What makes a song?

What do you define as a good song?

I for one like it to sound nice, no ear rape. Most of the time this is either latin chanting or plain symphony music. Or something.. epic. If you don't know what the internets term of epic is GTFO.

Another thing, I really don't like songs with lyrics.. At all. Unless they are coupled with a deep, deep meaning and a good melody.

One word. Melancholy. A good use of instrumentation, a good set of lyrics that match the music, and beauty.

What's the problem with lyrics? It's a way conveying your feelings. It adds to the melody, with it's own melody and has meaning, like this song.

Harmonies, great melodies, odd time signatures, and a great singer with a powerful voice.

Also, some opera. A large, huge orchestra playing music with PASSION as one guy with a voice that can knock a wall down belts it out.

@StarFox, that is pretty good.. Although I'm not listening to the words but the note the words are on, still It is good. Not fast enough for me, at least IMO

I have certain periods where I'll only listen to particular songs, so if I gave you my definition of what makes a song today, it'd probably completely different to what I'd say a few months down the track.

There are times where I'll forget about regular music and just listen to stuff from games... which happens quite often, really. Isn't hard since there's no lyrics and you can't get angry at the singer's nasally voice or what have you. Some of the stuff DB posted before I'd gladly listen to if it were only an instrumental piece.

The guitar solo at the end is really amazing. I'd advise listening to it. It's in perfect harmony with the tone of the song, and has a beautiful tone I wish I could get out of my guitar.

Tone is part of any sound you hear, even if it doesn't sound pleasant and melody is just any succession of sound registering at different notes. My main point was that you can't say a piece of music isn't music just because you don't like it.

Sorry, I meant tone / mood of a song, whether it be depressing, uplifting and joyous.

I guess that is true about melody too... So I guess rap really IS music. OMG.
