playing it at the moment, dk64 might be the most boring game i've ever played in my life. if this is what the collectathon platforming genre was evolving into, im glad banjo threeie became nuts and bolts instead. in all honesty, dk64 deserves more hate than n&b. n&b is at least a good game.
dk64 boasts great technological advancements for the n64-era graphically, but at the expense of engaging content the gameplay is akin to running errands during rush hour traffic

The problem with DK64 was that it was waaaaaaaay too big for its own good. Like the only reason why I don't feel like going back to it is because of how huge it is. It would be significantly more bearable (and maybe even more fun) if it wasn't so massive.

I never understood the hate this game got. I'll probably pick it up again when I have some free time to play it. The multiplayer was a blast, but I got most of the joy out of just trying to get everything in the single player. It's really stuffed with things to do, and just because you don't want to do all of the things doesn't make it a bad game. This isn't like Banjo Kazooie where you need nearly all the Musical Notes and all but 6 Jiggies to beat the game.

yeah but at least in banjo kazooie u can choose the path u take
the characters in dk64 all move pretty slow, the worlds are waaay too big, and the tasks usually have to be done in a specific order. theres no real exploring, u just look for anything that looks like a switch or a button. im not saying if u like it ur wrong, i just think its bad game design.

The choice system is just different. In Banjo you choose how you get there and in DK64 you choose what you go and get. I don't think DK is flawless, and I certainly think Banjo Kazooie is the better game, but it's not like the game is forcing you to do everything. It's the same stupid argument thrown at most Ubisoft games like Assassin's Creed and Watch_Dogs. Just do the shit you feel like doing.

theres a lot of meandering parts incorporated into the game's progression, too much for most people, that's all im saying.

Donkey Kong 64 is the worst Nintendo 64 game that I enjoy

I feel like Rare got a little bit too happy with their extra 4MB and they said **** IT LET'S JUST MAKE IT FOUR BANJO-KAZOOIES STAPLED TOGETHER.
MORE BANANAS.

I would be happy if it was just a combo-heavy 3D action game starring disco Chunky Kong taking place entirely in Creepy Castle.

I agree on the DK64 subject. It's not an awful game, but when I played through it recently and tried to beat it start to finish, it definitely showed its age and some parts genuinely felt unfinished.
I did a retrospective on Giant Bomb about the game a while back and one of the key things I noticed was the fact that the level design was, in almost all instances, large landmarks segmented by long, boring hallways. Literally every level, sans maybe Creepy Castle, was just featureless pathways interspersed with mini dungeons. You talk about boring level design and it honestly doesn't get much worse than that. And if I had a quarter for every minigame I played in DK64 that I actually enjoyed, I'd have to file for bankruptcy, and there was a metric shitton of them to pad out the game. Plus the fact that beating the original Donkey Kong twice on one life is a requirement to finish the game - it's just an absolute mess that only looks good through nostalgia goggles.

Am I the only one who still doesn't hate DK64 and feels like it still holds up well despite the camera?
