Well, shit

Today I was infected with the scam virus scanner Vista Internet Security. Apparently it skipped right past my real scanner, Trend Micro Antivirus, so that proved to be useless me. I attempted to remove it from the registry manually and have SpyWare Doctor pick up my lose ends, but of course things never work out that conveniently. While SpyWare Doctor was able to easily locate the source of the problem, it refused to do anything about it unless I purchased the full version. Now isn't that a good marketing strategy?

So RWP, any ideas?

You could do a System Restore to whenever you know you didn't have it. Probably just a couple days back.

I guess I could always leave that as an option. Of course I'm not sure if it will work with this sort of thing or when the last time a restore point was made. For now I'm keeping that as a last resort.

Buy Norton Security Suite. It's worth all of your money.

My aunt's computer had the same thing a week or so ago, only for Windows XP.
It kept saying a good amount of helpful programs and tools (Task Manager, System Restore, Spybot Search & Destroy, etc.) were infected and would run itself even if you opted out of running "your virus protection".
If it's doing that to you, press ctrl+alt+del as soon as you log into Windows and wait for the virus to try to run, allow it to run, and end it as soon as it shows up in the task manager, then run your real virus protection software (I used Spybot) and make sure it's up to date, and you should be fine.
I tried Malware Bytes, DB, and it didn't detect it, even after I updated it...

I'm giving that one a shot right now. If that doesn't work then I might really be screwed.

Also, I discovered that running a program as an admin will usually bypass the viruses attempted block. And to think people say Vista is good for nothing...

Norton is the most useless software I've ever seen.

The way I fixed this on everyone else's computer (not that it got rid of it) was by using Glary Utilities to block the process... Of course it blocked it, so I had to make a shortcut to the process manager, and then restart the computer and quickly block it.

I have Trend Micro and all it seems to do is slow my computer way down. In my new computer I'm going to have Nod32, I think. Someone recommended it to me, so maybe try it out?
