Monsters vs. Aliens

I got my advance ticket and everything.

I like wacky / crappy sci-fi B-movies and cartoons. It's like this thing was made for me.

Let us all now chat about it.

This will stink!!! No plot, no character development, no real point, the only good thing is a few character designs.

So... the movie hasn't come out yet, and yet you already know that it does not have a plot or character development? Dude, you gotta teach me how to do that "lookin' into the future" thing you do. In any case, the point is moot and you're totally wrong about everything. A simple search for info on the movie reveals the following...

Plot: a horde of B-movie monsters protect America from a horde of B-movie aliens. (yeah, True Art it's not, but nobody said it had to be in order to be good) Character development: nobody knows yet. Except for the people who made it. Point: an homage to 1950s creature features. And the character designs are indeed awesome.

Everything points to good times ahead.

It's a kid movie, it doesn't need character development or a point or anything like that. Learn how to just sit back, leave your brain at home, and be entertained. With that said, I'm actually looking forward to this, which is rare for me, since I'm not usually a huge fan of animated PG movies.

OK, so three of my most despised pet peeves are in this post. One, just because a movie is animated doesn't mean it is for kids, or in better terms, it doesn't mean it ignores the 18+ demographic. Two, just because a movie is clean (as in, no graphic or extreme sex / violence) doesn't mean it is for kids or ignores the 18+ demographic. And three, and most insidious of all, just because a movie has kids as a substantial demographic doesn't mean it's stupid. (Leave your brain at home? Excusez-moi?) It's obvious that a lot of heart went into it, so I feel it's safe to assume that the screenwriter cared about the content of his script and was not deliberately pandering to morons. That mentality assumes that all children are stupid. I don't care for that kind of assumption, even though I myself am not a child.

Seeing as you're looking forward to the movie, I may have misunderstood some of your assertions, (and in any case I'm not seeking to wage war against you) but the way you phrased it really made it seem very immature.

Edit: If it's going to be a good movie, it does need character development and a point.

I didn't say it was stupid, or that older people couldn't enjoy it, I'm just saying it probably won't requiring a whole lot of brain power to get. And I know movies being animated doesn't automatically make them for kids (I just watched Resident Evil: Degeneration yesterday).

Ah, well, in that case yeah. It's just that I'm an animation fanboy like you're a Watchmen fanboy.

Lemme all break your hearts here.

I got an advanced screening of the movie a couple weekends ago (if you really don't believe me, I think I have the ticket stub laying around.) It was just... stupid. There was the occasional funny joke, but it was, overall, just another kids movie. I suppose I went into it expecting things like WALL-E, or other Pixar greats, only to come out realizing that Dreamworks blows. It was cliché, but of course, that's fine for the seven-year-old demographic.

I remain un-heartbroken.

Whenever the subject of movies comes up, Andre and I invariably disagree. The fact that he thinks WALL-E is anything resembling a good movie at all, let alone "a Pixar great," lets me know that his taste in film is sufficiently different from my own not to change my expectations of Monsters vs. Aliens in the least. If it's bad, I predict it will be so bad it's good, which will in turn make it better because its whole angle is to honor so-bad-it's-good movies of the past.

A relatively good amount. But again, the jokes are just so... stupid. Like the scene with the "robot drone." You'll know what I mean if you see it.

I still can't believe Mandolin didn't like Wall-E. I almost always agree with what Mandolin says animation wise, being an animation fanatic myself. When you started dissing Wall-E I though it was going to be mediocre but for me it was a fantastic film.

I can't wait for Toy Story 3-D. Alas, that's a long way off.
