Are you really IT saavy, and can help?
My college's internet is kinda crappy. When I try to play Keyquest on Neopets, it never loads. I know it's not my Mac because I can play it just fine when at my boyfriend's. I talked to my IT center, and they're kinda stupid, and they want to know what port needs to be open in order for me to play. I tried contacting Neopets about it several times, because I don't know anything about ports, but they never reply to my support forms.

It's hard to explain in layman's terms, but the internet is requested and received in bunches of information called packets. And in order for your computer to get a certain site, it needs to get these packets in full. ISPs (Internet Service Providers) will sometimes replace the packets going to your computer with empty packets, which prevent you from actually connecting to a server. Comcast did it with LimeWire, so I but CDs.

I talked to the IT people about it, they aren't blocking it. Also, ISP? It's a college.

Well my collage's internet is fast, but server is crap. It takes you half an hour to log on let alone even get IE open. Often the server goes down\internet goes down and the IT people don't know swat about what too do or prevent it on happening again,in fact it's probably them causing it in the first place..

Neither does Comcast, Verizon, etc., but they sell access to it. Your college probably has a deal with one of the big internet providers so they can get it cheap and provide it for free, which is probably subtly evident, whether it be sponsoring local events, a higher percentage of advertising on campus or just plain monopolizing communication in the area, thus you use that as your mode of access to the internet.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that most colleges block torrent sites, game sites, and porn sites I don't remember where i read it though.
DEWadict Its not so much the ISP's as it is the college because they block the sites on the wireless router itself. |

Most likely your college is blocking it. Only thing you can do is request to whoever controls it to unblock it.

Nope. Talked to the head dude of IT at my school. He's not blocking it. He needs to know the port number for it. Which I don't know.. lol

Going out on a limb here by saying this...
If the guy isn't blocking it then why does he need the port number? The only reason he would need to have the port number is to unblock the signal. I feel sorry for that college, they have Dumbasses running their things. |

Your college may just block Flash or Java based content in general...
