I'm going to argue that Mario 3 did happen and that the events were just retold through a play. Like the ending of Paper Mario 2, where Doopliss became an actor to retell Mario's adventure.

Also, wasn't Mario 2 just about Mario saving the land of dreams from Wart?

Yeah, my thoughts exactly.

As for Mario 2: The game's introduction states that the events, which occur in Mario's dream, actually do take place after he awakens and visits some nearby cave.
