Yes, but: gamers dont like change. We like the same controllers were used to, we like the same types of games were used to, we like the same systems were used to. Either the wii will become #3 like the gamecube, or it wont. Either way it dosent matter to me because im not buying one. And no, i dont hate nintendo, i just never play my gcn so theres no point in getting a wii.

So if gamers don't like change, why is the DS printing money?

Why were analogue sticks embraced after the SNES/Genesis?

Why is it that, at this year's Electronics Entertainment Exposition crowds of people surged past (http://youtube.com/watch?v=_Iaxqg-OFG8) the Sony (http://youtube.com/watch?v=mFQz98jAcg8) booth to cause record breaking lines at the Nintendo one?

If gamers didn't like change we'd still be playing Pong, "misguided" certainly seems accurate to me.

Either the wii will become #3 like the gamecube, or it won't.

Who would've thought.

Wth? Gamers (http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=2463) do (http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=2461) like (http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=2477) change (http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=2395).

You just got GREY JINJOWND! Anyway. Look at gaming history. What do you see?
It goes like this:
Trak Ball (Atari)
Joy Stick (Atari)
Various controllers like the steering wheel (I don't know who)
The NES controller (Nintendo)
N64 controller (Yes. Nintendo made the Analog stick. Not Sony. Live with it.)
The Wavebird (The 1st DECENT wireless controller. Not the 1st.)
The Wiimote (Nintendo.)
6 degree's of freedom (Was put into PC controllers YEARS before.)

Notice how Sony is not on the list. That is all.

I don't call disks errors in almost every game successful...

Except that list was all controllers XD.

I was talking about the advances in controller technowledgy. If I were to make a list for everything it would be ALOT less complete...

Now, now. If we're going into that, then we should mention blowing into every N64 cartridge. ;)

N64 controller (Yes. Nintendo made the Analog stick. Not Sony. Live with it.)

The psx came out one year before the 64 thus sony developed the analog stick.

Well, the PS3 might come out b4 the Wii, and according to your logic, then Sony invented the WiiMote (six degrees of freedom or whatever)

May I remind you of the actual original PlayStation controller, sans-analog stick?

http://www.retrogames.co.uk/stock/assets/images/Mach_-_Playstation_Controller_-_original.jpg

By the time Sony actually did add the dual analog sticks, they weren't on by default anyway, and most games just used the D-Pad by default, with the user having to make a consious decision to press a button to turn on the analog sticks.

Very convenient, thoughtful and innovative

No, just...no. (http://www.gamezero.com/team-0/articles/features/psx_opinion/controller.gif).

SEGA (http://www.geocities.com/rabidsmily/Hardware/Sega_Saturn/nIghts-controller.jpg) even had it before Sony did as did Nintendo. (http://media.arstechnica.com/staff/fatbits.media/n64-controller.jpg)

Also Nintendo didn't invent the analogue stick either, Atari did with the 5200 controller. (http://www.oldschoolgamer.ca/syspics/19-86.jpg)

Know your history kids! :approve:

Playstation. Released September 5th 1995
Nintendo. 199...6... But notice the high level of suckage in the controller for the Playstation. And after 11 years they still can't make a better controller. It's the same thing every system. And it doesn't work.

EDIT: Oh and the book I'm reading doesn't tell too much about it. I don't think they even mentiond any Atari Console other than the VCS (2600 for people who don't know.)

But they have the same sort of design and idea as a joystick, so game developers may have gotten the idea from that.

this topic should be moved to misc gaming board .

on topic: I like the n64 controller best out of all the analog stick controllers , It really doesn't matter to me who invented it but who made it work the best, To me Nintendo did the best job.

You don't get it, they didn't release the Dual-Shock until after the N64 was out.

Sega Saturn and Megadrive's 6 button Joypads = Best Controllers Ever

Oh yes they are rather nice, however the Saturns first controller is pretty bad. XP

Actually, the japanese Saturn controllers are improved versions of the old 6 button genesis/megadrive controller.

But for some reason Sega decided to make a new controller design for Europe and America, and they ended making a really BAD choice.

For those of you who don't know, after a short period of time they ditched the european/american designs in favor of the original japanese one.
Hakey alredy knew this, that's why he said "the first cotroller is pretty bad", because they made a worldwide re-release of the japanese design as the standard controllers.

In summary:
Saturn's first controller design = American/European lame design.
but it was so bad they quickly cancelled production.
Sega Saturn second controller design = Re-release of the original japanese version.

PS: Sorry about the bad wording in this post

Yeah I got a EurAmerica controller after my Saturn had already come with a JAP one. Trying to use the L/R buttons on Street Fighter Alpha is just...words do not describe the anguish..>.<

As far as I know, they're called joysticks. You might be thinking of a yoke, which looks like a steering wheel.

I'm guessing everyone forgets the good 'ol Vectrex? Had the analog stick before Nintendo ever had it on the N64. The Vectrex was released in 1982, years before the N64.

Go look it up the Wikipedia if you don't believe me.

so they did, plus dont forget atari's other analouge controller from the nes generation

but my fave controller of all time.....

Hakey Wake

The ATARI 7800 didn't have an analogue stick though, it had an eight-way digital joystick (effectively a disk sitting atop a d-pad) much like the NES MAX controller. (http://nes.kreese.com/grafik/tillbehor/nesmax.jpg)

I'm also rather curious to know if the Vectrex actually had any games that required the use of analogue control or no..

This (http://www.steelbattalion.org/sideBySide.jpg) (I have the green one) is my favourite controller out of all the periphery I have anyway, it makes me feel big.

This thread is retarded...

Stop confusing analog sticks with joysticks. And even if there was a pre-N64 console that had something resembling an analog stick, the N64 was the console to make analog sticks a standard for all controllers. But I thought that this thread was about how change is so bad. Which is ridiculous. Even if the OP doesn't like change doesn't mean every gamer hates change. And let's face it-change has happened, it will continue to happen, and it can be very beneficial to the game industry.
