Splinter Cell: Conviction Demo

Has anyone else given this a go yet? Though the demo is very short, it gives us a very good idea of how the game will play out, and I am loving the direction they are taking Splinter Cell. It is much more streamlined and a much smoother gameplay experience now. Manouvering around the environment is just as easy as you'd expect from a game like Uncharted 2, and the cover system is simply excellent. It was only a demo and it is still the best damn stralth game I've played in a long time.

Anyways, if you haven't already, try it out. Very short demo but of course it serves its purprose of giving us a taste up what Slpinter Cell has become.

I was anxiously anticipating a chance to try this game, I've been following Conviction for years, knashing my teeth during the spot of time where it was rumored to be cancelled. After seeing the project was revived, I had nothing but fear for the game, troubled development cycles almost always spell terrible game.

I was very impressed with the demo, they've really reinvented the way stealth games can be played, making things alot more streamlined and fluid. It controlled well, and it was fun. It made me even more excited to finally get my hands on the game.

I haven't had the chance to try it yet and I still fear the worst; Double Agent was a disappointment for me after the excellence of Chaos Theory. Is it really any good? You're not just saying it's good because it's on the Xbox and you're 360 whores?

Sorry. SC is/was one of my fave game series, the thrill I get from standing still for about 20 minutes waiting for the perfect moment to strike only to mess it up and make Sam run about like a total idiot, good times.

So I'll try the demo myself and give my obviously better and more correct opinion on it.

How much is this game like Chaos Theory? I thought that game was terrible, but the trailers for this looked interesting.

Man you guys all rushing to defend this game, it's like you're all Microsoft fan-boys or something.

See? That's exactly the shit I'm talking about. I've never even played the demo. I was talking about your asinine half-coherent post. It's so stupid, it's almost as if you simply slammed your face on the keyboard and posted it thinking you'd had some kind of higher knowledge from the rest of us. HURP DURP YOU'RE ALL 360 WHORES. Oh yeah. I suppose that's why you own one as well, then yes? Despite the fact that Joesus, the person who probably enjoys the 360 the most out of anyone in this thread, has defended the PS3 because he knows it's a good piece of hardware. That's exactly why we think the game looks good. Because you play it on a white and green system rather than a black one. GOD, you're a ****tard.

Haha no worries buddy, I'm no 360 fanboy.

Yeh I agree that Double Agent was disappoiting, but Conviction is a very different beast to what DA was. It is a much tighter, faster and more streamlined gameplay experience. The cool thing though is that it is still very silimar to the old Splinter Cell games in the way that you plan out attacks, it is just done much faster now. You still have access to sticky cams and whatnot, so the tactical side to the game is still there. The new additons really do kick ass as well. I forgot what it is called, but there is a feature which leaves behind a silohuette of your last known position to the enemy, so they will focus their attention mainly on this spot while you work your way around it.

Oh and mark and execute is awesome.

Just try the demo out, it will convince you better than my words.

Finally, someone uses me and the word fanboy/whore in the same sentence, yet doesn't call me one.

Aaron, Double Agent sucked, the game is good because the damn game is good. Go play the damned demo.

Personally, I thought it completely inverted the SC formula: traditionally, SC pushes you to be stealthy but still gives you the option to Rambo through the level, albeit with a certain degree of difficulty. Conviction pushes you to Rambo through the level while giving you the option to be stealthy. But it feels like being stealthy requires too much self-restraint, and it's simply a lot easier to just go storming in, guns blazing.

Furthermore, being stealthy is nowhere near what it was in the old games: you can't hide bodies, you get "sonar goggles" that let you see enemies through walls, the visibility mechanic is mis-used (the color de-saturation should be gradual, not all-or-nothing), and you have regenerating health. Mark and Execute is a pretty interesting feature, although some of Sam's cross-body pistol shots would have him taking out his own arm, not the enemy.

However, there were some things about the demo that I really liked. The "last known position" feature is nifty, as is the cover system. I wish we had a cover system like that years ago, especially after they got rid of the only thing like it, the SWAT turn. The "objectives on the walls" system is surprisingly un-intrusive and readable. And the awesomeness of the cover system is worth mentioning again.

While I applaud Ubisoft for doing something different for the final installment in the series, it just seems like it deviates a little too much from the SC formula. What I've heard about multiplayer sounds a little disappointing, too, with the entire thing being centered around two-player co-op.

Nevertheless, I'll still probably end up picking it up down the line, but it won't be when the game is $60.
