October 20, 2006 - The Halo movie hit a snag today as both studios financing the project dropped out! Rumors are swirling that 20th Century Fox and Universal were freaked out over a rising $135 million budget, but producers Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh are claiming that the studios bolted after filmmakers and Microsoft refused to have their share of the profit cut.

Walsh and Jackson's rep, Ken Kamins, spoke to industry mag Variety and explained, "What happened was this: Universal, on behalf of both studios, asked for a meeting with the filmmakers just prior to the due date of a significant payment. Basically, they said that in order to move forward with the film, the filmmakers had to significantly reduce their deals. They waited until the last minute to have this conversation. Peter and Fran, after speaking with their producing partners and with Microsoft and Bungie (the studio that designed the original game), respectfully declined."

Microsoft would have received the majority of a $5 million upfront payday on October 15th, in addition to later profit participation of 10%.

Kamins says that rumors of a $200 million budget aren't true. He added that the only numbers put out there by the filmmakers were "$145 million less the 12.5% rebate that you get from shooting in New Zealand, which would put it at about $128 million."

So what does all this mean for the possibility of a Halo movie? The filmmakers and Microsoft seem undeterred. In fact, Kamins says that Microsoft is already in talks with other studios that may distribute the film based on the blockbuster gaming title. And with pre-production continuing at Jackson's Weta Workshop, the studio financing problem could be a mere speed bump on the road to making the Halo movie a reality.

And what of the status of attached first-time feature director Neal Blomkamp? "Everybody is supremely confident in Neal," Kamins told Variety. "Part of what excited Peter and Fran was Neal's vision. We're very confident this film will move forward with the creative partners intact, who will take the film to production."

Bah. Doesn't surprise me, unfortunately. I would like to have seen it released sooner than it inevitably will be now.

Meh. Screw the studios.

Just as long as Peter Jackson is still around... Halo's in good hands :)

At least the movie's still set to go, right? I'm rather curious is to how everything's going to work out. Because such a high-regarded director like Peter Jackson is attached, Halo has promise for a video game/movie crossover. :)

Halo I find pointless.

I guess it can be a fun game. But I can compare it with My Space. That's the problem.

This may come as a surprise to you, but you can play against anyone on the world on any online game. Doesn't make it like MySpace.

If the above doesn't make sense, that's probably because it didn't make sense to me. Comparing Halo to MySpace? Odd.

October 27, 2006 - Despite recent drama surrounding the planned big-screen adaptation of Halo, Microsoft is still determined to make the movie a reality. After Fox and Universal, the two studios that had been co-financing the flick, dropped out earlier this week, Microsoft has begun shopping it around.

According to today's Variety, Microsoft is focusing their partnering efforts on Warner Bros. and Paramount, partially due to complex relational issues with the other major studios. Sony is out because of the PlayStation. Disney is iffy due to Apple's Steve Jobs involvement. And New Line is still working through legal problems related to LOTR with Halo producers Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh. The level of interest that Warners and Paramount have shown in the project is unclear.

As the trade speculates, it would also make sense for Microsoft to go it alone. Money isn't an issue and they could rent distribution services. That's a high risk scenario, but with a better potential payoff. And they might also go after private financing.

While all this wrangling is going on in the background, the film itself is moving ahead. The original script by Alex Garland (28 Days Later) has been rewritten by Ender's Game screenwriter D.B. Weiss and will reportedly get another rewrite by Josh Olsen, scribe of A History of Violence.

We'll have more Halo movie news here on IGN as it develops.
