to me which one is my favorite. I'm happy I had the chance to play them all.

Same thing applies to BK and BTooie.
I like Mario, Sonic, Zelda, Megaman, The King Of Fighters, Kirby, Ristar, Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, Gunstar Heroes, Secret of Mana, Donkey Kong Country, and so on...
Of course there are some that I like more than others. But in general I'm anti-extreme fanatism.
