pointless grate?

Just been watching some BK videos, and I noticed near the picture puzzle for Rusty Bucket Bay, there's a tunnel leading down with a cover at the end.
Can you open it? You can't get into the room without raising the water level, so was this an alternative way off getting to the picture? Where does that tunnel go?

The tunnel leads from the room with the MMM level portrait to the room with the RBB portrait. You can break the grate if the water level is only at the height attained by hitting the switch in the MMM lobby room. After you hit the water level switch in the RBB lobby room, you can reach the RBB portrait without having to use the tunnel.

Yeah, there's 2 ways you can get to the RBB portrait. You do not need the level 2 water switch. Simply go around back to the MMM puzzle area after raising the level 1 water switch. Break down the gate, and enter that way. Once opened, you can now enter RBB by just walking in! You don't have to swim into it, since the water's still low.

I have no idea why Rare decided to have this extra pathway.

For ALL grates:
According to the instruction manual before it was updated when Rare realized they published the beta instructions, grates could be opened using jiggies.

I started up a new save today, only took me and hour or two to get to the MMM picture room. I can see a grate in the wall with a tunnel behind it, I assume it's the same one, but I have no idea how to open it. Any ideas?

aise the water once. You should know what that means if it's the right grate. Then rat-a-tap-tap it.

It can be destroyed? Win! now can go to rusty bucket bay before MMM with the moon jump or transformation cheat.
