Hmmm... Dell/Alienware or Apple?

See Title. I'm off to college next year and although it's not required to get a laptop, it's strongly recommended. I've always wanted to have a gaming computer because it's something I've missed out on a lot. Anyways, I'm looking for a good laptop around $1600-$2000.

As much as I'd like to buy from another retailer than either of these two companies, I save up to $300 due to student discounts by buying from them. It works out to be a pretty decent deal in the end.

So the ultimate question is: Should I get a Dell or an Apple laptop (factoring in battery life into the equation also), and what would be the best bang for my buck ($1600-$2000 before the discount)?

Gaming computer? Don't get an Apple.

My friend bought an M15X laptop and it's really beautifully built. You can build the specs however you like too, to suit you. If you want a gaming computer, I don't recommend a Mac.

Yeah. If you're a student I'd avoid both Alienware and Apple. Out of the two you suggested, I'd go with Alienware. But if you're open to suggestions, get an Asus as Alakazam said.

But Alienware isn't trash at all, my friends laptop is beautiful, quick and runs nearly anything at top spec. How is that trash? Is there something about Alienware I don't know?

Not an Mac in that case. You'd be paying more money for a computer than can do less. They're really more of a preference, but if your into gaming, getting a Mac is especially laughable.

Also, don't get a Dell, you'd be better off with an HP or a Toshiba. Alienware laptops are ugly as shit and incredibly expensive. Not to mention Dell has terrible customer service.

and I was about to say we finally agree on tech ;~;

I just know it's extremely overpriced and have heard mostly negative feedback about them, I've never actually used one, just going by what I've heard. All I do know is that my asus laptop is brill as hell.

If you don't know what you're talking about, it's not fair to call it trash. But I do see your perspective.

You could start by looking at the what the computer will be used for:

If it is a laptop, I suggest go with an effecient work computer. If you wanted portable games, buy a DSi or a PSP.

If it is a desktop computer, if it will just be for work then don't worry about video cards and all that. Go for price and effeciency.

If you want a Gaming PC (will also do work things if needed), seek your local computer store for what they offer in prebuilt recommendations and post it here so I can have a look at it for you.

A Gaming laptop is possible, but a not recommended.

Well, Alakazam, I did take the time to look at an Asus laptop. It has a fantastic price and is better than the Alienware PC's in many aspects, as I expected. The one thing that I find troublesome, though, is that the battery life is only 2 hours at best, and that doesn't seem like it will do, especially if I'll have to worry about if my laptop will die in class.

Honestly, that's my only gripe about it. Then again, if I just am careful with not overdoing it, I should be fine, I believe.

The battery life sucks, yeah, but I always plug mine in wherever I go so it's not a problem for me. Thing is a beast that sucks power like mad so what do you expect?

I'd like to make a point that once you install Windows on a Mac it works better than any other Windows running laptop, it's been proven.

All he has to do is purchase a battery that lasts longer.
