Microsoft's Next Console

The Xbox 360's generation is well underway, and even three years after its successful release, it's still maintains its high popularity. Under these circumstances, it will not come to a screeching halt. Like all other game developers, they continue to move forward and design brand new consoles. When it comes time for Microsoft to decide on their new Xbox console, what features will it contain?

In terms of the name, I wouldn't expect it to be entitled Xbox 720. If it receives that name, I will be surprised. As for features, I'm expecting virtual reality. Similar to the Matrix, only you wouldn't be 'jacked in' to the game entirely. By the time the console is released, the year will be 2010-2020. By then, virtual reality in video games should have already been tested.

I think they will have a new console soon, but not virtual reality. That is a several steps up now from video games nowadays. And, Microsoft seems to stick to traditional gaming. As it looks as of now, the only company who might try this is Nintendo.

A game developer (I'm not certain as to which) attemped a minor dosage virtual reality. It was entitled the Virtual Boy and it was not a good console. I was never even aware of its existence until three years ago. But in terms of Microsoft, they may just attempt virtual reality thoroughly. It will be the eighth generation. By then, I am expecting an enhancement.

well the next xbox is due for 2012 so I would probably say the next generation after the next generation, there is a possibility there will be virtual reality.

Why do they have to try anything new? The next Xbox will have borderline realistic graphics, incredibly realistic and smoothe gamepaly, and bigger and better games. That's what a new console should be.

Hopefully without the freezing, and the red ring of death, too. As long as that is worked on, I'm not gonna have an issue with it.

I expect the next console to simply be more advanced; better graphics, faster loading times, and fewer reported problems. Of course there would be new features too, but I wouldn't expect a huge leap like Nintendo did with the Wii. I doubt virtual reality happening within a decade even.

I really hope they don't try any "innovations" with it and keep it traditional. Graphics are about as good as they're going to get for awhile right now, so maybe a bit more refined stuff but it'll probably be close to the current visuals. It'll sell well if they stick to the near perfect formula of the 360, but also add things rather than making an entirely new console.

Why on earth would Microsoft fail? They're currently performing marvelously with their console and games.

they will just improve on the 360 and make it more dependable as far as hardware goes. If they do a whole new console then it will be at least 2012 before the next consoles see's the light of day. I bet they are already testing new chips, boards & design layouts. I bet they'll work on 4 or 5 versions of the 720 or what ever they end up calling it. They will try many different configurations and pick the one with the best performance and reliability. I will bet they don't want another 360 hardware problem on their hands in the next console generation. Well at least this is my hope.

Personally, I hope that there isn't a new console for awhile. Back in the day, there was more of a necessity to ship out a new device. NES -> SNES was a huge graphical leap, SNES/Genesis -> N64/Saturn introduced 3D gaming, N64/Playstation -> Gamecube/Playstation 2 introduced what I consider real 3D gaming, and Cube/Xbox/PS2 -> Wii/360/PS3 introduced core, integrated online services and top-of-the-line processing power. We are at a point where companies can't even staff enough people to make use of all of the features of the current generation, PS3 especially. Why add on to something that developers can't even max now?

I hope the PSWii60 sees at least another six years of shelf life. In a way, they do release new consoles and updates, anyway. Think about it - if the 360 didn't have a live update service, the dashboard update would probably just be the interface for the new console. They are effectively upgrading us real time now instead of making us shell out more money for new hardware. Companies usually lose money on the hardware and gain it back with the software anyway, so it is in their best interest to keep going this route.
