Perfect Dark Beta

I was searching on Google Video just now and I found this video of Perfect Dark. Video . In the video there are a few beta things such as Tent Easten as the enimies, stairs in carrington instititute, picking up a couger magnum and killing elvis, etc.

This was good to see in a video as I'd only ever seen screenshots of it before. But what got me was the ending. From about 2:04 the music changed. I'd heard it before but knew it wasn't in Pefect Dark anywhere, it was from Timesplitters: Future Perfect on Scotland the Brave level (I think). Those guys at Free Radical must have chosen to use some beta music from Perfect Dark in the game since the majority of them used to work at Rare and thought no one would notice.

I'm pretty sure no one has mentioned the beta music in Pefect Dark let alone that it was used in Timesplitters. Has this ever been mentioned before?

Whoa! That's absolutely crazy! You're right, that's definitely a PD-esque rendition of Scotland The Brave. What's strange that the melody of the song doesn't really fit with the rest of the music in PD.

So, Grant Kirkhope actually composed the melody and harmonisation of a song in TimeSplitters? Very odd.

You're forgetting that Graeme Norgate did the majority of music in GoldenEye and Perfect Dark... and since he works at Free Radical now... any music that he made that didn't appear in a Rare game is still technically his

He did? I was always under the impression it was Kirkhope - what with how Goldeneye's music was all based on remixes of the same theme - and then he went one step further with the remixing-of-themes idea with Banjo-Kazooie's location dependant musical renditions.

I'll take your word for it, though.

Incidentally, it's damn cool hearing that theme with PD's distinctive drumming.

Well with each variation of a song you hear in Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, etc., are all on the same MIDI track. When you enter a certain area, the proper channels are muted and unmuted, giving the game a dynamic, interactive soundtrack.

With GoldenEye... yeah, there were a few tracks that didn't use a lot of the Bond theme. Like the Statue Park theme, which sounds very "Kirkhope" to me. Robin Beanland, according to Icy, did the elevator music.

Then there's David Clynick, who did some work for Perfect Dark, and remixed his own stuff for Perfect Dark Zero (Combat Menu! w00!).

Anyway, I think Grant Kirkhope did more sound effect work than music with those games. Icy might know a little more, but I imagine with three musicians on each game, one would mostly do music, one would mostly do sound effects. The third would just help wherever needed.

Plus you've got Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie pretty much being developed alongside GoldenEye and Perfect Dark, so Grant would have been extremely busy if he did as much work on GE and PD as he did with Banjo.

Sadly, Graeme Norgate left Rare before Perfect Dark was released, and thus, had his name ripped out of the credits, along with everyone else who left for Free Radical. I'd imagine there was some hard feelings between those guys and Rare, if the name "Free Radical" is to be taken literally

Anyway, that's it for my completely unstructured, rambling post

Yep - it's quite a clever system. But my point was that Grant Kirkhope was obviously talented at arranging melodies to suit the atmosphere he was aiming for - and in Goldeneye's soundtrack, you can definitely see how whoever was behind the soundtrack was very good at arranging a theme in different ways, so it led me to believe it was entirely Grant's work. Still, you're right - he was probably much too busy with Banjo-Kazooie.

Hmm, that's a pity - although I didn't think they were at odds with one another from looking at Free Radical's site. They have articles on what it was like to develop GoldenEye, for instance - and they seem to recall the time fondly.

I remember somebody managed to hack out the beta music track featured in the middle of that video - but has anybody ever found the Scotland The Brave track? I suppose it's been entirely removed.

I never meant this was the first beta music found. All I was saying was that in the video at the end was some music from another game. It seemed like it was originally intended for Perfect Dark but wasn't used for some reason. I'd never heard any mention of this before so I posted about it.

I knew some beta music had been found in the game as I had seen that website before. Thanks for the link though as I forgot about that site.
