Okay, how does this work?

Y'know in some animated media, we'll have animal characters that walk on two legs, talk, and have characteristics similar to humans. Alongside them, we'll have characters who behave in a manner similar to the animal in which they are based.

For example, we have Mickey Mouse, who owns a dog, Pluto. One of his close friends is also a dog, Goofy.
Also, Arthur the aardvark, and his dog, Pal.

See this comic

How does this work? D:

You see, millions of years ago there was a species of canine. Through the processes of adaptation and breeding differences, this species of dog eventually split into two separate species. Over the years, these two new species grew farther and farther apart, becoming more different with each generation. One species eventually evolved to walk on two legs, and to learn and think similar to a primate. The other group continued to stand on four legs and hunt in packs throughout the wild. Eventually the two sides learned to coexist and became dependent on one another. The more intelligent group ended up taking in and using the wild group for protection of both themselves and their property (such as livestock). Over the years, the intelligent group bred the wild group to create all sorts of unique types since the intelligent group now kept the wild group as loving caring companions. And that is how we got Goofy and Pluto.

Well, they're treated like humans to relate them to the audience, yet it also allows them to be senselessly beaten up and doesn't scar a child for life because they're hybrid creations that don't exist.
