Rare was almost Activision Studio

Wow....I am just shocked but Ed Fries just revealed that Activion was closer to closing the deal than MS...also explains the high prize!

I don't know what's worse; Signing with Activision or being Microsoft's first party.

I don't really have anything negative to say about Rare being Microsoft-exclusive, but I think it could have been a good thing if Rare went third-party with Activision. Imagine if Banjo-Threeie would have been on the 360, Wii, and the PS3.

Or them having the power over their own franchises, if Activision would have let them that is.

There are only a couple of bad scenarios I can envision from an Activision take over.

1) Activision pumps out weak/bad Rare franchise titles.
2) Activision wastes potential in Rare.
3) Activision doesn't utilize Rare and their franchises fade into obscurity.

Though it can be argued those those three arguments are one in the same and they are already happening with Microsoft.

They are fading into obscurity, because Rare was chosen to be the Kinect scapegoat after the failures of their Xbox games. The only thing they had remotely close to a success was, of all the possible games, Viva Pinata. Kameo was good but didn't sell enough.

What does that tell Microsoft? That Rares hardcore fanbase is too hard to please.

Oh God, didn't Activision make that mediocre Rampage game?

At least there would be no problem with having the Activision Goldeneye2.0 for Wii now

Actually, EA would never let that happen.

That's just a port of Goldeneye 64.

Activision has also made Mech Warrior, Quake, Civilization, Call of Duty, Doom 3, Guitar Hero, all of which are notable series, (even if I don't like some of them). It's not like they're all that horrible. You can hit or you can miss. They mostly miss, but they get some.
