Overclocking
I currently run on a 2.2ghz processor, and it just isn't cutting it for some of the things that I'd like to do, such as rendering videos and streaming. Two simple questions.
1. What is the easiest way to overclock? 2. Is it safe to overclock if I have no way of getting any extra cooling into my case? If it changes anything, here's my full specs. Edit: I'm on Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 now. That screenshot was taken a while back.

1. Go into your bios to see if it supports overclocking
2. If yes, gradually increase by .1 ghz, and test it, to see if it unstable. Increase in incriments of .1ghz until you crash. Then, take it down .2ghz from when you crashed. If no, cry because there is no reliable way to do it.

Is "testing until my system crashes" really a good idea?

Yes. 1 crash would most likely be due to heat. That is alright. And by crash, I mean any kind of instability.

overclocking an intel celeron won't do you much good anyway.

Better than doing nothing at all. 2.2 is pretty pathetic. I'll take any advancements over it I can get.

Actually no, 2.2ghz is a nice processor speed. I mean the iPad I'm using has a 1ghz processor, compared to 2.2; that's crazy fast.

it's not that pathetic at all, really. besides, the fact it's not a good processor renders the clock speed (within reason) more or less meaningless in terms of increasing the performance.

So... Perhaps more RAM is what I'm looking for?

Pretty sure video rendering is a processor's job and has little to do with anything else.
You just need a better processor in general, and that likely means a new motherboard. EDIT: My mistake, I didn't know how often Intel socket types change. I'm still kinda amateur at this. Last edited by Siege; 19th July 2011 at 03:26 AM. |

No, your RAM is fine. Overclocking an outdated CPU isn't going to give you a huge performance increase. There are a lot of factors that play a role in how powerful a CPU is, one of which is cache size.

depends, where do you want to increase performance? if it's rendering videos what you want is a better processor unless your graphics card handles it. for streaming, you need a better internet connection.

Streaming will still beat the shit out of that processor he has there.

yeah maybe. Intel Celeron's are really weak at most any speed.

Hm. I think I'll just save up roughly $1000 and a new computer entirely. Something that I know I can upgrade when the time comes. The specs in the OP ran me about $450 ($400 for everything except the gfx card, plus 50 for the card), which I think was a pretty good price.
My card is able to run anything out on the market today without a hitch, but my FPS suffers on occasion. That's a tell-tale sign that my processor would need to be upgraded, wouldn't it?
