Where the Light don't Shine

First of all, I'd like to make it clear that I have no intention of ever continuing this story, making more chapters, etc. I only did this because I got bored. Now, enjoy my storm of cliches

-----

Black.

Everything was black.

Street lanterns had ceased working and not even the slightest hint of light came from the pub where it had been so lively just the day before. Complete silence surrounding the streets in which only a lone man could be seen standing. Not a single soul was out there that day, not even the tiniest of street animals, or the birds that used to sing so cheerfully as the morning rose. The moon, which reflected the sun's light so firmly for the past centuries had gone as dark as a black cat after spending weeks on a sunbed.

The man had layered himself in clothes against the cold breezes that would freeze over even the thickest of polar bears if they stayed outside. The sun stopped emitting sunlight only one hour earlier, and the results were already horribly noticeable. Looking up, the man gazed at a still burning sun. A mere still image of what the sun had been like prior to today. Scientists said that it was still appearing to be burning into the sky because the moment the sunlight stopped reaching the earth, the ability to observe changes from the sun stopped as well. It looked as though it was still burning bright, yet it was stuck in place, not ever moving again, reminding us of how the world used to be, and how it suddenly changed.

Temperatures were falling quickly to temperatures to which most humans weren't accustomed to. The everyday business came to a halt, burglars stopped stealing and politicians stopped bickering. This may have been the first time since the existence of mankind that everyone was brought to unison when the sudden darkness was all that mattered anymore. Electricity stopped working the moment that everyone in the entire world tried to turn on lighting the moment it suddenly went pitch-black. Stories went that North Korea still provided their own electricity, but there was no one to confirm if the rumors were true. And even then, the power source wouldn't last, and eventually, North Korea would end up joining the rest of the world in a situation that no one accounted for.

As the man's eyes slowly adapted to the impending darkness around him, he could finally start to make out shapes. He was on the ground, head looking up at the sky which was illuminated by stars and the last remaining image of the sun that would keep on haunting them forever. Slowly standing up, he noticed he was next to a wrecked car, airbag deployed. The car had been in an accident with a whole lot of other cars. A chain collision of proportions that he had never witnessed before. It was his car that he was facing. A car that he had been riding up until the moment that the lights suddenly went out. Looking around him, he saw other people. Some knocked out of their vehicles like he had been, some stuck inside the cage that was meant to transport people from one place to another.

Turning his head to the right, the man was greeted with a big amount of pain. It felt like millions of glass shards had been embedded inside his neck and tore open his skin with every movement he tried to make. After his pain settled a little, he could make out the shape of a kid. It was standing there, wrapped up in the same amount of layers of clothes that everyone else appeared to be. Upon seeing the clothes, the man recalled how this blackout had been predicted. Everyone had been asked to dress up like they would take a walk on the south pole whereas yesterday the sun still appeared to shine with high temperatures in an overall sunny summer. It was freezing cold, in mid-July.

The man tried to walk towards the boy, but was greeted with a new form of pain for every piece of his body that he moved around. The man tried to ask the kid if it was okay, but couldn't get a word out of his mouth. He tried to speak again, but there was nothing but silence. It was as though the sun didn't just take the earth's sunlight and made a run for it, it also took its sound. The kid raised her finger towards her closed lips as though she was trying to tell the man to keep quiet.

Slowly but surely, people around the two started waking up, every one of them a bit more surprised at the situation they found themselves in than the other. There were also those who died from the car crash. Their bodies, simply not moving, appeared to be more peaceful than any of those still being alive. At least these men didn't have to live through the hell that had overtaken the earth. This hell, however, wasn't made out of an abundance of fire, red lights and damnation. This hell only offered the damnation combined with a breeze that would turn penguins into popsicles and the local living statue into an ice sculpture. Was this the end of times that everyone had been talking about, Or was this just the beginning?
