[The Colonel]

Ever heard of this? It's an old JRPG on the PS2 developed by Level 5, where the basic story is you play as a boy (Named Max) and a girl (Named Monica) who are trying to save the future from emperor Griffon by changing the past, using their magical stones, called "Atmalillia", which allow them to travel through time.

The story can be confusing at some points, but the RPG elements make it worth while, as you can not only upgrade and level up your weapons, but you can "Synthesize" items to alter your weapons' stats. For example: you want a Cyclone-based Pistol? Simply find some Wind crystals, then synthesize them into your Pistol! Of course, in order to get a new version of a weapon, you need to upgrade certain stats, and your weapons have "Synthesize points" which go down when you synthesize. If you want to get points back, you have to kill more enemies with that weapon. There's also a weapon degradation system, so you also need to carry around some repair powder. Or, better yet; synthesize the repair powder and use it to increase weapon durability! And if you get some extra weapons, you can synthesize those, too. You can also "Invent" things by taking pictures and combining them to get ideas, then get the materials needed and construct the invention! And finally, later on, it adds SimCity-ish aspects where you can build a town, convince people to immigrate there, etc.

The combat system is also pretty simple and fun: Press Circle to target an enemy, press X to attack, Hold L1 to use Monica's Magic/Max's Pistol, and R1 to block. You can also use items like bombs on enemies.

Give it a try. It's one of the better RPG's on the PS2.

This game. Just this game. I had it when I was a younger fellow. It made me so mad. I got stuck so much. I've never beaten it, despite owning it and it's barely related at all prequel.

YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG

Seriously, I've just gotten to Chapter 2 and the game isn't all that frustrating so far. Just gotta know what you're doing.

Dude, I was like ten when I got that game. I did everything wrong.

Who knows, maybe I'll pick it up again.

You should. It gets really addictive once you get good at it.

Oh, and a tip if you start playing it: Don't synthesize Iron, or Copper chunks.

From what I've played of it, I honestly prefer the original Dark Cloud.

The original Dark Cloud has a completely different art style, I hear.

I loved the original Dark Cloud, but never got into the second one.

I hear they're making a third one though...
