I keep having this error pop up on my computer. Apparently it particularly happens on Windows XP computers, which is what I still use. It's really strange because it'll come up periodically, as in it lasts for a few days, goes away for a while, and then comes back again later, rinse and repeat. It wouldn't really be much of a problem, really, except that it pretty much kills my sound whenever it happens. As soon as the error message comes up, the volume locks up to where I can't control it, and then eventually there's no sound at all so I have to restart my computer to get the sound back. Besides that, the only thing it does is make the bar with the start button look like the Windows 95/98 version of it, which is bizarre but not only an issue.

Now I've looked for help on the internet on how to fix it. Apparently, it's not a virus (thank God) but it's an error in Service Pack 2, I believe. The Microsoft website says to download security update 902400. So what I want to know is if anyone has had this problem before and knows if this is the best way to fix it, and if I download this update, will it affect my computer in a drastic way?

Any help with this would be much appreciated. :)

If I remember rightly this is an update problem, update XP and it should go away.

It went away for me when I updated to Service Pack 3, you should do the same.

You're using windows xp. You're soon to be doing it wrong
You're not using SP3? You're doing it wrong.

Don't even run xp without sp3. It is like using a condom made in the 80s.

Yeah, switching to 7 is a good idea if you really have six hours or so to backup, reinstall, restore, and reconfigure your machine. For some it is not even an option.
