I thought that I could make a topic where people can post deep philisophical questions with no answer what so ever or that have deep answers that take many para-graphs to write. Although I have a mind where simple questions are hard to answer but philosophy is my one strong point in life. The purpose of this topic is to have an intellligent discussion on deep philisophical questions. And yes, I am only in the middle school grade level. This is my question.

What is the meaning of life?

This question in a sense summarizes all questions. It is usually understood as: "What are the highest values, the Supreme Goals which I should try to achieve?". We stress that every human being must freely set those goals for himself or herself. The supreme goal which we choose derives logically from our cybernetic world view: to make a constructive contribution to the evolution of humanity, in order to maximize our long-term chances of survival (immortality). In essence, the meaning of life is to increase evolutionary fitness.

Please continue with great and deep philosophical questions with or wthout answers.

The meaning of life is to end. Otherwise on a grand scale it serves no other purpose. Every action taken and even effect produced on this planet is meaningless ultimately as it serves no final purpose. Even if the entire Earth were to be destroyed, every last human being eradicated, and life as we know it demolished from the galaxy...who cares? No one would be alive to mind it. The universe would continue to exist with or without a form of change and living.

Technically there is no end purpose for ANYTHING in the world. So instead the human mind goes off of the trait of happiness to try and fulfill itself with meaning and purpose. There is no better goal to achieve, no final product to alter. Your life, as all our lives, are minute, pointless, and not even worth a second thought.

The meaning of life is...... whatever you want it to be (or in the case of hitch hiker's guide to the galaxy it's really 42;))

Bah... I guess I'll give this philosophy thing a try...

What is the importance of meaning? Anything can have whatever meaning you want it to have. A poet can make it so that a rose means love or that rain represents sadness. A superstitious person can give an evil meaning to a cute black kitten that has done nothing wrong. It's like "bad" words. Are they really that bad or not? Are they evil or harmless? In the end words are just words and it is the thoughts of the people hearing them that gives them their meaning. It is in this same manner that life can have whatever meaning we give it, but you have to ask yourself, "What is the worth of a meaning that mere humans can give? Is meaning even important? How can there be one definite meaning for everyone when everyone thinks so differently?"

Humans constantly search for some sort of all encompassing meaning for our existence. It is the reason religion exists. People will do anything for something that gives them the illusion of meaning and promises a big payoff at the end. They like to feel "special" and "superior" in any way that they can. They don't like to believe that they are as worthless as the rocks in their yard. It's why people kill and die for what they believe in.

Is it really worth it though? Is there any real wrong way to believe? Is there any right way? A meaning is only meaningful to the person who believes in it. To all others it is pointless. We "know and believe" that the word "bird" means a feathered flying creature, but what about the people who don't speak our language and have no desire to learn it? Different individuals are on completely different wavelengths, so what is the point in believing in anything when no one person can be right? Not a single meaning or belief will bring peace and happiness to anyone, because there will always be someone else with a different belief willing to try and destroy our own beliefs whatever means necessary.

Meaning is not some tangible object that has a definite size, shape, and content. It is an abstract concept and yet people still try to give it specific form.

Now, wasn't that meaningless? ;)

Yes, but the only meanings are short term meaning thats have no end result. For example...

"A superstitious person can give an evil meaning to a cute black kitten that has done nothing wrong."

But that is short term. Even if the animal had been cursed, and really had killed you off, you were inevitably going to die, and while your death may effect the others around you, everything is heading towards the realm of final destruction anyway. In one point in time, everything IS going to end, so the only true meaning is short term self-induced meaning. Which afterward becomes obsolete to the inevitable end that no choice or decision can ever alter.

That was kind of the point. I was trying to illustrate just how worthless meaning really is due to the fact that two different people can perceive the same thing quite differently. A meaning is just something that gives an object or idea signifigance to an individual in their minds, and it really doesn't matter at all. Just like the person that sees the kitten to have the meaning of bad luck, many others try to see their meaningless lives as having some kind of grand purpose or reason when it doesn't. Probably a bad example. All the rhetorical questions I put probably ruined my point. Anyway, meaning is unimportant. Now I'm left with a meaningless desire for a cute black kitten :p

Bah... I hope my meaningless life ends before I get old... wrinkles and sagginess ick >_<

Yes, I know you were stateing the same thing. I was trying to play off what you had posted and expand on it covering it in a more general sense than the individual examples of personally meaning.

So, yeah, we're on the same page =). I think.

You're desire for a little black kitten has given me a desire for a little black kitten...hmm.

Wow, all you people and your long paragraphs and stuff...I'll give this philosicplaloisencecessitymawhatsit a go.

What is cheese? Is it really just a big yellow fluff of quick-to-age diary garbage, or has it really more purpose to our unpurposeful lives than anyone of us really cares to care about? Cheese can be interpereted to mean many things, such as the consumable dairy garbage or maybe even a command to smile before a camera. No one can really understand the slightest thing about cheese because we are all simple worthless uneducated worm-humans who have nothing better to do than pointlessly philophiziseicalmahowdoyouspellitblah about things that don't really matter, but overall really just hope to turn out sounding and looking like smart little geniuses to our colleagues/other forum members/cows. Aptitude. That is a cool word, though quite irrelevant. On the other hand, it may hold quite a large amount of relevancy to this speech for this speech no longer has a main topic, thus any real thing to take up space on this page may be welcomed as a relevant fact. Uh...what was this about? Oh right. Yes, cheese plays a much larger role in our lives, our universe, and our burgers for that matter than we really know. How do I know? I don't. I'm just philiophiziesinbfbsmsfing. To philiophicanfmendhamburgerkdemeeize you really do not have to know much, because in reality, are we not just stating that we know nothing when we philosipipszepipeize? Yes and no. Yes because we know nothing, and no because we do not know nothing. In conclusion, I would like a #4 meal, supersized, with a diet coke. Hold the onions.

Okay, how was that? :D :p :D :p I'm not very good. Oh well.
