Comparing platforming to platforming!? Gasp!
Edit: Would you prefer if we used Crash Bandicoot?

You people are comparing him to "mmmm... like MK is like a spin off, is totally fine, why cant Rare afford to do that?"

A better comparison would be Ratchet and Clank I think. People cried foul when Ratchet Deadlocked came out, but not like this. They just played the old trilogy.

Being someone who never played N&B, I'd gladly give it a chance. But I can see why Banjo Purists would be upset. I mean, they changed the kind of game the series would be.
Like, obviously, the first bunch of Banjo games (Kazooie, Tooie, Grunty's Revenge) were games built around collecting stuff. The second you make a game (that isn't even a spin-off, by the way) that changes the formula, then bam. I can see why people would be upset over that. Now, the point Jim makes in his video seems to be "Yeah. If it's good, why should we care?" in the context of a spin-off. Which I 100% agree with. First example I can think of is Jak and Daxter. Does anyone remember Jak X, which I believe was a racing game? I never actually played it, but that's what it was being marketed as, from what I remember. Cool. Spin-off game. Brilliant. I also want to bring up that sometimes changing the formula does wonders for the series. I mean, like, Metroid comes to mind. Y'know, like when this became this. I suppose you could argue that it's a new series entirely, but my point might still stand under a certain premise. I know that was mostly rambling, but my point is. I agree with Jim 100%. Spin-offs have the liberty to be whatever they want. Core titles that drive a series forward should remain the same formula, on a side note.

I thought Jak X was canon though. That's why it's generally not well liked.

Not even that, R&C had a game on the last gen. It is midly relevant.

Alright you seem to missing the point I'm trying to make with Mario Kart without Mario. What if it was Perfect Dark: Nuts & Bolts? How about Kameo: Elements of Power Off Road? These are other established Rare franchises that could have been the main characters of this great game. People at least know who these characters are. They have carried there own franchise, or at least made some kind of name for themselves.
Everyone constantly says the game should have been a new I.P. or one of the forgetable characters from Diddy Kong Racing. Imagine if one of these under established and pretty pointless characters was the face of the game instead of Nuts & Bolts. The game would have been a catastrophic failure instead of just a failure. We would have never seen Banjo come to a new audience on the XBLA, and rare would have had even worse sales then it already did. I don't care who you blame for the piss poor advertising. Microsoft didn't trust Rare, and Rare hadn't exactly been making tons of hits since joining up so I can't blame them. Weather or not it was planned to be a Banjo Game the entire time or not, the game would not have sold at all if it was a new I.P.

Because new I.P.'s are destined to fail, right? Perhaps N&B's concept could have been pulled off better if it wasn't trying to be sewn together with the Banjo franchise.
You can't honestly think the game without Banjo would have been identical aside from a somewhat recognizable name.
