Video Game Aesthetics Appreciation

This thread is dedicated to discussing general autistic-level appreciation for video game oddities/aesthetics.

I personally find early 3D games fascinating, like how most 3D platformer levels were enclosures with painted walls to give the illusion of openness (ex: Click Clock Wood having forest textured walls despite it essentially being a big room with a tree in the center).

Yeah the skyboxes were kind of spooky in a mysterious way in games like SM64 and BK/BT. These skyboxes from SM64 look more like they could be 90's electronic music album covers than like they could be from a video game.

Kind of bizarre to look at that without the context of the game.

Maybe more environmental design than general aesthetic, but it ****ing astounds me how awesome Half-Life 2 still looks. It's an FPS from 2004 with dated-ass textures and yet it still looks ****ing amazing. Every area has a very cinematic feeling to it, and I mean that in a really, really good way. I think it actually plays a huge part in the very desolate atmosphere Half-Life 2 usually has going on, there's just so much emptiness, especially in Highway 17 where you can actually go inside some of the houses along the road and find nothing but zombies and headcrabs.

Also yeah, one of my favorite places in Banjo-Tooie is the top of both of those mountains in Hailfire Peak just because of the freaky-ass skyboxes up there.

Funnily enough, I didn't notice that until Tooie, especially around the Wooded Hollow, Pine Grove, and Witchyworld. The woods are just trees drawn on a solid wall, and it's a little hard to ignore. I have no idea why they didn't just give the wall a rocky texture and litter some climbable trees around, like the ones from Spiral Mountain.

Bumping this thread cause I made it and I really like to discuss this sort of thing.

Also Witcher 2 has two of my favorite things in video games; forest levels and nice water effects. Check it.
