Pokemons difficulty curve
Bizarrely, the Pokemon games are some of the most difficult and frustrating around. First off, each Gym requires the player to train their Pokemon to a decent enough level whereas to beat them effectively. This alone is a grind comparable to leveling up on an MMO.
Of course if it didn't have that, there'd be virtually no game to play; but that doesn't change the fact that the Pokemon games can be incredibly frustrating to play. Discuss your frustrating moments that you've had in a Pokemon game.

I think leader gym battles simply have cheats on, like they can usually 1HKO you with X attack, and when they give you the MT for that, it turns out it wasn't that great. But that makes them a challenge.
Anyway, so far the only pokemon game I've ever grinded on was on soul silver for the second round of E4, where I would just battle, lose, keep the exp, and come back, and not that many times either. You can plow through the games battling only the trainers on the routes (I always have a max repel on, unless I want to catch something in particular) and get leveled to a point decent enough to face anything that comes, save for really unfavorable situations (like facing a gym that as advantage over most of your pokemon types), and even in that case it's usually nothing you can't pot/revive your way through. In pokemon white I've noticed a huge difficulty curve increase after the main game, my pokes are lvl ~50 and trainers all have ~65; yet I can survive all the way from one town to the next, not even healing. As for 2nd round E4 and the like I can't tell yet, but I hope to be leveled enough when I get there, or just pot like mad, you gotta spend your money on something besides max repels you know. As for fustrating moments, any annoyer npc, you know, sand attack+reduction+double team+toxic; spore+growth; when they "miracously" survive at 1 hp when they shouldn't have just to use a restore all next turn, etc. |

The most frustrating things imo are training piece of shit pokémon to let them evolve but taking a long time to do so.
Like Ghastly which doesn't learn decent moves for quite a lot of levels, or Rhyhorn and Grimer who take way to long to evolve (though Rhyhorn isn't the worst).

Also; stupid Ralts who only knows Growl and is obtained at a point in the game where switching out upon starting a battle is a kinda deadly move.

The thing that's both good and bad about the newer games is the Gym Leaders/Elite 4's now insistence on type moves as opposed to type Pokemon. It's good that it requires you to mix and match moves with different types and have a well rounded squad, But Koga's Skuntank is just unfair.

I've only beaten 2 Pokemon games; Diamond/Platinum and Leaf Green (ONLY BY LUCK). Fact.
I remember the moment I was about to lose my last Pokemon to Gary or whatever I named him. I somehow managed to get in one more attack and I won! I've tried many times to beat the Saphire Elite Four, but I just can't.

Pokemon games are some of the easiest RPG's I've ever played. I don't really understand why you're having a problem with them.
Then again I haven't played any of the games since Ruby and Sapphire. Last edited by Avarice; 6th October 2010 at 11:41 PM. |

One thing I've noticed about Soul Silver is that Pokemon are a lot harder to catch. :/
Hell, my team consists mostly of Level 57 Pokemon most of the time. Heaven forbid I come across that must have Pokemon (damn you Level 20 Larvitar) and my Ultra Balls won't catch it. I wasted a good three Ultra Balls on a Level 10 Ralts because it kept breaking them, and it would have fainted if I used any of the Pokemon in my party. :/ Edit: I'm actually glad they made leveling easier in HGSS; that's where I lose my patience with most RPGs.

It's quite unbalanced when I can beat all of Soul Silver with one pokemon using all fire moves+tackle.

Pokemon Black/White introduce a new Experience Gain System that's different from the previous games.

When a legendary Pokemon has 1 HP left and you use lots of Ultra Balls, but you just can't catch it!

POKEMON YELLOW WITH BROCK.
I usually just max out my starter and pummel through everything with it, but I had a hell of a time using that Pikachu. I finally caught 5 Rattatas and used Leer to lower the crap out of Brock's Pokemons' defense, and then used Body Slam or something as Pikachu. This still took a LOT of tries, though. Also the legendary dogs. |
