I'm thinking of getting a copy. I just learned it existed tonight. Has anyone seen it? Was it any good?
No spoilers, please.

I heard it was awful.

It's pretty good.
Also, they're making another one, based on Silent Hill 3.

Not gonna lie, the only reason I didn't like it was because I was a huge Silent Hill fan, and then after the movie, people I knew that finally got into the series kept asking "Where does this take place with the movie, where's Pyramid Head and in this other game why is his helmet different?" etc. Dumb reason looking back, but I could not stand it for a while. :p
It's a decent movie on its own. Picks and chooses a lot of elements from Silent Hill, and changes a load of back story. Instead of a bustling tourist site when you're not in another dimension, it's just a ghost town. I never thought it was that scary, though. Seemed to focus more on trying to disgust the viewer, but I'm looking forward to the sequel in hopes that'll change up a bit.

It did pretty good. Sure it wasn't totally faithful to the first game, and it fell into decisions that me being a fan of the games found dumb, like using pyramid head (seriously, it was a character that fit on the second game, stop putting it everywhere just because it's cool ffs!) but as a movie inspired by a game it was well made and succeeded at entertaining me.
@digimastermike Silent Hill is always referred as a touristic place by mouth or in regards to the past. Afaik in every game I played it was just as deserted and ghostly during the normal world. It's true that in the games no one seems to be half as worried or give any shit about being the only soul in town, while on the movie it was specifically stated that it was a ghost town.

I liked it. :P
Mostly based on the first game but with Pyramid Head because he's awesome and rapes things.

Beautiful film. Chilling. A thousand times better than anything you could ask from horror films these days.
And Purrmid Head was so studly! MMM!

Welp, that seals it. I picked up a copy of it and I'll be watching it tonight with a friend of mine. I'll post a review tomorrow.

it's not too good, in my opinion. too many changes to the original story (what is the point of changing the main character into a woman?) and just a bad movie. also I don't think it helps that I find the silent hill games to be all terrible.
Haven't seen it but wasn't it written by Roger Avary, he of Pulp Fiction/drunk-driving manslaughter fame?
fairly disappointing, given his record.

Why would you care about whether or not they stay true to the story of the game, if you don't even like the game to begin with?

Just finished watching it. Spoilers below.
It followed the games somewhat well, although it basically revealed every part of it during the middle and explained why they're there and such. It bothered me; Silent Hill isn't supposed to explain anything at all. The other part that bugged me is that the ending was left opened to interpretation. Her and her husband were still in "different worlds", yet it never says where she is, although it's pretty obvious that she got there from hitting her head off the steering wheel near the start, just as the cop did after crashing her bike.
Eh. Overall, the movie was pretty good. The effects were great and Pyramid Head was an utter badass (who else rips the skin off a chick and throws it at a church?), even though he didn't fit anywhere in the story or could be explained in any humanly way. :p

It's not really open to interpretation. She's dead.

it's a film based on the game. so that's kind of important.

It's not really open to interpretation. She's dead.
If she was dead, then they would have found her body in the car after she crashed. Instead her husband searched all of Silent Hill and found nothing, even after taking the same road that she crashed on.

Magic. :P
I dunno, probably just some alternate reality kind of thing. Who knows.

At first you're all "It isn't left opened to interpretation! This is what happened!", and then you're all "Who knows?". o-O

Well that's 'cause you had to go and shoot down my interpretation. :P
EDIT:
Ok, no, I'm pretty sure she's dead. I mean, she crashes and dies, and the cop lady crashes and dies. And all of those cult people are dead, because they died in the fire.

That makes a bit more sense. So if they were all dead, then where were they the entire movie? Some form of purgatory, perhaps even Hell? I doubt the cop would be sent to Hell, especially after saving that child that was thrown down the well for three days. Seeing as people "die", it's hard to say this is some sort of afterlife.
I'm thinking that when she hit her head in the car, she went into a coma. The rest of the movie takes place in her head, which would explain almost everything. The monsters and darkness are all embodiments of guilt, pain, distrust, and so on. Going off of that, her mind made up a "story" so it could have some sort of resolution and let her rest easily once the "story" was completed.
But my original point still stands: She crashed an SUV, and her husband took the same road as she did. They had to have saw the SUV, and her body inside of it.
Not to mention, this doesn't explain how the girl was brought to the orphanage in the first place. If she really was in a coma, then the "coma world" and the "real world" overlap when the demon takes her daughter to the orphanage.
Argh, my brain.

It wasn't in her head, that's for sure. Silent Hill actually does feed off of peoples' fears and guilts and such, so all of the monsters are courtesy of Silent Hill.
Which is where they were. Not Hell or Purgatory. Just... Silent Hill.

There's an evil cult, demonic monsters, and a possessed little girl, and you're worried about the implausibility of their spirits remaining in Silent Hill? :P
Madous
19th July 2011, 12:16 AM
No, it's the implausibility of "why the **** can't people find her crashed car and her body when her husband took the same damned road as she did." It's a gigantic plothole that I simply can't explain.
When I can explain the embodiment of evil and human emotions in the forum of monsters and cult following, but I can't explain why they didn't find a crash when she obviously crashed, I get a bit confused. :p

I've decided that I just can't wrap my head around this. I thought I had an explanation, but the movie decides to contradict everything I come up with. I give up. ;.;

Well, there aren't any problems like this in the games. (At least that I'm aware of)
Solution: play Silent Hill 2. Acquire nirvana.

19th July 2011, 02:58 AM
So was the movie based off of one of the games specifically?
Jinjonator
19th July 2011, 03:07 AM
As far as I know, it was based on 1, but very loosely. (I haven't gotten very far in SH1, so I couldn't really say as far as specifics, but the protagonist was a guy so...)
And then the new one next year will be based on SH3, and will actually have the character (Heather Mason).
Madous
19th July 2011, 03:16 AM
Awesome. Does it have a release date yet?
Jinjonator
19th July 2011, 03:18 AM
No, but according to the director, the movie is gonna be finished by the end of this year, so however long it takes to get a movie out after it's finished...

But I thought SH2 was supposedly the best?

Kinda makes sense to skip it I suppose, SH3 was more of the direct sequel after all. Though I do agree that the second was the best!
And greatman, you forgot to account for one thing: wildlife critters. You see, all the pieces fit when you take into account that raccoons and beavers devoured their bodies, and jacked their rides.

Oh yeah, forgot about those damned beavers that were stalking her throughout the entire opening of the movie. How could I forget?

Yeah, I always thought that the plot premise for SH2 is probably the best one I've ever seen on a game.
I think both SH2 and 3 are going to be revamped in HD and released for the 360 and ps3 soon. (they always ignore the first one for some reason) Probably a great chance for those that never played them and for those that did as well.

As a Silent Hill fan, I don't appreciate how they spliced bits from the first three games and didn't stay true to the games.
However, the visuals are stunning, and incredibly well done. Even if it's not 100% true to the original Silent Hill, it still tells a very interesting interpretation of the game, and makes for a terrific movie.
I love it and hate it at the same time.
