That "mysterious" N64 feeling
Does anybody else think that most N64 games had sort of a... "mysterious" feel about them? Like even after you beat the game, there still is much more to do? Maybe it's because of all the rumors and secrets (Luigi in Mario 64, Stop n' Swap, Triforce in OoT, etc), maybe it's the graphics, I don't know. All I know is that very few, if any at all, can rekindle this feel of mystery that N64 games had.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It always feels like there's so much more, and N64 games have some of the craziest rumors I've ever heard.
When I was young, one of my friends was telling me about a Dirt Temple and going inside of the Great Deku Tree as an adult, in OoT. Crazy stuff. ![]()

These days games just don't have that feeling on "wonder" that N64 games had, the only game that ever came close was The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion.

That's one of the many reasons N64 is my favorite console.
N64 was really a huge step in relatively unknown territory for games of its time, so a lot of stuff was "new" and "wonderful". You never knew where developers were coming from with any given thing, because those were the experimental days for them. Nowadays the newest and biggest things are wii remotes and things that feel pushed and gimicky. None of these things will be anywhere near as breathtaking as that first step into three dimensions. |

N64 had a terriable controller, 4KB texture Cache limit which made many games have blurry textures to reduce the texture cache memory used and used cartridges which are worse than cd's and cost more to produce but the n64 was still wonderful and great. I have always had more fun with the n64 than with the ps1. Games ended up more expensive on the n64 but it was still geat.

I know what you mean. Sometimes I felt like the N64 came from The Twilight Zone.

N64 isn't from a twilight zone or anywhere close but still great and better than the ps1.

I think part of it is that most of us were much younger when the N64 came out, and possibly had a bigger sense of wonder and mystery about the games. Also, it was like nothing any of us had ever seen, and all of that combined really created this sense of wonder and discovery.
Another thing, as games have progressed, to me theyve gotten a lot more linear. There isnt as much fun in just exploring in many, and i miss that. Like, Mario Galaxy. It was a great game, really colorful worlds, however, everything was sort of confined. There weren't these little hidden alcloves or areas, you could basically see everything in a very quick playthrough of the world. Hopefully BK:NB will be able to rekindle this feeling. N64.. those were the days. |

When you played a new game on the 64, you were all excited, and you thought the gameplay and such would be much different, making it a better experience.
Now, it's just the same old, same old. Beat it, trade it in. We don't appreciate them as much as we used to.

I thought the Gamecube sort of kept that feeling of wonderment the N64 had.
I remember thinking how awesome it would be when I got all the Shine Sprites in SMS and could battle Il Paintissimo because "he's the one who has the magic brush." Or thinking how cool it will be when I collect everything in Wind Waker to "become an adult again." I think the last era of Nintendo games were close to us, we felt that anything could happen in them. Don't even get me started on the Pokemon games. I was so gullible back then, I found a cheat on the internet and did everything I could to make it happen. Getting mew and celebi and those Pokemon. Man... now there's action replay. Way to kill the "magic..." Nowadays it's all about motion control and reaching the goal... |

I agree with the whole OOT thing. I've had the game for ten years, and I'm still finding new things from time to time.
But yeah, people expect too much from games now a days. Not only that but games get so much coverage that when you actually sit down to play it you expected too much and find yourself disliking the game. In short: we've been spoiled. Not to mention that a lot of concepts and ideas have been done and redone before.

man i thought I was the only one who had those kind of mysterious feelings from this system. I always thought there was such more after I found out the floating mines glitch in Goldeneye, and other games.....ahh the memories...

Yeah I also thought I was the only one with that feeling. I just thought it was because I haven't played it in a while. I love that console. I'm probably gonna stay up all night playing it.
![]() Oh and the reason most games don't have that feeling is because almost all the games have no glitches anymore. THAT SUCKS!!! Last edited by DXrules1220; 28th August 2008 at 03:01 AM. |
