Hey, friend! I don't know if you've noticed but the Admins and Moderators of Rare Witch Project have decided to turn the forums into a forum about Minecraft! You probably think this is a joke for April Fool's day, but considering that Rare is a slowly dying company they've decided to legitimately change it to a fan-forum to support Notch and all of his endeavours. Notch is currently working on a new game and it will certainly be well programmed with lots of nifty graphics - but in the meantime we get to play his first creation: Minecraft!
Now, since you're looking at this topic I'm going to assume you've never heard of Minecraft and you're new to it's beautiful world. First of all: Welcome! :) If you haven't fooled around in the editor before buying your copy I'd recommend you do that first - get a feel for the world. The first thing you'll notice is that everything is blocks - that's right: blocks! Crazy, I know! This entire world is based on the concept of making everything out of blocks! It's not only great fun but it also brings us back to our childhood when we used to build things out of blocks. Mainly houses, sure, but here you can make practically anything out of blocks! If you want to make an entire castle made out of steel blocks then you can - the only limit is your imagination!
Once you've tried out the editor and if you're as in love with it as I am.... buy the game! It's extremely cheap for something of such high quality at only €14.95!
Now, assuming you've bought the game, you're going to want to start up a new game by clicking "Singleplayer'' and then "Create a New World". This is when the fun begins.
1. Birth!
Congratulations - It's a cube! You've just exited your mother's cervix and now you're here in your very own world. Every world is generated randomly so you'll never get the same world twice - that means no strategy guides, only exploring. You'll immediately notice all the various times of blocks surrounding you - there are a lot. Trust me. Now, what's fun about Minecraft is you can collect any block .... well almost any block - there are a few that are completely noncollectable unless you're in multiplayer and spawn the block, but we'll discuss those later.
To collect most blocks, such as the sand blocks which you're probably standing on right now, simply hold the left mouse button as you're facing it. Once the block gets destroyed, a small block will replace it. Walk on it and you'll collect it! Simple, huh?
You'll notice it goes into your inventory at the bottom of the screen. You can have up to 9 different blocks in your inventory, and 64 of each type of block. You also have a bigger inventory which you can keep more blocks in (Press "I" to see it). To shift through your various blocks you'll be collecting in your smaller inventory either click them or press 1 - 9 on your keyboard. This will come in very useful later on.
Now, you're probably wondering what you do with these blocks, huh? Well, face where you want to place a block and click the right mouse button - see what happens. It placed it there, didn't it?! :D Crazy, I know! You can stack any blocks on top of eachother - some even float in mid-air! (Hacks?! XD)
Seeing as you're well verse in the art of collecting and placing blocks by now - at least I'd hope - you're going to want to collect some of the most important block. See all those trees? Yeah, you're going to want to collect a lot of wood, my friend. Go up to a tree and take down as many blocks of wood as you can - then find some more and repeat; Don't worry about the leaves, unfortunately you can't collect those. If you do find little "saplings" fall out of the tree though make sure to pick those up! You can plant more trees with those and therefore get - you guessed it - more blocks of wood!
Once you've collected enough wood, press I to access your inventory, hold your left click button on the blocks of wood and drag them into the 2x2 grid. To the next of the grid you'll see new, fresh looking wood - click that until all the wood in the 2x2 is gone then drag your new wood into your inventory. Now you've got even more wood - and better looking wood, too!
2. I've Got Wood!
Now that you've got all this wood you're going to want to build a house. Well, more of a shack. If you look up you'll notice there is a square block of yellow that represents the sun, once that is gone it will be night time and that's when the scary monsters come. :x So to protect yourself you'll want a shack. Build a 6x6 hollow square - or if you have enough, a 8x8 hollow square - of wood, then build another one over it, then another, then another, and finally a 6x6/8x8 full square on top of the last hollow you made. Now punch out a 1x2 doorway at the bottom... and you've got your shack!
Since you're not a brave little toaster quite yet you'll probably want a door - don't want those pesky little monsters coming in while you're sleeping! Go into your inventory and put 1 block of fresh wood into each square in the 2x2 grid - congrats! You've created a building box. Place this inside or outside of your house and right click on it. Now you have a 3x3 grid to build in! Place 6 of the blocks in the grid like this:
WOOD - WOOD - BLANK
WOOD - WOOD - BLANK
WOOD - WOOD - BLANK
What did you produce? That's right! A door! Now put that door in your inventory and put it in the 1x2 hole you made and you've got your first shack. :)
3. Holy Shack!
Now that your shack is constructed you can adventure around until night time - check out the area, find some more blocks to collect, whatever you want! You're given a lot of time to explore on the first day so don't rush anything - take your time - but once that moon comes out get to your house pronto!
Now comes the boring part, unfortunately. You'll have to wait in your shack the whole night, listening to the sounds of scary monsters outside. Since you have no light you cant really explore under your shack or expand it just yet - that will have to wait until morning.
... Just kidding! That would be pretty boring, right? :P You actually have to battle monsters in this game - fun, right?! Your shack is more of a fortress for you to stay in when you're low on health, so don't spend alot of time in it unless you're either a total wuss or you don't have much health. Minecraft has a weird battle mechanic in that you have to spell "FIGHT" on your keyboard every time you want to attack. Test it out on a low level monster first - if you find any creatures that look tall and green those are really low level ones, so they're usually the best to try it out on. Simply go up to the monster and type the word "FIGHT" as fast as you can, over and over, until he dies. If you're quick enough he won't even land a single hit! Most monsters drop things, like zombies drop feathers and spiders sometimes drop string, but the low level green monsters - usually called "Creepers" - don't drop anything. They are fun to battle though and they're great for gaining experience!
4. And The Rest ... Is Up To You!
If you need more guidance, Google is your best bet, but the rest of the game is fairly easy and essentially the same thing. It doesn't have any clear objective except for surviving - but it is great fun! Kind of playing Legos, except with battling? Hehe, anyway! Have fun playing Minecraft and let us all know how your first experience with "The Craft" goes! o-O
