Fangames always wind up fail and unrealistic (for the main game's universe, anyway) with too many in-jokes. Make the RPG.

Also, keep in mind that if a Banjo or Sonic fangame is made, it would be VERY close to the main game's universe, with no in-jokes, as I'd hate to screw up a game based on one of my favorite franchises.
