Games being objectively good doesn't mean its subjectively good
I was talking with a really emotional emo... i think. Well he seemed pretty emotional and sorta on tears on it. While i was all calm about it
I said i was gonna play Sonic 2006, and didn't care what other on the net said i think its good. And then he started saying "Its not objectively good". And i answered. "Well so aren't some movies, but just because reviewers says so doesn't mean i am going to be a sheep and dislike or like just because other says so. And then he gives reason that the game is broken and all that. And i say, well i think its fun for what it is. I don't care if its not perfect. I have played games that are considered objectively good, and found them not that fun. Taste is all subjective in entertainment. Its not the same as for example a house where its more important that its properly built. Entertainment is purely subjective and is not the end of the world when one likes something that dozens don't. And then he starts to turn in tears and starts hating how i like something that most don't. Well i am not a sheep, i can like and dislike something based on my own opinion. That's all really. So then we discuss bullying and that he's a little cry baby and a emo probably. And then he leaves the chat. And that's how it ends. |

For someone so keen on hugs and snuggles, I would think you wouldn't be so mean to sheep.
(This is a metaphor. I don't call people sheep.) |

It's okay to have guilty pleasures, just don't be a dick about it.

Sure, you can like whatever you want to like, but don't try to defend what you like on those grounds. I personally got a lot of enjoyment out of Lux-Pain, but I wouldn't call it good by any stretch of the imagination because there are many things that are just objectively bad about it. There are plenty of other games like that as well that I know are bad but I find enjoyable anyways.
It's completely okay to like something that's bad on an objective level, but it pains me to see people defend games like Sonic 2006 to the death despite the fact that on any objective level it's terrible. Not saying that's what you were doing, but it's something worth considering.

First of all, name calling is never cool. Especially when you're kind of turning words that are descriptive of natural human personalities and attributes into derogatories... I haven't heard "emo" in a while, but it's like calling someone you don't agree with "gay." It was a habit I used to have that I kind of got rid of because I was young and uninformed. I'm still trying to shift away from "retarded" even though for pretty much forever I thought it was alright as long as you weren't talking about a person since the core word didn't originate with a mental disability, but after learning about the varying sensitivities of people all around, I decided it might be worth changing.
Now, onto the main thing... yes, what you're saying is correct on its face. It is possible to like something that, from an objective standpoint, would be considered bad. Look at people's fascination with The Room. It's objectively awful by film standards, but for some people (a lot of which, on the internet) it's so bad it's enjoyable. Hell, I hold parties every year where we traditionally play Sonic '06 multiplayer right before everything wraps up because it's fun to abuse all the glitches, get lost in the co-op modes, and laugh at the game. I enjoy Sonic '06, much like you do -- maybe for a different reason, but still enjoy it nonetheless. It's not a good game IMO (which I'm sure many can agree upon) but my friends and I agree that it's enjoyably bad. Like The Room.
