View Full Version : Nintendo's Most Recent Flops!

While I'm a huge fan of Nintendo I found a few of the following things that Nintendo has decided to do have been hilarious. These are all recent, most of them have to do with E3. Here's a list of what I've come up with so far:
1. Nintendo Gamecube: $99
Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicles: $50
4 GBA SP's: $400
4 GBA to GC link cables: $60
*Finding three other human beings that live within driving distance and are willing to play Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicles on their GBA SP's with you... : HOPELESS
There are somethings money can't buy, this is one of them.
2. Did you like playing the SNES Zelda game on your GBA? How about playing that totally cool and remixed version of the first metroid game? Where you one of the idiots that went out and bought another gamecube just to find out that the Zelda bonus disk had games you already played when you were like four years old! Well, if that wasn't cool enough for you, now you can buy the original Mario, Zelda, DK, and Metroid for $20. And this time it's on a GBA cartridge! A GBA CARTRIDGE!
3. PSP announces that it will release DVD's on the PSP's mini-disk. In response to this, Nintendo apparently raced against the clock to release videos for the GBA cartridges. Now if you really want to look gay at school, hop onto the bus in the morning with a complementary pair of Nintendo headphones. While you're pimping with your GBA SP in hand, completely gay shows such as Jimmy Neutron, Rugrats, and Dora the Explorer!
4. After the Zelda series lost half of it's fans due to the fact that Wind Waker looked like the queerest game since Iggy's Reckin' Balls. Mr. Miyamoto used his genius brain to figure out that perhaps if he had released this cool looking Zelda first. Maybe, just maybe, more people would become interested in the Zelda series.
5. Did we not already get enough ports on the GBA? If not, now you can play Mario 64 on your Nintendo DS! And the catch is, this time you can play with 3 other players!
6. Don't get me wrong Metroid Prime was a great game. The problem is the one they're releasing for DS and GC both have the exact same graphic look as Metriod Prime. And this time there's actually supposed to be a story in the game. And I don't mean scanning little Chozo archives. Yeah, and get this. You can play multiplayer on the GC one! Yeah, have fun with Samus's vast array of 5 different weapons! You can also attack people by rolling around in a little ball! Just like Iggy's Reckin Balls! HOW EXTREMELY GAY!
Well, it's late and I can't remember some other ones I was going to put. However, I am very impressed with the DS besides that Mario 64 x 4 game. It has voice recognition and touch screen capabilities. Wouldn't it be awesome to lock people out of your DS because it can recognize your fingerprints and your voice? And two screens is definetly cool. Think of the advantages you it gives you: Not having to pause the game a thousand times in Ocarina of Time's Water Temple just to switch your iron and kokiri boots. And that's just one to name!

I think I speak for the majority here when I proclaim that you're an idiot.
Oh and also, I really don't see how anything videogame related can determine somebody's sexuality.....but whatever.

Well, when I got my GBA SP, I developed a profound lust for its beauty. We're now engaged, and having a summer wedding. I can't wait to hear the pitter-patter of tiny GBA human-cartridge mutants :)

1. I agree with you that connecting your game boy to your gamecube is a little stupid, but I kinda like my gamecube and game boy advance SP...and I'm a big fan of all Final Fantasy games, so I gotta disagree with you on the others.
2. I like the nostalgic vibes I get from the games, and I can tote my GBA anywhere. That's kinda hard to do with the SNES and NES.
3. I totally agree that it's rediculous to create video cartridges for the GBA. Personally, I think that Miyamoto should consider creating something beyond DVD and Video, maybe some sort of super-video simulator?
4. There's a realistic Zelda coming out in the near future, so don't complain.
5. I find the four character gameplay an interesting twist in classic. I'm very intrigued and am going to buy it ASAP.
6. I believe that they are putting the lookalike on DS so people can take it everywhere with them. And I liked the multi-player mode...
And please don't hate on the DS...give it a chance, it's brand new.

Look, I personally think that you were shallow minded in your post.
1. Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles' multiplayer mode is more for friend that own GBAs and cables. If you have a Cube, a GBA, the game, and the cable- then just have your friends bring their cables and GBAs. If they don't have any tell them that they are poor bastards. (Just kidding) Although I agree that the multiplayer mode could have been done without the connectivity, it would have been a different experience. Besides, it's better then no multiplayer mode.
2. 2a- Legend of Zelda: Four Swords is a totally awesome and unique experience. I have played it, and it's worth buying.
2b- Er, what "totally new and remixed version of the first metroid game"? (Just a question...)
2c- If you went out a bought a new Gamecube for the disc and didn't even check what was on it, then you truly are an idiot.
2d- Those GBA Retro games are aimed at those who either have never played those games or those who loved them, but don't have an NES.
3- GBA Video is aimed at younger children, not teenagers like us. Not everything Nintendo does should be aimed at teens and adults. Also, GBA Video was annouced befored Sony annouced DVD capabilities for the Playstation Portable. And it was released BEFORE E3 and the Sony press conference.
4- Maybe you could learn with your genius brain, not to judge a game due to graphics.
5,6- Do not infer that a game is a rehash or a bad game before it's out or even finished.

Precisely. There are too many people who disliked Wind Waker for its graphics. And while everyone is entitled to their opinion, I've only seen one person (http://www.rarewitchproject.com/forums/member.php?u=16) so far who actually has a reasonable opinion against the game.
Some people just need to shut up and be more like Grey ;)

While Nintendo has made many mistakes and some of which they still are, I disagree with everything you said Professor X. For your first point regarding Final Fantasy, I hardly doubt a group of four people who didn't own anything of the above, that they would spend that much on a particular title. Most people that are devoted FF fans would own at least a portion of what's needed to play. GBA SP's are not $100 each either... As far as I know they are $80 each. Considering the above with those factors out of the way, I feel the price is within reason.
As for number 2, the Classic NES Series is another way of playing some of the best games around. While yes, they are the same games rehashed, now they are in portible form and in a Collector's Series. As cheap as they are, I don't think Nintendo is foolhardy in selling these games again. They are sure to garner in some sales, and in Japan they have already seen good results.
Third, the GBA Video is clearly aimed at a completely different audience than your age group. All of the shows that are to be sold are children's programs. I believe the goal of the GBA Video is to capture the sales of a group that Sony is void of -- KIDS.
Fourth, in my personal experience, the Wind Waker is the first Zelda game I've actually bought and played end to end. I prefer it to the Ocarina of Time. IMO it is the best in the series, and it goes to show who are the true Zelda fans. The graphical style of the game shouldn't be the main factor in choosing it.
Fifth, Super Mario 64 X 4 is a new and different approach to a classic game that hasn't seen the light of day in over 8 years. With new and innovating gameplay design and tactics, and a multiplayer mode, the game is actually completely revamped when you think about it.
Lastly, the new Metroid DS game is something that will surely change by the time its done. The current Metroid Prime format is popular, and I think I stand by a majority of people who wouldn't mind using a familiar schematic.

And that's a bad thing........ how?
Incase you hadn't noticed, Metroid Prime's Graphics were some of the best to grace the Cube.
So really you complain about bad graphics in TWW..... ad complain about GOOD ones in Prime.... there's no satisfying you eh?

I disagree. Thre are some people who would like to play these games again and are willing to pay the $20. I don't think they're idiots. (I'm not one of them though.)
3. PSP announces that it will release DVD's on the PSP's mini-disk. In response to this, Nintendo apparently raced against the clock to release videos for the GBA cartridges. The GBA video WAS NOT made to compete with the PSP's DVD feature, it was also announced long before the PSP announced DVD compatibilty. GBA Video is targeted toward children. And there are some adults who like watching Jimmy Neutron... I've seem it.
Approx. 700,000 preordered The Winder Waker, the first 1.1 million copies shipped sould in a snap, and the Winder Waker made the GameCube's hardware sales jump 20%!
5. Did we not already get enough ports on the GBA? If not, now you can play Mario 64 on your Nintendo DS! And the catch is, this time you can play with 3 other players!
Firstly, the Mario 64 for the DS is not a port. A posrt is a direct copy of a game for a different system. Becuase Mario 64x4 has improved graphics and a multiplayer feature it is not a port. I for one and looking forward to this game.
6. Don't get me wrong Metroid Prime was a great game. The problem is the one they're releasing for DS and GC both have the exact same graphic look as Metriod Prime. Of course they'll have the same graphics...They're sequals! They want people to regonize the game at first glace. You know, there are some people who just go to s store and look at a game without researching it in a magazine or on the internet.

There are somethings money can't buy, this is one of them.
I have to agree, having to buy 5 consoles just for a multiplayer experience in the game is murder. We're normal people, not Bill Gates clones.
I don't see what's wrong with that, considering how I enjoyed Sonic Mega Collection more than Sonic Adventure DX, 2 Battle or Heroes, and prefer the SNES and NES Mario games more than the recent ones, I say it's a good idea to remake/rerelease them. As long as the remake is good, the Super Mario Advance games only seem to have minor extras, voices, a Mario Bros game and recoloured graphics.
Doesn't faze me really, I prefer having my television to watch movies and shows, my radio to listen to music, my phone to contact people, etc. Also, I've seen that the quality is absolutely awful, so meh.
I have to admit that the Wind Waker's appearance did put me off (I prefer graphics that fit the game's setting, like detailed graphics for a serious game, cartoony for not-so-serious, etc), but it does seem good though, despite the fact that I only played it at a friend's house.
5. Did we not already get enough ports on the GBA? If not, now you can play Mario 64 on your Nintendo DS! And the catch is, this time you can play with 3 other players!
As said earlier, as long as the remake is good then I'm happy. I longed to have someone help out in Super Mario 64 (I did spend my childhood playing Mario and Sonic games helping out my brother as Player 2 afterall), so this pleases me. Ports, however, are getting too numerous, I want a port of a rare or Japan-only game, not a game that everyone and their grandparents bought back then!
Just because the graphics are the same doesn't mean it should stop you from buying it. The first six Megaman games had the exact same graphics, I'm surprised you're not complaining about that. However, I guess it would get a bit tiring fighting recoloured Samuses with that little weapons, but there's probably pickups or something.
And that's just one to name!
Personally, I haven't thought of too much that could be done with the DS's second screen. There could be your map, your inventory, status screen, where your opponent is (like in Spy vs Spy), a touchscreen and highscore screen. That's it really. Maybe I'm just not a fan of handheld consoles, but personally I think that if a game doesn't use the second screen, why not have it for Gamecube and N5 so it can be more improved? New Super Mario Bros just has a little black screen with text and stars at the bottom, and isn't needed for the game, so it could be on the Gamecube with more features. Then again, you'd have to lug your Gamecube, TV, controller, memory card and a place to plug it in everywhere, so that would be annoying for travelling people. Me? I'm a lazy oaf, and don't go to many places, so it doesn't faze me, as long as the DS can connect up to the Gamecube or N5.

I don't completely agree with Professor X on some things but I think there is far too much bashing going on here =P. I mean it is an opinion and to be honest a lot of it isn't too far off...
1. Nintendo Gamecube: $99
Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicles: $50
4 GBA SP's: $400
4 GBA to GC link cables: $60
*Finding three other human beings that live within driving distance and are willing to play Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicles on their GBA SP's with you... : HOPELESS
True, kind of. The multiplayer feature is to some extent a luxury feature. It is like hooking up 4 X-box's on 4 TV's for 16 player action. Sure, that’s bull, who can actually do that? But it HAS been done on NUMEROUS occasions. Somewhere out there there ARE groups of people that DO meet together for stuff like this. Sure, maybe not in my area or your area, but they exist.
Plus, people have complained and begged for multiplayer versions of many popular square games before and rarely ever actually get one. If Crystal Chronicles DIDN'T have multiplayer then people would be ragging on them for that. This way at least it is there and they can say "If you want it, use it, if you don't, don't."
2a. Well, I admit a lot of the imported SNES games were unnecessary but the Metroid one wasn't AS bad as it was truly COMPLETELY redone. The graphics were updated to a GBA level and the rooms and enemies and everything were entirely redesigned. All in all it was nicely revamped and worth at least trying. Had it just been a direct port though, I wouldn't have touched it.
2b. Yeah... but some people just "have to play it on their gamecube!". I don't know I didn't understand that port either to be honest. GBA ports are to take your games on the go....wth are the GCN ports for? But all in all it did make life easier. Think about it. You could A) Play all the games on your GCN or B) Go to your NES, put in Zelda, when you're done go to your SNES, play that, insert your N64 cartridge...a somewhat annoying and tedious process. Although buying an entire nother GCN for it is retarded, you'd be better off making friends with ebay if possible.
2c. I don't like the ports either, at all. Then again that is mostly due in part to my lack of need for portable gameplay. I bought the player to play my gameboy games on the big screen, I'm definitely not working on shrinking my games down. However, this is another luxury case. You don't HAVE to buy the games if you don't want to. However there are MILLIONS of people in the world that have the money to burn 20$ on the gameset and be able to take it with them. In reality it is no different than something else. You don't NEED a portable DVD player you can watch them all at home...but being able to watch them in a car is a special luxury you CAN have if you want.
Yes, video on cartridge = lame. Especially with the amazing graphic capabilities of GBA SP -_-. But in reality, they already have separate cartridge playing devices on the market. If you already own a GBA SP it eliminates having to get one of those! So theoretically instead of a GamePlayer/DVD Player you're getting a GamePlayer/ClipPlayer (er, or whatever those things are called). Nothing you need, but like I said it eliminates having to take two portable products and having a big mess.
I've already voiced my opinion on this game....hell, the entire series numerous times so I'll save that and just comment on what you said. No, graphics aren't entirely important, no, you shouldn't rely solely on if Zelda looks homosexual or not....but you KNOW you shouldn't because you're the hardcore game players of the world. Just being here and discussing these things and even knowing about them separates you for the typical game players. On the other hand there are over a million people with a GCN and no concept of gaming. So yes, they ARE shallow and uninformed, and yes they ARE going to go by if Zelda looks badass or like a gay little elf. So marketing wise, no, it was NOT a wise decision because wrong or right there ARE a lot of people out there like that.
That is the sole concept behind most of the sports games that sale. I've picked up a few and I have no problem saying that their game engines sucked, and the ones that were good were almost identical from game to game in the series and not worth playing the sequel. But again, with over a million people who don't know or don't care they can sell it.
5. Did we not already get enough ports on the GBA? If not, now you can play Mario 64 on your Nintendo DS! And the catch is, this time you can play with 3 other players!
...Yes in my opinion that was NOT a multiplayer game. I won't count it out yet as I haven't gotten time to fairly sample it and see myself but I just played it for a refresher and I think having multiplayer in it would be...unnecessarily retarded?
The only thing the DS is going to give way for is tons of N64 ports instead of SNES ports. Which hey, if you want to take N64 games with you by all means go ahead. It just doesn't happen to be my thing.
Yeah I have the same hype for this multiplayer as I did for SA2: Battle's. IMO Samus moves too smooth and refined to have a shooting multiplayer. Unless they make her much faster I don't see much enjoyment out of this either. Also with her infinite ammo, starting off with every gun thing, and much more...eh I don't know. But hey, I didn't try it yet so they could have some sort of ingenious engine implemented to blow us all away who knows. I'll try it.
And two screens is definitely cool. Think of the advantages you it gives you: Not having to pause the game a thousand times in Ocarina of Time's Water Temple just to switch your iron and kokiri boots. And that's just one to name!
Personally, I see the second screen as somewhat useful for one reason - it is a clutter reliever. The portable game systems screens are just too freakin small. On a large screen, having health in the corner with ammo in the other and a radar is perfectly fine. On a little screen it takes up half the playing area! This is a way to give you the entirety of what little space is available to you, and for THAT I like it. I’m not saying I particularly like the DS as IMO it is still outdated to the PSP, but I do particularly enjoy the clean look it presents which is lacking in the normal GBA and may actually be one of the factors in to why I DON’T like using the GBA itself.

Oh and also, whilst i'm here, whoever said that the PSP plays dvd's is horribly mis-informed, it used UMD format and I highly doubt many companies will be vying to produce their films on yet *another* medium. Same for CD's too, why pay for the same music in a different medium *just* to listen to it via psp when you could use your cd player anyway?
Not to mention the battery life of the PSP is only about 2.5 hours for games as it is.......

I definitely agree. who owns a gc anyways at your age, even less probably a gba sp. I doubt there are lot of kids or adults or teens in your neighberhood that play video games. Most own a ps2 i bet. If they are like 5-12 all of your friends own gc! after 13 when you like ff or at least understand it you dont like the gay kiddie gc! You and your friends now own a useless gc that you aren't gonna use much any more. You ask your parents to buy you an xbox or ps2. Heck none of my friends own gc. they all own xbox or ps2. gba little more popular. there. okay i said a little more than i expected so i aint gonna say anything more to offend you little kids taht played gc this afternoon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2. Did you like playing the SNES Zelda game on your GBA? How about playing that totally cool and remixed version of the first metroid game? it aint that bad. i think it isn't worth 20$. all for should just come with your gba i suggest. i would buy it mayb for $10 but that is it. i aint gonna spend 20 bucks just for some bad graphich game.
While you're pimping with your GBA SP in hand, completely gay shows such as Jimmy Neutron, Rugrats, and Dora the Explorer!
basically what everyone else replyed to this one. i do think it is for kids. i could give one of these to my cousin and he would watch it all the time.
Since i dont have a gc i really cant judge this game. But I really have to after taking a glance at what they did from ocarina of time and majora's mask into this. i agree with professor, but you should play it, it will change your prospective i bet.
5. Did we not already get enough ports on the GBA? If not, now you can play Mario 64 on your Nintendo DS! And the catch is, this time you can play with 3 other players!
I agree i dont even like mario 64 too much anyways.
This game did look cool. I never played it i dont have a gc. i just cant imagine putting one of the best games ever into 3d? the ball thing does look extremely gay.
OMG THEY ARE DOING REMAKES :) not. how idiotic.

Um.... i'm 16 and along with my Cube, 9 of my friends each have their own 'Cubes, 5 have PS2's and nobody has an XBox.
Guess that makes the XBox 'gay' and kiddy doesn't it?

It seems to me to be the less serious gamer has a Sony console while the more hardcore gamer have gamecubes or X box's.

All the gamers who I 16+ and that I know have a gamecube.
And please let's stop referring to things as gay. Your making yourself look silly.
Personally, I like Nintendo consoles but that's only because there the only sytems I've ever actually had access to.

A GBA CARTRIDGE!2a. Actually, I liked playing the SNES Zelda on GBA. Yeah, the voice clips can get annoying at times, but it's still great to be able to play one of the greatest Zeldas of all time on the road.
2b. If you bought a new gamecube just to get the bonus disc without looking to see what was on it, well... That wasn't smart. A better deal would have been to register two of your games on Nintendo.com so you could get the disc free. And just because the games are old doesn't mean they're bad. I appreciate that I no longer have to blow on the edge connectors of my Zelda cart 100 times before it will work.
2c. What's wrong with putting old NES games on GBA cartridges? Yes, maybe the price should have been lower, and it might have been better had they decided to put more then one game on a cart. But I'm definitely getting Zelda.
3. PSP announces that it will release DVD's on the PSP's mini-disk. In response to this, Nintendo apparently raced against the clock to release videos for the GBA cartridges. While you're pimping with your GBA SP in hand, completely gay shows such as Jimmy Neutron, Rugrats, and Dora the Explorer!3. PSP will not be playing real DVDs. It has the ability to play them if they're put on they're UMDs, which I doubt many DVD companies will want to do. The GBA video carts were released before the PSP announced that it could play DVDs on its UMDs. Yes, the shows are directed towards little kids. No one said you had to buy them.

Mr. Miyamoto used his genius brain to figure out that perhaps if he had released this cool looking Zelda first. Maybe, just maybe, more people would become interested in the Zelda series.
4. Judging a game by graphics is mistake that too many people make. Real Gamers know better than that. The Wind Waker's graphic style actually allows for the characters to show more emotion, and they sort of go with the fantasy theme of Zelda. Cel-shading is perfect for games like Zelda. I'm actually not too keen on the more realistic Zelda they're making, I don't think Zelda should be realistic. But I'll buy it anyway 'cause I love Zelda.
5. Did we not already get enough ports on the GBA? If not, now you can play Mario 64 on your Nintendo DS! And the catch is, this time you can play with 3 other players!5. By making these ports Nintendo's just trying to give people a chance to play the games they couldn't during the first run. Mario 64 was a very good game actually, and challenging too. I only recently got all 120 stars, and I've had the game since it came out. I admit I'm not sure how this whole multiplayer thing might work, but I'll just have to wait until it's out for that.

You're right about the two screens, not having to pause to switch items is cool. Plus you can view a map on the second screen instead of trying to cram it into one screen.
(I didn't comment on 1 or 6 'cause I don't have FF:CC or Metroid, so I can't judge)

Ok, but again, the average gamer ISN'T a real game. The average gamer DOESN'T know better than that. Marketting wise, it was a VERY bad move because only the hardcore gamists (is gamists a word?) would look passed the fact that Link was a little cartoon before playing it. The zelda series might have sold well, but it probably would have sold EVEN BETTER had they made him his dark old self, and thats just reality.
Also, just because we CAN look passed the graphics of a game doesn't mean we HAVE to everytime does it? Just because I am more keen on gameplay should they make no effort whatsoever to please me visually as well? As long as their game engine is alright should they not give a damn about how their gamers think it looks? I mean I know The Wind Waker wasn't...too horrid I guess... if you looked passed the graphics, but at the same time the company opted to ignore a 7 digit amount of a fans who disliked the idea. I mean, I know they kept a decent game engine running, but they didn't even seem to take the demand of their fanbase that BUYS their games in to consideration.
All these companies have the power to make their games smooth and nicely textured instead of just rushing them out, but as long as they have a decent game engine, screw making it look pretty for the real gamers?

My opinion keeps changing on the wind wakers graphics (now that I could finally be bothered to finish the thing.) Having got heavily into replaying the 2nd disc on wind waker (OoT) I've decided that the realistic graphics are much better. Most real gamers and casual gamers prefer the realistic graphics. Marketing wise (not that i'm an expert) realistic is definately the way to go. Adult gamers don't feel like they're playing a disney cartoon, kid gamers would have liked realistic too. When I was a pre teen I think I would have preferred playing a more realistic game than a cartoon style cel shaded game. Everyone's happy, zelda is even more popular.
Luckily I don't really mind the cel shaded graphics, they didn't grate paticularly and I thought the king of red lions (or whatever the heck his name was) was quite good.

I was just trying to make a point that graphics shouldn't be the only factor people judge. I admit you're right, Zelda would have sold better had they released the realistic one first. I guess you're right, if Nintendo wants to sell than they have to give what the fanbase wants, which is graphics. I see your point, Grey.
