"An Eye for an Eye Makes the Whole World Blind"

I hate that phrase with a passion. That statement is nothing but propoganda to scare people against following an "eye for an eye" punishment system. If the whole world goes blind, you are clearly doing the proceeding incorrectly.

Take for example a murderer. He goes and takes someone's life. In turn, his life is taken. Remind me where the whole world goes blind again? Sounds like a one on one trade off that doesn't affect anyone else to me.

As long as the consequence is always aimed directly at the starter, there shouldn't be an issue. For example, if person A rapes person B's daughter, "revenge" wouldn't be raping person A's daughter. The actual rape punishment would be done to person A him/herself. Now, that punishment is arguably inadequate for the crime, but that still doesn't translate into "lol t3h whole world goz blind." All that says is "it isn't the best form of punishment," period.

Well, I see your point about how "the whole world will go blind" is exaggerated; but it isn't a big deal. All you need to know is that, if someone lights your house on fire, you don't need to go and do the same. The way I see it "the world going blind" is just a way of saying "things will go wrong".

Actually, if you continued the process, thus taking his other eye, and he did the same to you, you would both be blind, and then you could go on your merry way.

Yeah, but what is the basis for that assumption? If you burn down my house, I burn your house down in repayment, and nothing else occurs afterwards (it says an eye for an eye, not an eye for an eye for an eye for a tooth for a foot) then how does the whole world get affected?
